In fact, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.chessbase.com\u002Fpost\u002Fche-redux-how-many-people-play-che-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">one study\u003C\u002Fa> puts the number of chess players as about the same as there are regular Facebook members. The latter \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statista.com\u002Fstatistics\u002F264810\u002Fnumber-of-monthly-active-facebook-users-worldwide\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">only keeps on growing\u003C\u002Fa> and I don’t think that the number of chess enthusiasts will lag far behind. The board game has stood the test of time and will likely continue to do so given its ease to adopt, its technical elegance and the challenge to master that the chess experience brings along.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My Chess Journey started on November 8, 2018 in a bid to better understand the language of artificial intelligence. To keep up with the rapidly evolving landscape of machine and deep learning algorithms, I decided to learn the intricacies of chess gameplay so as to better understand what developers of such software go through while improving their product. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>… Wait&#8230; why chess again?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You might wonder why I didn’t try out a programming language instead, but \u003Cstrong>\u003Cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I came to the conclusion that the language of A.I. is in fact the language of anticipation\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Such algorithms function by mapping out every single step for scores of possible outcomes before a single step is even taken. They follow a decision tree that branches according to the next step that has already been computed by the A.I. Some are so good that they don’t even need a physical chess board to play and take part in what is known as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FBlindfold_chess#Modern_status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">blindfold chess\u003C\u002Fa>. Sure, a human chess player will never compute to the level of an A.I. but it’s as close as it gets. Learning the language of anticipation is much easier through learning games than anything else. Additionally, I went for chess, a more analytical and strategic game, than another one like Go where even intuition plays a huge role.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With this goal in mind, I sought out to find a trainer and came across&nbsp;\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fratings.fide.com\u002Fcard.phtml?event=724270\" target=\"_blank\">International Master Ármin Juhász\u003C\u002Fa> who took me in as a trainee. Starting in November, 2018, twice a week, two hours each session, we worked together to help me better understand the language of A.I. It can take \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fthechessworld.com\u002Farticles\u002Ftraining-techniques\u002Fhow-many-hours-per-day-to-work-on-chess-according-to-gm-shipov\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">anywhere from 2 to 6 hours\u003C\u002Fa> of regular practice a day to get to a professional level over the course of many years. Magnus Carlssen, current World Chess Champion, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FMagnus_Carlsen#Childhood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">participated in his first tournament\u003C\u002Fa> at the age of 8. In comparison, \u003Cstrong>it only took Google’s AlphaZero A.I. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2017\u002Fdec\u002F07\u002Falphazero-google-deepmind-ai-beats-champion-program-teaching-itself-to-play-four-hours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u003Cstrong>less than four hours\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> to master the game.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s all about hard work and perseverance. Case in point, to get to my current level, I&#8217;ve had to diligently complete over 33,000 tactic exercises on \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fchess.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">chess.com\u003C\u002Fa>, take part in tournaments and analyze games from Grandmasters. It’s an ongoing experience but early on, it helped me develop those 4 important soft skills:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>Humility&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When you sit in front of an 8 year-old who is beating you on the board unflinchingly, you learn to appreciate many things in life and to put your successes into context. It’s a truly humbling experience that will prove difficult to experience elsewhere.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u003Cstrong>A multi-dimensional strategic mindset\u003C\u002Fstrong>&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prior to learning chess, I had a strategic mindset when it came to tackling issues that I would describe as one-dimensional: here’s a problem, these might be obstacles and there lies the solution. What has changed is that this mindset has become\u003Cstrong> \u003C\u002Fstrong>2 dimensional\u003Cstrong>.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Now I only see decision trees along the way. I think about more potential outcomes than ever before whenever I have to tackle a challenge.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. \u003Cstrong>Patience&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This has never been a key personality trait of mine but chess helped me work on it. No matter how hard I worked on my chess, there were dozens of ups and downs. With time, I always broke through the downs and now I&#8217;m prepared for many more ups and downs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u003Cstrong>A new approach to problem solving\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Interestingly, I learnt to break down a problem that seems to be impossible to solve. By simply breaking it down to the tiniest element, I can still work with a challenge at hand. Now I understand more about what they do and how they do it, just like when learning a language you understand the news and what people say&nbsp; better as you practice. It also became evident to me that humans can’t best A.I.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FChess_rating_system\" target=\"_blank\">ELO score\u003C\u002Fa> (a chess rating system) on \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fchess.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">chess.com\u003C\u002Fa> improved from 700 (when I began) to a current score of around 1550 in 14 months. My trainer&#8217;s ELO score is around 2400. Magnus Carlssen, world No. 1, has a score of about 2880. Humans improve but algorithms improve exponentially.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Beating Leela, or an artificial intelligence, is not a matter of computation power or time, it&#8217;s simply impossible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To me, this did not mean that humanity is doomed. On the contrary, my appreciation and respect for algorithms, and their developers, only kept growing. The experience proved to me that our best bet is to embrace A.I. as a helpful tool, because upon reflection of my experience, I discovered the following aspects of A.I.:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>Incomparable cognitive prowess\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The more I understood about the tiniest details of an algorithm’s cognitive task, the more I understood why it&#8217;s impossible to beat it. I came to the conclusion that \u003Cstrong>A.I. will remain unbeatable in more tasks than one\u003C\u002Fstrong>, especially when it comes to cognitive processes, given its exponential computing ability, preparedness for myriad of potential outcomes while perpetually improving in the process, which are all unmatched by human abilities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u003Cstrong>Its thinking process\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By learning the language of anticipation, I could better understand what goes on in the “mind” of an A.I. Even if an algorithm cannot reason like a human being, I could try to think similarly, and it’s a mind-blowing realization! \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, as a chess player analyzing the board, you can determine and even feel which side has an advantage given the placement of the chess pieces, and AlphaZero processes it in a similar fashion. From now on we have no choice but to work with machines and make the best algorithms.” This is such a true statement and is possibly the most important lesson I learnt during my journey. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>If I constantly work on my mindset, skills and cognitive capacity, I might survive\u003C\u002Fstrong> and will certainly find my place in this new environment where A.I. becomes an integral part of our professional and personal lives. I was fascinated again about the scene in which the main character played by Joaquin Phoenix got his new, AI operating system and started working with it. I could not stop thinking about the ways I could use such an AI system in my life and how it actually could make me a better doctor.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I think empathy and great communication with patients can make a doctor better&nbsp;primarily, but as the amount of medical information out there is exponentially growing; as the time for dealing with patients and information is getting shorter, it is becoming humanly impossible to keep up with everything. However, suboptimal health care processes not only result in patients sometimes waiting for hours in front of doctors&#8217; offices but also medical professionals losing&nbsp;a lot of time every day waiting for something (a patient, a lab result, etc.). Our inboxes are full of unread messages and it is an everyday challenge not to drown into the ocean of new letters. I deal with about 200 e-mails every single day. I try to teach Gmail how to mark an email important or categorize them automatically into social media messages, newsletters, and personal emails, it&#8217;s still a challenge. In Her, the AI system prioritized all the 3000 unread emails in a second. The best we can do is to make those decisions as informed as possible. I can ask people whose opinion I value, but basically, that&#8217;s it. Unfortunately, you would search the world wide web in vain for certain answers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But AI-powered algorithms could help in the future. For example, in the Hungarian county of Kaposvár, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fonkonetwork-drastically-reduces-pre-treatment-waiting-time-oncology-patients\u002F\">the average time from the discovery of a cancerous disease until the actual medical consultation about the treatment plan was 54 days\u003C\u002Fa>. This alarming number has been drastically reduced to 21 days with the help of a special software and by optimizing patient management practices since November 2015. Imagine, though, what earthquake-like changes AI could bring into patient management if the usage of a simpler process management tool and follow-up system could halve the waiting time!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8) \u003Cstrong>Help me improve over time\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>People, even those who work on becoming better at their job, make the same mistakes over and over again. What if by discussing every challenging task or decision with an AI, I could improve the quality of my job. Just look at the following:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>97% of healthcare invoices in the Netherlands are digital containing data regarding the treatment, the doctor, and the hospital. These invoices could be easily retrieved. A local company, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zorgprismapubliek.nl\u002F\">Zorgprisma Publiek\u003C\u002Fa> analyzes the invoices and uses IBM Watson in the cloud to mine the data. At those times, I imagine that I have an AI by my side, which helps me find&nbsp;the most potential collaborators and invite them to work&nbsp;together with me for a better future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Clinical and research collaborations are crucial to find the best solutions for arising problems, however, more often than not, it is difficult to find the most relevant partners. There are already efforts to&nbsp;change this. For example, in the field of clinical trials,&nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftrialreach.com\u002F\">TrialReach\u003C\u002Fa> tries to bridge the gap between patients and researchers who are developing new drugs. If more patients have a chance to participate in trials, they might become more engaged with potential treatments or even be able to access new treatments before they become FDA approved and freely available.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10) \u003Cstrong>Do administrative work\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Quite an essential percentage of an average day of a doctor is spent with administrative stuff. An AI could learn how to do it properly and do it better than me by time. This is the area where AI could impact healthcare the most. Repetitive, monotonous tasks without the slightest need for creativity could and should be done by artificial intelligence. There are already great examples leaning towards this trend.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>IBM launched another algorithm called \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fresearcher.watson.ibm.com\u002Fresearcher\u002Fview_group.php?id=4384\">Medical Sieve\u003C\u002Fa>. It is an ambitious long-term exploratory project to build a next generation “cognitive assistant” with analytical, reasoning capabilities and a wide range of clinical knowledge.
