Yes, there most certainly will. Or, looking at it from another perspective, there might not be a second wave as the first one won’t end. In any case, which scenario is more probable depends on your country’s leadership and decisions and whether people will be compliant enough to go along with the restrictions. Because how governments are preparing for it over the next few weeks will be crucial in the fight against the pandemic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The search is still on for a vaccine and it certainly won’t be ready by the time experts say the second wave hits the stage. Technically, to talk about a second wave, the first wave needs to end. And in order to say one wave has ended, the virus would have to be brought under control and cases have to fall substantially. Remember “flatten the curve”? Well, the wave of a virus (be it the seasonal flu or COVID-19) means that the number of infections and deaths are up. And when the wave or the curve flattens, that means keeping the infections at a manageable level. Just like the waves of an ocean. A hundred years ago, the Spanish Flu also had a second wave. Where leadership and science went hand in hand, and the pandemic response was effective, this curve went down after the initial rise. And ‘effective’ here translates to human lives saved or lost, so it’s not empirical but an epic test of leadership. Typical examples are New Zealand, Iceland, South Korea or Germany. Others, like Brazil and the U.S., took a different path. Their struggle is still on. However, even the most successful countries need to face that their successful virus response gives only temporary relief. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Antibodies for long-time immunity\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Researchers are after the fact whether you can catch the coronavirus again after you’ve already had it – and, regrettably, this seems to be the case. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mayoclinic.org\u002Ftests-procedures\u002Fcovid-19-antibody-testing\u002Fabout\u002Fpac-20489696\">Antibodies\u003C\u002Fa> are proteins the immune system is producing responding to an infection. In some diseases, they can prevent reinfection. Unfortunately, it is still unclear if that stands for coronavirus. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medrxiv.org\u002Fcontent\u002F10.1101\u002F2020.07.09.20148429v1\">How long antibodies stay\u003C\u002Fa> in one’s blood is also unknown. A new study \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002Fjul\u002F12\u002Fimmunity-to-covid-19-could-be-lost-in-months-uk-study-suggests\">from King’s College London\u003C\u002Fa> inspired a swarm of headlines suggesting that immunity might vanish in only a few months; while other studies \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F22\u002Fhealth\u002Fcovid-antibodies-herd-immunity.html\">claim the opposite\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If there’s a chance to reinfection, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newscientist.com\u002Farticle\u002F2248216-why-hasnt-the-uk-seen-a-second-wave-of-the-coronavirus\u002F\">herd immunity\u003C\u002Fa> (when the majority of the society has had the virus and therefore radical protection measures become unnecessary) is out of the question. However, none of the studies are definitive, and there’s still a lot to be learned about this novel virus. There are already over two dozens of them \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002Finteractive\u002F2020\u002Fscience\u002Fcoronavirus-vaccine-tracker.html\">in human trials\u003C\u002Fa>. There are now promising results from British, Chinese, and Russian labs, where early tests show that the first vaccines induced antibody and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=kzu_Qz4ihMU\" target=\"_blank\">T-cell response\u003C\u002Fa> as well. It remains to be seen though, whether these vaccines are safe in the long term, and whether they could protect people for an extended period of time. Experts warn, however, that even with a vaccine produced, it’ll take a long time to have everyone vaccinated, starting with people with immune deficiencies, medical workers and the elderly. And then there are the resistant masses who refuse to get vaccinated. In the U.S. alone it is an estimated \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapnews.com\u002Fdacdc8bc428dd4df6511bfa259cfec44\" target=\"_blank\">60 million people\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The search for and the development of a new vaccine is extremely expensive, time-consuming and risky. It is likely that the spring and summer in the Northern hemisphere helped slow down the disease. Thus, logically, autumn is about to light the fires again. Added to that, the virus spreads much better in inside spaces. While out in the open it is more easily swept away with a breeze or is damaged by the sun. Reopening of schools will also contribute to the spread. And there are studies \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newscientist.com\u002Farticle\u002F2238494-how-long-does-coronavirus-stay-on-surfaces-and-can-they-infect-you\u002F\">that say\u003C\u002Fa> cooler, drier weather helps the virus linger on surfaces longer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The real risk is that we’re going to have two circulating respiratory pathogens at the same time,” explained Dr Robert Redfield, the head of the CDC \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5860066\u002Fcoronavirus-flu-cdc-director\u002F\">in an interview\u003C\u002Fa>. In last year’s flu season the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.hopkinsmedicine.org\u002Fhealth\u002Fconditions-and-diseases\u002Fcoronavirus\u002Ffirst-and-second-waves-of-coronavirus\">CDC reported\u003C\u002Fa> 39 million cases and 24,000 fatalities. If the coronavirus surges in the Autumn and the flu season hits hard, that’d put serious pressure on hospitals and healthcare personnel – again. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In our video back in April, we drew \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhen-and-how-will-covid-19-end\u002F\">three scenarios\u003C\u002Fa> on the possible outcomes of the virus. We see now that we are indeed living through the second: our battle with COVID-19 goes on over the majority of the year with travel restrictions, masks and social distancing. Currently, there’s a new surge in a number of countries: from Australia to India, Ukraine, Brazil or Israel. But now Europe’s main holiday time is approaching. Their numbers are about to rise as well, possibly leading to renewed lockdowns or restrictions. We already see it in a number of countries. In the U.S., numbers in the most affected states are rising again sharply, but it isn’t a second wave. As Vice President \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.whitehouse.gov\u002Farticles\u002Fvice-president-mike-pence-op-ed-isnt-coronavirus-second-wave\u002F\">Mike Pence writes\u003C\u002Fa> in an NYT op-ed: “there isn’t a coronavirus second wave.” That much is true. They are \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.facebook.com\u002FWorldNewsTonight\u002Fvideos\u002F3055909784497012\">knee-deep\u003C\u002Fa> in the first one.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>Another lockdown will come when the numbers reach a critical level again – like recently in South Korea or Israel. What these critical levels might be, depends mainly on individual governments and the capacity of their healthcare systems. But we can expect that the second coming will be better. A new surge can be mitigated by the better response. Now that governments, hospitals, doctors and even people know what they are facing, the next peak will definitely be easier than the first one. But today, most of us are wearing masks in public, social distancing and washing hands like we always should have. In those countries, where individuals oblige restrictions and are more conscious about practising good hygiene, people, in general, are going to be safer. Where a majority of people (or the government itself) did \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F25\u002Fworld\u002Famericas\u002Fbolsonaro-coronavirus.html\">not accept the mere existence\u003C\u002Fa> of the virus, the pandemic took its toll. The latter are enduring \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.huffpost.com\u002Fentry\u002Fthis-is-what-medical-workers-fighting-coronavirus-want-you-to-know_l_5e7e4d72c5b6256a7a2a01c5\" target=\"_blank\">extreme work conditions and sacrifices\u003C\u002Fa> in order to help the infected. Despite a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), they show up to work using DIY-solutions like ski goggles and bin bags with a high risk of being infected. Many are working overtime and witnessed patient after patient succumb to the disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>The anxiety of knowing you might be at risk when you’re doing your job can be very challenging for health care workers\u003C\u002Fem>,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F3\u002F5\u002F21166088\u002Fcoronavirus-covid-19-protection-doctors-nurses-health-workers-risk\">says Terri Rebmann\u003C\u002Fa>, a nurse researcher and director of the Institute for Biosecurity at Saint Louis University. “\u003Cem>It’s physically and mentally draining\u003C\u002Fem>.” This will lead to an inevitable spike in burnouts among the healthcare staff. Before the novel coronavirus, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fphysician-burnout\u002F\">some estimated\u003C\u002Fa> nearly half of the world’s 10 million physicians had symptoms of burnout. Now imagine after COVID-19…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More than burnouts, we will see frontliners with symptoms of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\">post-traumatic stress disorder\u003C\u002Fa> (PTSD). After this pandemic subsides, we will have to brace ourselves for the aftermath on medical professionals on the frontlines.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\">\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2021 UPDATE \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>This is one of the saddest and most depriving moments in the history of medicine. All of the above are still underway: medical professionals being emotionally drained, leaving the field, having mental health issues and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailynews.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F22\u002Fa-lot-of-us-are-going-to-have-ptsd-fatigue-burnout-exhaustion-plague-health-care-workers-during-covid-surge\" target=\"_blank\">burnout\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.concordmonitor.com\u002FCOVID-traumatizing-doctors-and-nurses-38381975\" target=\"_blank\">Institutions\u003C\u002Fa>, governments and even the direct management of medical facilities realised this way too late and are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fuk-wales-55770323\" target=\"_blank\">now rushing\u003C\u002Fa> to\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.africanews.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F25\u002Fcommunity-health-workers-must-be-better-supported-in-2021-the-year-of-the-healthcare-worker\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> provide support\u003C\u002Fa> to staff with direct counselling, online support or via applications – with mixed results.
