As for the most common arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation (AFib), it affects some 33.5 million individuals globally; with its prevalence \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fheart.bmj.com\u002Fcontent\u002F104\u002F24\u002F1989\" target=\"_blank\">expected to double by 2030\u003C\u002Fa>. These cardiovascular conditions need regular monitoring so as to prevent severe complications. For instance, hypertension can lead to heart and kidney failure, while AFib can lead to stroke.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For long, monitoring these conditions relied on measurements taken from bulky devices available only in medical facilities; a sphygmomanometer (or blood pressure monitor) for hypertension and an ECG monitor for arrhythmias. With the advent of digital health technologies, such medical-grade monitors became affordable, more portable and available outside of the confines of the hospital.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The credit-card sized \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Flets-put-the-best-to-the-test-our-kardiamobile6l-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">KardiaMobile6L\u003C\u002Fa> is FDA-cleared to indicate AFib and can be used virtually anywhere. As for the light and portable \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftalkative-blood-pressure-monitor-ihealth-clear-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">iHealth Clear\u003C\u002Fa> blood pressure monitor, it measures the systolic, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate in merely 30 seconds at home. However, even though they both monitor the user’s cardiovascular system, they are separate devices. They must thus be bought separately and also take up storage space. Withings is the company behind the ScanWatch smartwatch, which \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwithings-scanwatch-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">I fell in love with\u003C\u002Fa>. As for Viatom, they created the CheckMe Pro; or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffirst-medical-tricorder-viatom-checkme-pro-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the closest thing we have to \u003Cem>Star Trek\u003C\u002Fem>’s Tricorder\u003C\u002Fa>. Given how they delivered exciting products before, I was excited to see what their new devices had to offer and I will share my findings in this joint review.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Slipping on the Withings BPM Core and Viatom Armfit+\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When I first wore the Withings BPM Core, I noticed a strange button on the side of the device. As it turned out, it is a digital stethoscope which listens to your heart sounds when you push it against your chest to detect signs of valvular heart disease (VHD). The latter involves defective heart valves, which pose a risk to heart failure and may require surgical intervention.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It won&#8217;t replace a general stethoscope but supplements the BP and ECG measurements of the device to give deeper insights into one’s measurements. These readings are obtained as easily as slipping the cuff onto the arm and pressing a button to get a three-in-one cardiac status checkup.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[EN] BPM Core - Smart blood pressure monitor with ECG &amp; digital stethoscope\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FMuNwS2lmUIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Viatom Armfit+ lacks a digital stethoscope, but this gives it the advantage of being lighter and smaller. In contrast to the Withings BPM Core, readings for BP and ECG have to be taken separately with this monitor. Slip the cuff onto your arm to measure your BP; and hold the device between your two palms to get an ECG reading.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this sense, the Withings BPM Core is easier to use as it gives all readings at once. The Viatom Armfit+ requires extra steps to get BP and ECG readings respectively. But even then, both give accurate results extremely fast, in about a minute for the BPM Core (with blood pressure and ECG) and around the same time doing the two readings separately for the Armfit+; a pace that would amaze cardiologists.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Viatom BP2——Digital Blood Pressure Monitor with ECG\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002F-HSYbELb8mA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Gathering multiple cardiovascular readings from a single device\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When it comes to the readings themselves, both monitors deliver accurate measurements on the device itself. I compared the readings to each other and I compared both to those from the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftalkative-blood-pressure-monitor-ihealth-clear-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">iHealth Clear\u003C\u002Fa>, which I found to be accurate before. BP reading is as you would get from a traditional monitor with a systolic and a diastolic parameter. They indicate heart rate as you would expect; and as for ECG, the displays only say whether it’s normal or not.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Getting readings from the Viatom Armfit+&#8217;s screen is great. It is clear, easily readable and the information is concise. The Withings BPM Core’s screen is rather peculiar. It displays information in the form of dots and I found it a bit hard to read; although I’ll admit that it has a cool aesthetic. This allows you to further analyse or share the results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the readings are accurate, none of these devices have been approved by the FDA. Withings’ BPM Core \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsupport.withings.com\u002Fhc\u002Fen-us\u002Farticles\u002F360014212393-BPM-Core-Frequently-asked-questions-about-electrocardiogram-ECG-#:~:text=Yes%2C%20BPM%20Core%20has%20received,review%20to%20be%20FDA%20cleared\" target=\"_blank\">did receive CE clearance\u003C\u002Fa> for medical devices for its part. Withings also says that it developed the BPM Core in collaboration with cardiologists from two major hospitals in Paris; while Viatom makes no such note on its website for its Armfit+. Nevertheless, both companies have years of experience in manufacturing quality medical devices, some of which even bear the coveted FDA approval.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And while they output readings comparable to traditional BP monitors, they are both easier to wear and are thinner and lighter than traditional ones; with the Viatom Armfit+ being the thinner and the lighter one, as mentioned earlier. This aspect poses a barrier for those who are not that well-versed in dealing with technologies. I was happy to see that with the Armfit+, Viatom accommodated that demographic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As with every other Viatom device, the setup is super easy as there is none. You can use the device right away and every result will be on the device’s own screen. There are two options (ECG or BP) and two buttons, one for switching between options and one for on and off. It’s super easy to use and takes away the need for an app. However, the company also accommodated  those looking to share their medical data wirelessly. By pairing their device to the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fplay.google.com\u002Fstore\u002Fapps\u002Fdetails?id=com.viatom.vihealth\" target=\"_blank\">ViHealth app\u003C\u002Fa>, users can store and visualise the recorded readings. Since the app is not available in Europe at the moment, I was unfortunately unable to test it myself.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Withings BPM Core&#8217;s design is more like a traditional digital health device, with more reliance on the tech side. To begin using it, I had to connect it to my smartphone app (Healthmate) and also to my WiFi. This might be an issue for people not being good at dealing with technologies or simply if you don’t have a WiFi connection readily available. Thankfully, you don&#8217;t need the phone after that and you can take measurements by the touch of a single button.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fi\u002Fstatus\u002F1357026064757882880\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Similar concepts, different devices\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>All things considered, both the Withings BPM Core and the Viatom Armfit+ are very capable devices to allow anyone to monitor their cardiac health at home and subsequently share measurements with their physician. They are also well-rounded devices for a doctor of the 21st century to quickly and accurately measure patients’ BP and ECG, with readings easily stored in digital format.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The main difference is the price. The Withings BPM Core is more expensive \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.withings.com\u002Fit\u002Fen\u002Fbpm-core\" target=\"_blank\">at €250\u003C\u002Fa>, but it also has an additional digital stethoscope which the Viatom Armfit+ does not have. The latter itself \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.aliexpress.com\u002Fitem\u002F1005001993929154.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.618a4286jb7Wk1&amp;algo_pvid=09087328-999b-4750-9fd9-f23301f67dac&amp;algo_expid=09087328-999b-4750-9fd9-f23301f67dac-0&amp;btsid=0bb0623b16117447865973825e8595&amp;ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_\" target=\"_blank\">costs around €100\u003C\u002Fa>, which is rather affordable for a multi-sensor device.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Personally, I prefer the Withings BPM Core because of its digital stethoscope feature and sleek design. However, I’d recommend the Viatom device in a healthcare setting and for people who are not so good at dealing with technologies and smartphones. That means on average at least one in seven people have trouble seeing perfectly. That’s an insanely huge number – and The Medical Futurist team is not an exception here either. The majority has glasses or problems with their eyes for a long time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I only realized as an adult that I have problems with my vision, I’m short-sighted – so I have to live with a “telescope” on my head, but it proved to be great, especially while driving. I go to the ophthalmologist yearly to check whether my sight worsened. Rozina, our marketing guru, said she really loved to go to the ophthalmologist when she was a kid because she always had to read a board full of smileys and the entire exam seemed like a game for her. She was diagnosed with astigmatism and had her first glasses when she was three or four years old, but fortunately could put them down by the age of seven. Currently, she only wears the frames as her eyes are dry and glasses help in mitigating headaches.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nora, our editor-in-chief, has been wearing eyeglasses since she was 10 years old due to nearsightedness. At first, she only needed minus 0.5 diopters and the doctor said she didn’t have to wear it all day, but she loved the colorful frames so much that no one could have convinced her to put them down. Not like her classmates: when the fourth-graders had to go to the doctor for an eye check, many were really afraid of getting glasses. As the eyesight exam was a recurring event in school each year, some already knew what to do. Several start-ups offer point-of-care eye tests which enable to examine eye health at home and thus, people only need to go to the doctor when they have a symptom to cure. The EyeQue Insight portable device is one of these solutions, and The Medical Futurist team had the chance to try it. Briefly, we loved it. If you are interested in more details, read on.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The EyeQue and its technology\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company was founded in 2015 on a quest to develop optical smartphone attachments and mobile applications that let people test their own vision anywhere – without the need to go to an ophthalmologist and sit in front of room-sized ophthalmic refractometers. The Newark-based \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.eyeque.com\u002Fblog\u002Fwhy-eyeque-the-technology-behind-the-products\u002F\">EyeQue has an MIT patented technology\u003C\u002Fa> based on instruments and charts used in vision testing for years. They offer two products enabling low-cost and accessible eye tests for everyone. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.eyeque.com\u002Fpvt\">The Personal Vision Tracker\u003C\u002Fa> measures an individual’s refractive status, including near-or-farsightedness and astigmatism, while the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.eyeque.com\u002Finsight\">EyeQue Insight\u003C\u002Fa> determines visual acuity or the sharpness of vision.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As explained on their website, the Insight employs a binocular viewing device attached to a smartphone and presents a chart of randomly rotated “E” patterns or letters of different sizes. The viewer is asked to swipe the smartphone screen in the direction of the opening of the “E”. Just like the traditional vision testing, it measures each eye separately and then together, revealing the visual acuity on the smartphone screen upon completion. The instrument itself is not heavy, and if you have glasses like me, you will be able to use the gadget both with on and off your frames.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You can purchase the EyeQue for less than 100 dollars (within 30 days you get your money back if you are not satisfied), but it’s useful to know that the company is only shipping to the US, Canada, UK, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand at the moment. After you receive the product, you are told to create a personal profile on the company website and download the app. The instrument requires an active internet connection and subscription to the EyeQue service. Both the software and the hardware are user-friendly enough, thus they have built-in tutorials and practice tests to set up the gadget and the app appropriately. It was also straightforward how to use the on-board pupillary distance estimator to set the optics of the screener.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Afterward, you can choose kid or adult mode. For kids, the company created the test as a cartoon with a little blue figure telling them jokes and rewarding the child for taking the test. In my case, it was accurate. As it is useful to check your eyesight every now and then, the device’s best quality will appear after a while: it tracks vision changes, which is very useful to see whether your vision improves or deteriorates over time. In the latter case, you will have a clearer picture of the situation and discuss any further step with your ophthalmologist.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Besides, the instrument tests contrast sensitivity and color deficiency, basically color blindness. The former could determine if you have problems seeing variations of light and dark indicating conditions such as glaucoma or cataract. Fortunately, I have no major issues with contrast sensitivity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The testing process has two pitfalls which the company should definitely improve. It is not easy to strap the phone to the device, and some users even experienced that it attaches too strongly when it’s on. For me, the details were understandable and clear, but another physician, Dr. Alina Doe also confirmed my uncertainty about it. She believes the instrument tests refractive error well, but she noted it’s important to always remember that refractive error is just one indicator of eye health; these vision tests aren’t meant to replace visits to an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The retina and pressures need to be checked as well as other tests need to be done yearly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her Hungarian colleague, Dr. Zoltán Cserháti, said that the company’s Glossary of Terms in the report about the results comes in handy for anyone who wants to understand the jargon. Moreover, the charts and details could prove to be important for optometrists\u002Fophthalmologists, not just for the user itself. He also likes the fact that setting up the right pupillary distance and being able to switch between adult\u002Fchild modes make the gadget more personal.
