Get a drink, and the conversation starts flowing. Pour another glass of wine, and you start becoming more confident. By the next one, you’re on the dancefloor showing off moves from a Beyonce video. By that time you want to get home, however, you might lose your skill to reason clearly, and you will obviously get rid of your ability to drive. You might still think, you have the chance to get home safely, but you’d better not do that.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Statistics show that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-driverless-car-for-healthcare\">humans are not only bad at driving\u003C\u002Fa>, they are outright terrible at drunk driving. \u003C\u002Fstrong>The phenomenon is the cause of about 58 percent of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fniallmccarthy\u002F2016\u002F08\u002F11\u002Fthe-worst-countries-in-the-world-for-drunk-driving-infographic\u002F#423e2e3b2f5c\" target=\"_blank\">road fatalities in South Africa\u003C\u002Fa>. Every year, there are 25.1 car accident fatalities in the country per 100,000 people. Of all those deaths, six out of ten are due to alcohol consumption. But other countries are not much better either. In Canada, 34 percent of car fatalities relate to booze, but the US only lags behind by 3, while Australia by 4 percent. France comes in fifth on the global list with 29 percent, and Italians follow with 25 percent of fatal car crashes attributable to alcohol.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Many countries have a zero-tolerance policy with police units using breathalyzers to check drivers’ alcohol consumption on the roads, but companies are also offering consumer products to help drivers determine whether or not they should be driving\u003C\u002Fstrong>. However, these gadgets might also help nurses or doctors check incoming patients’ alcohol levels or parents could monitor whether their teenage kids really kept their words about not drinking. This sleek-looking $99 device is a pocket-sized device that connects to your smartphone and helps you monitor your BAC within seconds with professional-grade accuracy\u003C\u002Fstrong> thanks to its proprietary Xtend Fuel Cell Sensor technology. The recently available BACtrack Mobile Pro upgraded the original version to be even more accurate and to have an even shorter warmup time, but otherwise, the devices are pretty much the same. It’s a hard life to be a reviewer, isn’t it?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now, it is fairly easy to operate the device, actually. Even after a beer, which is already impressive. \u003Cstrong>After downloading the companion app and pairing the device with your smartphone via Bluetooth, you can fire a BAC test. The latter has a “warming up” period for its sensor which can occasionally take some time, but otherwise, it’s fast and furious\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What we really liked is that the\ncompany included a neat optional \u003Cstrong>guessing\ngame allowing you to take a guess at your BAC and then compare it with the\nactual result later\u003C\u002Fstrong>. It often happens that people underestimate the effect\nof alcohol on them or how much booze influences their behavior – so now, you can compare how much you actually know yourself\nand your body.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After the warm-up period, the app will tell you to take a deep breath and blow through the mouthpiece of the actual device. After capturing your breath sample with its mini internal solenoid breath pump, it will interpret your breath’s content and give you the result. It’s usually done in less than 30 seconds. We tried several times, and there was only one occasion where the app would hang on the interpretation step and never give out a result. With the included ZeroLine Technology, it also lets you know around when you can expect to be sober again, which proved to be, again, very accurate for us. That feature could also be a huge help for anyone estimating the time to get behind the wheel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During our tests, after waiting for 15 minutes post-alcohol consumption as the User Guide advises, the readings were more accurate, and closer to our guesses. However, if any moisture gets into the device while testing, the app will tell you so and ask you to repeat the test after rebooting it. It can also be used to raise awareness of one’s perceived BAC and their actual BAC. With its feature that lets you know when you can expect to be sober again, you can use it to make smarter decisions like how much more you would like to drink or if you need someone to take you back home. You can also keep track of your BAC from time to time and see when it gets back to zero so it is safe for you to retake the wheels. It is also a handy feature that the app links you to the Uber app – making it easier to find your way out of not being able to drive.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, bear in mind that the BACtrack mobile totally depends on a smartphone to operate. It could have included a small screen to display the user’s BAC after a test and thus turn it into a standalone device, but the BACtrack company offers other devices with such features. That is 1 in 13 children or roughly two in every classroom. That is approximately 1 in 133 people. However, more recent numbers suggest the number may be closer to 1 in 100. They established their venture whose name, Nima, means just or fair in Persian. It sounds just right for a food sensor. They started to market their Nima gluten sensor in 2016, which was named \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F4115398\u002Fbest-inventions-2015\u002Fitem\u002Fthe-sensor-that-sniffs-out-gluten\u002F\">one of Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions of 2015\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They promised that the portable device would be able to tell you from a small food sample within a couple of minutes, whether your food contains gluten. It is beneficial, as based on thousands of restaurant visits, the Nima community found that 1 out of 3 meals that are claimed to be gluten-free contains gluten actually. When we first heard about the possibility of testing food for gluten within minutes without having an MIT-sized laboratory in your kitchen, the whole The Medical Futurist team became incredibly excited, and we wanted to check it out immediately. And The Medical Futurist team loves all kinds of cakes. We had pistachio, chocolate, lemon-flavored pastries from various cake shops, and all were amazing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But, back to the Nima sensor. The neatly designed, black Nima-pyramid is a light, hand-held device. Charging is enabled through a micro USB cable, and it can last for days after one charging session.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The testing procedure was super-fast and very easy. We did it for gluten-free and gluten-containing products as well, just to see whether there is any difference in the duration of measurement and the process itself. In case of a gluten-free cracker, we put a pea-sized amount of food into a capsule, inserted it into the gadget and waited for four minutes to see the smiley meaning it is indeed gluten-free. Thumps up for the producers of the cracker!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the live session, we repeated the same with gluten-containing pastries, but you can also use any liquid or solid food. Users have to be careful not to overfill the capsule, and screw back on the cap until the green line disappears. You push the capsule into the Nima-pyramid and push the one button present on the device. It is that simple. After some louder or softer grunting sounds, the Nima will show the result. In the second case, it was a sign of a wheatear with the expression „gluten found”. The company uses anti-body based chemistry to test samples of food for the proteins found in gluten. The reference measure is the same as the FDA requirement for labeling gluten-free products: a maximum gluten content of 20 ppm. So with the Nima, you will be able to measure gluten-content equivalent to or more than 20 ppm.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are only certain types of proteins that the sensor can identify. Nima cannot detect gluten in fermented foods, such as soy-sauce or gluten-removed beers, as the fermentation process changes the gluten protein itself.
