And at times when the world seems to collapse and all we knew or thought to know changes in an instant, we all need solid ground beneath our feet. We at The Medical Futurist believe this ground is science itself.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Indeed, 2020 has been a decisive year in many aspects. What matters to us the most is that it has created a massive gap between those who believe in science and those who don’t. It has also brought science fiction into our living room as the world we saw in movies or read in books has become our everyday reality – like telemedicine, sensors at home or at-home lab tests. Ultimately, this reality can become a good one – but it needs every single one of us to participate in turning healthcare digital.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What is digital health?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Digital health is nothing else but the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health\" target=\"_blank\">cultural transformation\u003C\u002Fa> healthcare has been going through in the 21st century. Today, our life depends on a massive amount of luck, and on the decisions of others. If you get into hospital, you are impuissant to circumstances, strangers and available hospital infrastructure. What we need to realize is that \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>healthcare has been going through a major transition because of digital health technologies\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> that provide data to both patients and medical professionals. There are now a zillion devices, applications and tests that can provide you with data on your condition, state and genetic background. Incorporating this data into the medical practice would be a quantum leap into that future we envision. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The reason why it hasn’t been implemented yet is purely human. It’s \u003Cstrong>the 3Rs of healthcare gatekeeping\u003C\u002Fstrong>: \u003Cstrong>Rejection\u003C\u002Fstrong> by individual medical professionals, good \u003Cstrong>Regulations\u003C\u002Fstrong> that are lacking, and the \u003Cstrong>Resistance\u003C\u002Fstrong> within the existing healthcare system, which is rooted in the belief that change can be stopped. We see the first steps in this direction through advanced \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F7-things-you-can-expect-from-a-i-in-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A.I. systems\u003C\u002Fa> in diagnosis or in medical-level \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsearch\u002F?term=at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at-home devices\u003C\u002Fa>. Healthcare shall also be \u003Cstrong>invisible \u003C\u002Fstrong>so patients can enjoy the attention of experts and technologies of the entire healthcare universe. Becoming proactive gives us the chance to live longer and healthier lives preventing diseases from developing. After all, doctors will be beneficiaries of the progress, not the victims. We believe that the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-role-of-medical-associations-in-the-digital-health-era\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">rol\u003C\u002Fa>e of medical associations is to enlighten the path that leads towards the future. In order to support this, we cooperate with medical associations that are already embracing the concept of digital health – like the American Medical Association (\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ama-assn.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">AMA\u003C\u002Fa>) or the Canadian Medical Association (\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cma.ca\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">CMA\u003C\u002Fa>). As a Private Professor at Semmelweis Medical School, Budapest, Dr Meskó has also strong ties with the Hungarian University, supporting their digital transformation. To bring medical professionals into this era, it is high time for the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fits-time-for-the-rise-of-e-physicians\" target=\"_blank\">rise of e-physicians\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Two.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>We also need to help \u003Cstrong>patients\u003C\u002Fstrong> understand these technologies and how these can be used for the benefit of their health or disease management. In our digital health utopia smartphones, health sensors, and wearables are in fact used by patients and also embraced by doctors. Once they have viable expectations about their health, patients will also be able to build equal partnerships with doctors. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To facilitate this part of the transition, we have published articles on \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">The Medical Futurist\u003C\u002Fa> site every week since 2016. They cover in-depth analyses, tests, reviews and explanatory pieces. We have a long line of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fuser\u002Fmedicalfuturist\" target=\"_blank\">youtube videos\u003C\u002Fa> that helps understand complex issues (and introduces many to the world of science fiction and futurism). By creating \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsearch\u002F?term=infographic\" target=\"_blank\">infographics\u003C\u002Fa> of various subjects we make this knowledge even more accessible. We use our \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.facebook.com\u002Fmedicalfuturist\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">social media channels\u003C\u002Fa> to help our followers orient themselves in the daily load of digital health news; and more recently we started live Q&As to directly answer grave amounts of questions in various themes. These aren’t necessarily the ones you’d most expect: like digital health pioneer of Africa \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-in-rwanda\" target=\"_blank\">Rwanda\u003C\u002Fa> where by necessity telemedicine and drone deliveries are as good as common and a central electronic health records system ensures data is collected about health activities. Or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fa-promising-hub-for-digital-health-kazakhstan\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Kazakh\u003C\u002Fa>stan, where the government provides all of its citizens with access to universal health coverage and empower patients to become the point of cares through digital health solutions. I was tasked to challenge health ministers and other policymakers about the impact of advanced technologies on patients’ lives and what regulations would facilitate these changes. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It was encouraging to see country leaders take a positive stance towards digital health and to hear about concrete examples as to how they are implementing technology to modify their local healthcare landscape. This experience served as an inspiration to write this article. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In it, we will highlight the most notable country initiatives pertaining to digital health around the world. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Privacy first\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When it comes to digitizing health records, one of the main concerns, and rightfully so, is the issue of privacy and security over one’s data. Those sensitive data are the reason hospitals are such an attractive target for ransomware \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2019\u002F10\u002F08\u002Fbusiness\u002Fransomware-attacks-trnd\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">which makes headlines\u003C\u002Fa> way more often than we would like them to. The country’s health ministry aims to bring electronic health records \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.politico.eu\u002Farticle\u002Fgermany-aims-to-become-eu-leader-in-digital-health-revamp\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">to all insured patients by 2021\u003C\u002Fa>, with a focus on data privacy and security as the government will also introduce a law regarding electronic health records protection.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdanish-digital-health-strategy\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Denmark is already developing\u003C\u002Fa> a model for patient data storage safeguarded by the government itself. For example, the Danish National Genome Center \u003Cstrong>stores only one copy of each patient’s genetic data, which cannot be downloaded, copied or removed from the genome database\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Estonia’s eHealth Authority for its part \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpwc.blogs.com\u002Fhealth_matters\u002F2017\u002F03\u002Festonia-prescribes-blockchain-for-healthcare-data-security.html\" target=\"_blank\">invested in blockchain technology in early 2017\u003C\u002Fa> to secure the data of the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-healthcare-in-estonia\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">country’s highly digitized healthcare system\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Patient access to medical records\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If it’s your data, why shouldn’t you have access to it? Your doctor might soon prescribe them to you alongside traditional medicines.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>England’s National Health Service (NHS) \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newscientist.com\u002Farticle\u002F2121164-nhs-to-start-prescribing-health-apps-that-help-manage-conditions\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">trialled a system in 2017\u003C\u002Fa> which prescribed apps to patients with chronic conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and gestational diabetes. Through a smart device, these apps can remotely transmit patient data to clinicians. This subsequently reduced patients’ visits to clinics by 25%, as shown by a two-year trial at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
