Similarly, it was almost a year ago we first brought up the issue of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PTSD of medical personnel\u003C\u002Fa> due to the virus. We did not expect the two to intertwine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At one point over the past twelve months, we all noticed an extreme level of tiredness after a full workday spent in front of a computer. But it wasn’t tiredness: it was \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthline.com\u002Fhealth\u002Ffatigue#causes\" target=\"_blank\">fatigue\u003C\u002Fa>. While tiredness can be easily cured with rest and sleep, fatigue is a whole different issue. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC5420158\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">It may lead\u003C\u002Fa> to chronic diseases, burnout and ill mental and physical health, and its cure requires way more than just sleeping.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now imagine that you stare at a screen all day and your task isn’t yet another excel sheet, email or document, but to cure another human being. And although you experience the same kind of tiredness and fatigue, you can’t give in to it, as the person on the other end of the screen is counting on you as your doctor. That’s troubling.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Telemedicine fatigue\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As we wrote in our \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article on telemedicine\u003C\u002Fa>, we stated that the pandemic brought telemedicine into a new light. As medical professionals need to stay healthy and disease-free, the need for remote technologies skyrocketed. Both the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fcoronavirus\u002F2019-ncov\u002Fphp\u002Fpreparing-communities.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapps.who.int\u002Firis\u002Fbitstream\u002Fhandle\u002F10665\u002F331215\u002FWHO-2019-nCov-IPCPPE_use-2020.1-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHO\u003C\u002Fa> are advocating for telemedicine to monitor patients and reduce risks of them spreading the virus by travelling to hospitals. However, they don’t advise&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FBerci\u002Fstatus\u002F1374768095261233158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we asked followers\u003C\u002Fa> on Twitter about how they deal with zoom fatigue, many responded they either turn their camera off, or start wandering around in the room to avoid mental distress. But doctors can’t just walk out of situations like that, neither can they switch their online schedule onto their phone. They need to be there for the patients, even if they have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjamainternalmedicine\u002Ffullarticle\u002F1351351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stressors\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjamainternalmedicine\u002Ffullarticle\u002F1351351\"> to cope\u003C\u002Fa> with. Medical professionals’ burnout was an issue long before the pandemic. In fact, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.carecloud.com\u002Fcontinuum\u002Fpreventing-medical-burnout\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">career fatigue\u003C\u002Fa> is “\u003Cem>more common among doctors than any other U.S. worker.\u003C\u002Fem>” COVID-19 and the rise of telemedicine only made these issues worse.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The shift from analogue to digital\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>Adjusting to a completely different workflow is impossibly challenging, especially for health professionals who have been conducting analogue care for most of their career\u003C\u002Fem>” – wrote Bryan Vartabedian in his article on zoom fatigue \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002F33charts.com\u002Ftelemedicine-fatigue\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for his site\u003C\u002Fa>. This being stated, doctors have made the shift \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.patreon.com\u002Fposts\u002Fovernight-change-39169190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">practically overnight\u003C\u002Fa>; and filled their duties towards their patients almost seamlessly.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The American Psychological Association (\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.apaservices.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">APA\u003C\u002Fa>) has a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.apa.org\u002Ftopics\u002Fcovid-19\u002Findex#telementalhealth\" target=\"_blank\">long list of articles\u003C\u002Fa> related to telehealth solutions, primarily for psychologists, however, much of their takeaways can be used on other medical fields. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bestcounselingdegrees.net\u002Fresources\u002Fcombating-zoom-fatigue-for-online-counselors\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Other\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bestcounselingdegrees.net\u002Fresources\u002Fcombating-zoom-fatigue-for-online-counselors\u002F\"> sources\u003C\u002Fa> also noted a few steps medical professionals could do to avoid or ease zoom fatigue.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>During my usual daily practice, I meet patients either personally or online, up to their preference\u003C\u002Fem>” – explained Edit Katona, MD, Psy.D. her general business under “normal” circumstances. “\u003Cem>Regarding the online therapy session, I am in contact mainly with one person at the same time. So due to the individual and intermittent online sessions, I would not complain about zoom fatigue.\u003C\u002Fem>” However, online sessions can be more burdensome simply because of the two-dimensionality of the channel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>Well, online is more stressful on the one hand because you are much more focused mentally, more alert, clear also in pronunciation, straightforward, even louder maybe. Meanwhile, you need to solve the daily technical problems or crisis as well…\u003C\u002Fem>”– mentions Dr Katona. But she also sees the upside of the technology. “\u003Cem>On the other hand (medical) treatment carried on via internet became an extraordinary opportunity in the last few years, and stress factors caused by travelling, being late for an outer reason, physical disabilities, distance etc. are eliminated thanks to the online setting.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Help yourself\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a psychiatrist, Dr Katona knowingly does many things to protect herself from zoom fatigue. She had video sessions prior to COVID-19, consulting patients from all over the world. In that sense the pandemic didn’t change much – except that her sessions are conducted now online. “\u003Cem>I consciously organise my daily schedule to mix video and personal sessions. Preparing for online therapy, I make a fine cup of tea, or put at least 1-2 glasses of water on my desk.\u003C\u002Fem>” As for the technology, she mentions “\u003Cem>I prefer the laptop over the phone – in larger size we can better sense each other’s mimic and eye contact. Also, we can write in the chatbox or exchange files, and sometimes look into the „papers” not only into each other’s eyes.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ergonomy is another issue. “\u003Cem>Ergonomic issues are really to be arranged. After some weeks of regular video sessions, I started to suffer from neck pain. First, I changed my seat, then I was really happy getting a laptop stand with adjustable height. Now I see my client at eye level, in a comfortable distance, a bit more relaxed” – \u003C\u002Fem>Dr Katona explained. To close down the meetings she also uses the upside of the technology. “\u003Cem>After the session, we can leave short written messages with some kind words and point to the next meeting – replacing the live handshake and smile.”\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In fact, Dr Edit Katona is doing exactly the steps other \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.apa.org\u002Fmembers\u002Fcontent\u002Fzoom-fatigue\" target=\"_blank\">experts name crucial\u003C\u002Fa> for the well-being of the medical professional. She 1) manages her workflow consciously, 2) prepares clients for the sessions 3) creates an ergonomic workspace for herself and 4) practices self-care.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bestcounselingdegrees.net\u002Fresources\u002Fcombating-zoom-fatigue-for-online-counselors\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">In this article\u003C\u002Fa>, authors include a few other hints for online counsellors to make video meetings more bearable. They recommend online counsellors\u002Fpractitioners to:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Take breaks between sessions\u003C\u002Fstrong> – get up, take your eyes off the screen, drink a glass of water, walk around and stretch\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Take care of yourself \u003C\u002Fstrong>– offering support all day long is as exhausting as screentime. Make sure you have someone to pour your heart out to.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Time management \u003C\u002Fstrong>– make sure you incorporate eating, stretching, or even a short walk between your sessions. Also, be aware of the time spent on the meeting and cut it short when that time is up.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Be conscious not to be conscious\u003C\u002Fstrong> – staring at your own self is very distracting and makes us really self-conscious. Help yourself by hiding your screen from your own eyes, or minimise the zoom window. Or use the “hide self-view” button where available.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Ergonomy\u003C\u002Fstrong> –&nbsp;being comfortable with your setup, in your chair and make sure you sit or stand in a well-balanced position is really important. Get a laptop stand or a standing desk, sit on a fitness ball if you can – it’ll help you enormously.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Telehealth solutions (and videoconferencing) are likely to stay with us way beyond the pandemic.
