What would you choose to improve first? Which are the most important steps towards people’s long-term well-being, and what are the cornerstones of development?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With governments struggling with handling the burdens COVID-19 had placed onto the healthcare systems, money flows down the drain countlessly. In the UK, the NHS has spent £10.8m to date on its contact tracing app – and yet, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.publictechnology.net\u002Farticles\u002Fnews\u002Fmps-slam-repeated-failures-nhs-digital-transformation\" target=\"_blank\">according to a report\u003C\u002Fa>, the NHSX couldn’t say if the app will be able to successfully trace infections. The UK was also on the focus of our \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-national-digital-health-transformations-fail\" target=\"_blank\">recent article\u003C\u002Fa> about the failure of digital health transformations, but many other countries follow close.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2021\u002F04\u002FScreen-Shot-2021-04-26-at-18.26.43-768x381.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34067\" srcset=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2021\u002F04\u002FScreen-Shot-2021-04-26-at-18.26.43-768x381.png 768w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2021\u002F04\u002FScreen-Shot-2021-04-26-at-18.26.43.png 1346w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \u002F>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: vizhub.healthdata.org\u002Ffgh\u002F\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Instead of measuring how much would be enough to spend, let’s take a turn and have a look at what changes would be needed for a country to meet digital challenges and truly be able to provide accessible and equitable healthcare. \u003Cstrong>We defined three levels of adoption based on the amount of money needed to implement the suggested changes.\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003Cstrong>These are:\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>\u003Cstrong>($) No additional funds required\u003Cbr>($$) Some investments are needed\u003Cbr>($$$) A massive amount of investment is necessary\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s have a look at these required changes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>$\u003C\u002Fstrong> –&nbsp;\u003Cstrong>OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: create feasible government policies&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such policies need to declare and establish the following steps in healthcare:\u003Cbr>Step 1: policies to empower patients\u003Cbr>Step 2: prepare healthcare professionals for step 1\u003Cbr>Step 3: ensure privacy throughout the steps 1 and 2.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>Implement patient design in government and medical associations\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The importance of involving patients in promoting health development cannot be stressed enough. The way Prof. Stefaan Bergé \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fpeek-into-the-future-of-hospitals\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">redesigned\u003C\u002Fa> his whole hospital department based on the book, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Famzn.to\u002F1w0O3sx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guide to the Future of Medicine\u003C\u002Fa>, covering patients’ suggestions, is extraordinary, but it should be the norm, not the exception.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The FDA \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Fadvisory-committees\u002Fcommittees-and-meeting-materials\u002Fpatient-engagement-advisory-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">involves patients\u003C\u002Fa> through its Patient Engagement Advisory Committee that advises “\u003Cem>on complex issues relating to medical devices, the regulation of devices, and their use by patients.\u003C\u002Fem>” And even the most prestigious medical magazines like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fabout-bmj\u002Fadvisory-panels\u002Fpatient-panel-members\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the BMJ\u003C\u002Fa> have their own patient advisory panels. In order to embrace this cultural transformation of digital health, mindsets need to change. And it needs to go from top to bottom. But still, physicians need to be the guiding lights in this change, and the sooner they change the way they think, the better. Therefore, medical education needs to ensure that students meet artificial intelligence, surgical robots or 3D printing in healthcare settings during their curriculum. More importantly, they don’t need to know the actual technology but need to have the skills to make their own assumptions in the future – possibly using technology as support. Protect patients’ data privacy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is no utopia: the small country of Estonia has already succeeded in protecting the privacy of its patients. The Estonian government did manage to secure people’s genetic and healthcare information with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-healthcare-in-estonia\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">blockchain technology\u003C\u002Fa>. This also helps the transparency of the data protection process as “\u003Cem>it allows authorities and even patients to get to know who looked up individual health data\u003C\u002Fem>” – as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-privacy-in-the-digital-health-era-the-medical-futurists-guide\u002F#\" target=\"_blank\">we wrote earlier\u003C\u002Fa>. To meet the goals described above and take the leap into real 21st-century healthcare, governments need to ensure they support people’s digital health literacy.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Step 1: elevate digital health literacy and ensure equal access to available sources\u003Cbr>Step 2: educate from the elementary level to medical school\u003Cbr>Step 3: create a hub for innovative startups\u003Cbr>Step 4: ensure data privacy\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>Digital health literacy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a first step, the administration should cultivate an ecosystem of health-oriented citizens by encouraging a public discussion on digital health. Once again, Estonia is a great example: their digital health initiative even \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.valitsus.ee\u002Fen\u002Fnews\u002Fgovernment-supports-public-health-development-plan-2020-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states\u003C\u002Fa> “\u003Cem>good health is our nation’s most important asset.\u003C\u002Fem>” Their tri-fold approach consists of 1. human-centred healthcare 2. health-supporting choices and 3. A health-supporting environment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u003Cstrong>Educating people from early on\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The U.K. also put its footsteps next to education. Its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.local.gov.uk\u002Fsites\u002Fdefault\u002Ffiles\u002Fdocuments\u002F15%204%20Working%20with%20schools%20to%20improve%20the%20health%20of%20school-aged%20children_%20%20%20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">school-based program\u003C\u002Fa> aims for an overarching target: “\u003Cem>if we influence children in the right way that can change the whole family’s approach to health.\u003C\u002Fem>” Including learning about a healthy lifestyle and health consciousness as early as from primary school has the possibility to make long-lasting, real lifestyle changes in children – as well as their families.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. \u003Cstrong>Equal access\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is also important not to forget about those who easily fall behind. The Australian Digital Health Agency \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.miragenews.com\u002Fgood-things-happening-to-support-digital-health-531756\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helps bridge\u003C\u002Fa> the digital divide “\u003Cem>that precludes many Australians accessing improved health services\u003C\u002Fem>.” Their initiative supports people’s understanding of the benefits of the digital health system with a mentor network supporting seniors, culturally and linguistically diverse people and people with disabilities. Their \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Flearning.goodthingsfoundation.org.au\u002Fsubjects\u002Fdigital-health?utm_source=miragenews&amp;utm_medium=miragenews&amp;utm_campaign=news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online resources\u003C\u002Fa> offer easily comprehensible education materials.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u003Cstrong>Medical education\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Investing in medical education also has widespread long-term effects. By adding advanced technologies to the medical curriculum, states can increase the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">digital literacy\u003C\u002Fa> of medical professionals. In order to be able to integrate technology into their medical practice, these students must meet new methods and digital innovations in their education. While having a high level of health understanding in the country, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fadrianbridgwater\u002F2020\u002F02\u002F21\u002Fhow-israel-became-a-technology-startup-nation\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Israel developed\u003C\u002Fa> a blossoming MedTech startup scene the government also pushes in its far-reaching agenda. Their startups are incredibly \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicalstartups.org\u002Fcountry\u002FIsrael\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">technology-focused\u003C\u002Fa> and the country is heavily investing in promoting them. They successfully created an innovation hub and developed “\u003Cem>a thriving innovation ecosystem by providing various tools to support industry R&amp;D\u003C\u002Fem>” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Finnovationisrael.org.il\u002Fen\u002Fcontentpage\u002Fstrategy-and-policy\" target=\"_blank\">as they explain\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>6. Use federated learning to protect privacy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This branch of artificial intelligence offers the chance for a safe way to handle patient data in hospitals and in medical trials. While its uses in healthcare are still relatively new, federated learning can open up a wider \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffederated-learning-can-protect-patients-data-in-hospitals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use of patient data\u003C\u002Fa> throughout countries and institutions with ensuring data privacy at the same time. This is a safe investment for any government that wants to step up its game in digital health solutions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>$$$ – OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: heavy investment into the future\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Yes, I know it’s naïve and futuristic, but there must be a third tier that looks farther into the future as we at The Medical Futurist \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Four-vision\" target=\"_blank\">envision\u003C\u002Fa>. We wrote about these concepts many times, and we recommend any government willing to take a deep dive in healthcare development to look into the possibilities of investing in these options. They might cost dearly, but these payments are clear investments into the lives of future generations.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Step 1: build seamlessly working, safe hospital environments\u003Cbr>Step 2: bring in remote diagnostic and care solutions like telemedicine or health sensors an integral part of healthcare\u003Cbr>Step 3: ensure safe and accessible own data handling for patients\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. Ensure \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcyberthreats-to-hospitals-2021\" target=\"_blank\">cybersecurity\u003C\u002Fa> over hospital systems\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In order to protect our medical facilities and the patients within, governments need to set adequate policies and guidelines in place to address both the social and technological components of this issue.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u003Cstrong>Make hospitals \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-ideal-hospital\" target=\"_blank\">paperless\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There is no place for paper and handwriting in a well-functioning hospital. Therefore hospitals need to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmv.com.br\u002Fen\u002Fblog\u002F5-steps-to-a-paperless-hospital\" target=\"_blank\">invest in\u003C\u002Fa> correct measurement of needs and processes, buy the necessary hardware and software, have a system for electronic health data, train personnel and standardise processes by getting a certification.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fpeek-into-the-future-of-hospitals\" target=\"_blank\">Connect hospitals\u003C\u002Fa> to the homes of patients\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Staying in bed is super boring and depressing. There also isn&#8217;t any therapeutic reason behind it in most cases –&nbsp;taking this a step further, in most cases people don&#8217;t even need to stay in a hospital – they can heal comfortably in their homes. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Four-vision\">The future is\u003C\u002Fa> when the patient becomes the point of care, and healthcare is invisible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u003Cstrong>Make telemedicine, health sensors, genome sequencing and A.I. top priorities in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F5-things-we-learnt-about-investments-in-digital-health-new-e-book\" target=\"_blank\">investments\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For a technology to be successful, it should integrate into the practical reality of healthcare. By helping those startups and companies that address the real-life needs of patients, governments can support a forward-looking healthcare. But empowered patients have their advantages: they aim to be the expert of their own condition because of social media and technology – and their own data. Thereby they are also more informed over their health.
