In the near future your phone will pack sensors that will allow you to gauge your vitals and more in order to monitor ongoing treatments and prevent other diseases from progressing.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a matter of fact, smartphones already have built-in sensors to analyse numerous parameters, without any add-ons. \u003Cem style=\"\">\u003Cb>Cameras aren’t just for Instagram stories but can \u003C\u002Fb>\u003C\u002Fem>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>analyse skin lesions; voice recording isn’t only to ask Siri about the weather but can also detect Alzheimer’s; and you’re likely already familiar with the built-in fitness app in your phone\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. However, there are still some hurdles to overcome before we enjoy a morning screening as depicted.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Here we analyse the parameters that our smartphones can currently measure, the challenges preventing them from turning into an effective Swiss knife of digital health and give a glimpse of what awaits in the near future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Every step counts\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Don’t forget to take your walk!” “It’s Day 3 of 5 of staying active!” These are notifications you’re probably familiar with thanks to built-in apps like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.google.com\u002Ffit\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Google Fit\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsupport.apple.com\u002Fen-us\u002FHT203037#:~:text=The%20Health%20app%20gathers%20health,automatically%20tracks%20your%20Activity%20data.\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Health\u003C\u002Fa> on your smartphone. By using your phone’s motion sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor), they track your steps, estimate the calories you burnt and remind you to keep active regularly. Other apps \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F4\u002F23\u002F21232488\u002Fblood-oxygen-apps-iphone-samsung-unreliable-fitbit-garmin-oximeter\" target=\"_blank\">claim to offer a similar function\u003C\u002Fa> through a phone’s camera. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However,&nbsp; the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cebm.net\u002Fcovid-19\u002Fquestion-should-smartphone-apps-be-used-as-oximeters-answer-no\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">recently contested\u003C\u002Fa> the accuracy of both Samsung’s sensors and apps. Researchers at the institution concluded that these methods raise “serious questions about the diagnostic accuracy”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is in part due to the inadequate wavelengths of light used in these sensors which can, however, be improved upon. Now that interest in this feature is gaining traction, we could see more accurate pulse oximetry sensors get integrated in our next smartphones.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Tap for temperature\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With a simple tap to the forehead, your future phone will record your temperature. Traditionally, this apparently simple parameter was a challenge to measure with a phone. That’s in part due to the design aspect and also because the smartphone itself is a considerable source of heat (ever thought about frying an egg on the back of your phone after watching a couple of YouTube videos?). With a tap to the forehead, the phone can establish the user’s temperature.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With phones making temperature measurements as easy as a tap, patients and physicians will monitor this parameter remotely, which, if elevated, can be indicative of the need to self-isolate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Making diagnosis of rare genetic conditions more common\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our upcoming high-tech Swiss army knife of digital health will not only be a boon for the general public but also for physicians. Yearly, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedaily.com\u002Freleases\u002F2019\u002F06\u002F190606133805.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some half a million children\u003C\u002Fa> are born with a rare hereditary disease worldwide. Their identification poses a challenge since doctors might not have encountered such rare cases in their career. However, early detection is crucial to provide adequate treatment and support.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With this in mind, scientists at the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in Lithuania \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.expresshealthcare.in\u002Fnews\u002Fsmartphone-app-may-help-diagnose-rare-genetic-disease\u002F411649\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">developed an app\u003C\u002Fa> to identify Huntington’s disease, a genetic condition leading to physical and cognitive impairments. Canadian firm WinterLight Labs developed an A.I. that analyses subtle cues from a patient’s voice. In these resource-limited settings, having access to accurate and vital parameters measurements will be a real game-changer. Their app has even been clinically tested in studies in Germany and The Netherlands, and as such, gives the app some decent credentials.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">The app is quite popular with 1.2 million downloads, and the company is growing steadily. Matthew Enevoldson, PR Manager at SkinVision, told The Medical Futurist that they are currently finalizing deals to expand their offering through large health insurance providers in Italy and France. To do so, \u003Cstrong>the app will prompt you to take a picture of the spot with your phone’s camera, and in about 30 seconds, it will give you a verdict of Low, Medium or High Risk. The app does the assessment via machine learning technology.\u003C\u002Fstrong> According to Enevoldson, the most recent data shows that their service has a sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 78%, well above that of a GP (sensitivity 60%), a dermatologist (sensitivity 75%) and even a specialist dermatologist (sensitivity 92%).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">However, SkinVision is not a diagnostic tool and should not be taken as the final verdict, as pointed out by the disclaimer at the end of every skin spot assessment. Nevertheless, the SkinVision team, which consists of actual dermatologists, further reviews the pictures of more suspicious spots and sends the user a ‘Doctor’s Advice’, advising the user to have that spot checked by a local dermatologist. However, we are unsure as to what warrants a ‘Doctor’s Advice’, except for High-Risk spots. In our tests, we received one for a Low-Risk mole but none (at the time of writing) for Medium-Risk spots.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u003Cstrong>To corroborate with the app’s assessment, we tested nevi which had already been checked by a dermatologist and knew the diagnosis of. Sure enough, the app’s algorithm was spot on with the diagnoses\u003C\u002Fstrong>, effectively identifying known low and medium risk spots.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">Once the skin lesion has been evaluated, the app provides the option to set a reminder to reassess the spot at a later time. This is particularly handy given the fact that nevi can change even if they are low-risk ones. The risk evaluation determines the user’s risk of skin cancer based on factors like familial history, number of moles they have or previous issues they might have experienced with their skin. The last feature, the UV Index, gives the local UV Index on a daily basis and offers advice like sunblock use and wearing protective clothing if the index is too high.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">Concerning the price, SkinVision is available to download for free on both Android and iOS devices but to use its services will cost you some money. For one, the picture-taking process can be problematic. For the app to take a picture, the skin spot has to be focused, centered and unobstructed\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The latter requirement can cause some issues with moles partly covered by hair. Such spots proved quasi-impossible to get the app to recognize and assess, even after trying to push all the hair aside as much as possible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">Nevertheless, SkinVision included a manual mode where pictures can be taken and assessed by a specialist in place of the app. However, sending manual photos for assessment come at an extra €14,99 for both ‘Single Smart Check’ and ‘SkinHealth Program’ options, although this service feels like it should have been included in the packages already. This aside, the manual mode only allows pictures taken on the spot to be evaluated. However, a feature that feels lacking in the current version of the app and which could be implemented in a future update is the ability to upload and assess photos of skin spots from the phone&#8217;s photo gallery. This way, pictures sent via emails and chat apps could also be assessed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">Additionally, \u003Cstrong>smaller nevi with a diameter of around 1 mm proved to be quite a challenge to get in focus and pictured by the app\u003C\u002Fstrong>. After numerous tries, we deemed that the app could not assess those smaller lesions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u003Cstrong>Moreover, for an assessment to be made, an internet connection is required. Its evaluation of spots match those done by actual dermatologists and being further supported by dermatologists with additional advice makes the app even more worthwhile. However, there are areas where it can still improve: saving offline assessments for a later online review or better assessing spots covered by hair.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-left\">If you have several moles that you’ve meant to get checked but have been postponing for ages, the SkinVision app is an adequate 21st-century tool to get it done.
