Will digital health tools help solve the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-widening-gap-in-access-to-healthcare-between-rich-and-poor-can-only-be-bridged-with-digital-health-solutions-if-they-are-used-wisely\u002F\">health inequity issues\u003C\u002Fa>? If you are not into long articles, here is the short answer: they might, but not right now and not obviously.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on the ever-growing amount of quality data on the subject, two trends are present. In some cases, in some countries, in some, traditionally underrepresented groups of developed societies, digital health tools are indeed closing some gaps by providing opportunities for leapfrogging. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.devex.com\u002Fnews\u002Fdrones-can-strengthen-delivery-of-health-supplies-a-new-study-finds-102894\">One great example\u003C\u002Fa> is how Ghana has overcome lacking infrastructure by using drones for various tasks, like delivering vaccines or blood. Another one is how women of colour in the US show a consistently \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Frockhealth.com\u002Finsights\u002Fstartup-innovation-for-underserved-groups-2021-digital-health-consumer-adoption-insights\u002F\">growing adoption rate\u003C\u002Fa> of digital health tools. Figures indicate that underrepresented and\u002For disadvantaged (poor, rural, minority, women, LGBTQ, etc) groups have significantly less access to all the cutting-edge solutions digital health offers. Thus the gap is not only not closing, but it’s rather further widening right now.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital health literacy? What is that?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The three definitions below are vital to understanding what digital health can and can’t do.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Health literacy\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The individuals’ ability to find, understand and use information and services to make informed health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Digital health literacy\u003C\u002Fstrong>. It is pretty much the same, but with the use of online tools and sources. Officially: “the ability to seek, find, understand, and appraise health information from electronic sources and apply the knowledge gained to addressing or solving a health problem”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Health equity\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Health equity is achieved when everyone can attain their full potential for health and well-being.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Why is that important? Well, for many reasons. If a person experiences worrying new symptoms, their (digital) health literacy skills will be a major factor in determining how they will proceed, and ultimately, when and what kind of treatment they seek. It will determine how efficiently they will find relevant information, and how well they can differentiate between reliable and sub-par sources suggesting different treatment options.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The same skills are required to understand the importance of health management, the use and benefits of wearables and the data they provide, how telehealth apps can support managing chronic conditions and so on. Of course, at the end of the day, it all boils down to structural inequities. If I’m lacking basic literacy and money, I will certainly not be a target customer for an intricate and expensive smartwatch offering complex health data collection and bespoke monthly subscriptions with access to first-tier specialists analysing my data.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I’m sure you get the point. A digital health tool is just a digital health tool. On its own, it does nothing. The theoretical possibility of advanced arrhythmia screening will only result in tangible health benefits if people will have access to the tool and have an understanding of its use and the benefits it can provide.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No arms, no chocolate\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As in the incredibly \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgoutaste.com\u002Ffrench-sense-of-humor-vs-american-humor-10-best-french-jokes-you-may-tell-your-friends\u002F\">absurd classic French joke\u003C\u002Fa>, digital health tools of today albeit having the potential to bring care to those without access &#8211; are in practice delivering the most for those who need it least. Urbanite, wealthy, well-educated patients, who can afford to buy the gadgets and the accompanying services, who can do their research and so on. This can be done by dedicated healthcare professionals, and centralised initiatives aiming to train members of communities who can mentor their peers.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Train the patients, train the trainers\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For healthcare professionals dedicated enough to care the first important factor is to identify patients with low digital health literacy. Experts suggest a list of useful questions to do that. Knowing if a patient is available via e-mail, if they have broadband internet access, if they know how to download an app and so on.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Patients who get “flagged” &#8211; not using e-mail is a sign that they might need more-than-average support &#8211; can best benefit from very specific, hands-on advice from their practitioners. Instead of suggesting they use this or that app, showing how to download and how to use the specific app will result in a much larger engagement and adherence.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Instead of mentioning the possibility to schedule visits online, walking them through the process will be a more efficient form of help. Instead of suggesting to read more about the benefits of their special diets, suggesting specific information sources they can trust will be significantly more helpful.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, we can’t allocate a full-time professional health mentor to everyone. If I have learned how to use the online scheduling system, I will be able to show it to my husband. If I know that there is an app for managing diabetes and know how to use it, I can explain it to my neighbour who has the condition. If I was educated about how smartwatches can be used to monitor&nbsp;cardiac parameters, I can teach my coworker with blood pressure problems why he might want to buy one and what to look for when using it.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are some interesting initiatives along these lines. NHS launched a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.digitalhealth.net\u002F2021\u002F10\u002Fresearch-reveals-long-way-to-go-to-close-digital-skills-gap\u002F\">program \u003C\u002Fa>to train digital health mentors, although this aims at healthcare professionals at the moment. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F33180917\u002F\">This study\u003C\u002Fa> shows real-world positive results of peer-to-peer mentoring for diabetes patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disruptive technologies have a tendency to widen gaps &#8211; before closing them\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is hard to predict the rate at which digital health becomes reality for everyone. But thinking back to what we know about former examples of how disruptive &#8211; not that anyone called them that then &#8211; technologies spread, we see a tendency that they tend to widen the gap at first but close them later.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>From electricity to washing machines, from polio vaccines to mobile phones &#8211; there was a period for each when the benefits were only available for a small group of people, but eventually they became the norm.\u003C\u002Fp>\n",false,{"rendered":22,"protected":20},"\u003Cp>Digital health currently helps those t most  who need it the least. As it’s an awfully difficult job, we collected examples where\ndigital health technology could help and in which areas should analog methods\nprevail. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The land where kindergarteners play with the texture\nof raspberry\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When was the last time you paid attention to the\ncrunching sounds while eating a raw carrot? Have you ever listened to it? What\nabout feeling the texture of dough or the scent of squashed blueberries? That’s\nexactly what kindergarteners in Finland are encouraged to do in the framework\nof a lifestyle program called SAPERE supported by the government of the\nScandinavian country. Instead of telling children ‘not to play with your food’,\nthey are encouraged to experiment with lemons, get their hands dirty in a bowl\nfull of flour, or pick apples from the kindergarten’s vegetable garden.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Apparently, it helps kids to get to know and eat more berries, vegetables, and fruits – all the food items that small children tend to disregard in favor of gums, candies, or dinosaur-shaped chocolate bars. As a consequence, they learn at a very early age that eating healthy stuff can also be fun not just obeying a parental command. \u003Cstrong>This sensory-based food education given to 3–5-year-old children in the kindergarten increases their willingness to choose vegetables, berries, and fruit, according to a study from the University of Eastern Finland. The research also states that positive and personal food-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help modify dietary preferences in a direction that is beneficial for health. They believe they can reduce their share of the alarming global obesity epidemic among young children, and prepare them for a healthier adulthood. Namely, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fdietphysicalactivity\u002Fchildhood\u002Fen\u002F\">the WHO estimated in 2016\u003C\u002Fa> that the number of overweight children under the age of five was over 41 million. Almost half of all overweight children under 5 lived in Asia and one quarter lived in Africa\u003C\u002Fstrong>. According to the CDC, data from 2015-2016 show that nearly 1 in 5 school age children and young people (6 to 19 years) in the United States is obese; and the percentage has almost tripled since the 1970s.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although child obesity has its roots in many problems: genetic factors, metabolism, specific eating and physical behavior, short sleep duration, negative childhood events, the impact of the environment, there are several ways how to improve those bleak numbers and prevent diseases like diabetes or cardiovascular conditions in an earlier age. The Finnish SAPERE method is one of them for how to teach a healthy attitude towards a wide range of food items and encourage children to have a diverse diet where sweets, pizza, and spaghetti are balanced out through vegetables. A similar app from Medtronic uses an animal avatar called \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.lenny-diabetes.com\u002F\">Lenny the Lion\u003C\u002Fa> to teach kids with diabetes about carb counting, while \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fayogo.com\u002Fblog\u002Fmonster-manor\u002F\">Ayogo deployed Monster Manor\u003C\u002Fa> for similar purposes. The Austrian-based mySugr developed the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fassets.mysugr.com\u002Fwebsite\u002Fmysugr.com-wordpress\u002Fuploads\u002F2016\u002F02\u002FmySugr-Press-Release-Junior-US-Launch_June-7-2013_Jun_7.pdf\">mySugr Junior\u003C\u002Fa> for children aged 6-10 to help them manage their condition with the help of the diabetes monster.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Donation\nto charities through step count and fighting inactivity with gamification\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, not only food and eating should be on the radar of health-conscious parents. Physical activity is key to the fight against obesity and a variety of childhood diseases. While the WHO recommends 60 minutes of regular, moderate to vigorous-intensity activity every week, a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fmmwr\u002Fpreview\u002Fmmwrhtml\u002Fss6104a1.htm\">youth risk survey across the United States from 2011 showed that\u003C\u002Fa> 13.8 percent of students had not participated in any kind of physical activity that increased their heart rate on at least 1 day during the 7 days before the survey. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gov.uk\u002Fgovernment\u002Fnews\u002Fnumber-of-children-getting-enough-physical-activity-drops-by-40\">Another survey from the UK even showed\u003C\u002Fa> that the number of children meeting the recommended amount of physical activity for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight drops by 40 percent as they move through primary school.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>From \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhealth-trackers-are-changing-the-experience-of-pregnancy\u002F\">sensors during pregnancy through baby monitors\u003C\u002Fa> until fitness trackers for kids, the scale of digital health devices for the family is widening. Several digital health techniques exist to help reduce these statistics and encourage kids to move more. For example, raising a health-focused and fit child is easier through gamification\u003C\u002Fstrong>. If you tell a kid to go out of the house and leave the video games because that’s healthy, you can be sure as a parent that it won’t happen. Kids are able to earn coins to redeem for agreed-upon rewards, while parents can monitor the kiddos’ steps and active minutes, assign chores and even hand out those virtual rewards. In the case of Zamzee, kids can cash in their “Pointz” even for donations to a charity, which is apparently a popular choice. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002F20087\u002Fhow-digital-health-tools-help-kids-form-better-habits\">HopeLab released an efficacy study which showed\u003C\u002Fa> Zamzee got kids to move 59 percent more than non-users over a six-month period.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Emotional, cognitive health and meditation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As in the case of adults, it is also not enough for children just to get the appropriate amount of food, enough sleep and physical activity for being healthy. Physical health greatly corresponds to mental as well as cognitive health, and unfortunately, statistics show that the youngest generation is plagued by mental health troubles. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fchildrensmentalhealth\u002Fdata.html\">CDC says\u003C\u002Fa> that only in the U.S. 9.4 percent of children have received an ADHD diagnosis, 7.4 percent have a behavior problem, while 7.1 percent fight anxiety and 3.2 percent have been diagnosed with depression.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Researchers also found that trends show an increase in mental health troubles among kids – and that might also have something to do with screen time as well as the use of the latest technologies in general\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The American Red Cross developed an \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.redcross.org\u002Fmonsterguard\">app called Monster Guard\u003C\u002Fa> focused on helping prepare children for emergencies\u003C\u002Fstrong>. It teaches kids through “Monster Guard Academy” how to prepare and stay safe during home fires, hurricanes, floods or other disasters, and they get points and medals for completing tasks. \u003Cstrong>The Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC) produced a very innovative and challenging project called “\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.emergency-live.com\u002Fit\u002Fnews\u002Ftraining-cpr-virtuale-ecco-come-diventare-eroi-nella-realta\u002F\">VR CPR\u003C\u002Fa>”.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The aim of this project is to create a full self-directed learning platform for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training in VR. No matter whether it is about babysitting, education or play-time, digital technologies have the capacity to completely reshape the experience of being a child and a parent\u003C\u002Fstrong>. New York-based Elemental Path, for example, develops Cognitoys, dinosaur-shaped toys kids can have a discussion with. It teaches them how to count, how to create stories together (!), remember colors and more. They can sing or play games and they also have amazingly bad word-wits.
