Modern advances and nanobots in medicine have rendered this term obsolete, as conditions previously classified as diseases are now either preventable or entirely curable at the molecular level.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Are we on the brink of a brave new world where diseases are just thrilling concepts from ancient history? After all, we are living through an \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-it-is-important-to-understand-multimodal-large-language-models-in-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI revolution\u003C\u002Fa> and nanotechnology captures our imaginations, it&#8217;s a natural expectation that these two fields will converge. The integration of AI and nanotechnology is seen as the next frontier, promising a future where AI-powered nanobots operate at a molecular level, transforming everything from healthcare to material science.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If we wonder what such AI-powered nanobots could do for us, we find a list of mindblowing possibilities.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diseases are unknown, death is an archaic term \u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to sci-fi novels and sensationalist reporters, we’ll soon be living in an age where diseases will be a thing of the past with nanobots continuously monitoring the body&#8217;s internal environment for early signs of diseases, such as cancer, infections, or autoimmune disorders. They could detect anomalies at the cellular level long before symptoms manifest, allowing for early intervention.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If our nanobots send an alert about cancerous cells, we’d have no reason to worry. Our doctor would quickly design the suiting drugs that nanobots administer directly to targeted areas, increasing treatment efficacy and minimizing side effects.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this new world, nanobots could be programmed to repair genetic mutations or defects in situ, cure genetic diseases, or enhance physical or cognitive abilities. We would be offered neural enhancement: nanobots could interface with the nervous system, enhancing cognitive functions like memory, learning, and processing speed.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aging would be obviously unknown: nanobots could repair or replace aged cells and tissues. They could also promote regeneration, healing injuries, and wounds at an accelerated rate. It leverages the unique properties of materials at the nanoscale (10^-9 meters), which often exhibit different physical, chemical, or biological characteristics compared to the same materials at a larger scale. This nanoscale is also similar to the scale of many biological mechanisms in the human body, allowing nanoparticles and nanomaterials to potentially cross natural barriers and interact with DNA or small proteins.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is an intriguing segment, with some very hands-on progress: according to the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fetp-nanomedicine.eu\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nanomedicine European Technology Platform\u003C\u002Fa>, there are over 80 marketed products, ranging from nano-delivery and pharmaceutical to medical imaging, diagnostics and biomaterials.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC6982820\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first nanotechnology-based targeted drug delivery systems\u003C\u002Fa> are already on the market, others are in clinical trials or, by far the largest part, are under development. Another highly attractive area of nanomedicine is diagnostics at nanoscale.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The aim is to identify a disease at the earliest possible stage. But if you ask me how close we are to this health utopia, I’ll be the bearer of bad news: \u003Cstrong>I think we are not close at all.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The concept of AI-equipped nanobots in our bloodstream remains far from realisation due to a variety of scientific, technological, and ethical challenges. Here are five reasons why we don&#8217;t have such technology today and why it&#8217;s unlikely to be developed within the &#8211; at least &#8211; next decade.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Technological Limitations:&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Creating nanobots equipped with AI that can safely and effectively operate in the human bloodstream involves immense technological challenges. This includes miniaturizing components to a nanoscale while ensuring they have enough power to operate and communicate. We currently only have existing examples on a microscale. As of now, we lack the necessary technology to build and power such tiny, sophisticated devices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Biocompatibility and Safety Issues:&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ensuring that nanobots are biocompatible and do not provoke an immune response is a significant challenge. There&#8217;s also the risk of unintended interactions with biological systems, such as clotting, inflammation, or accidental damage to cells or DNA, which could lead to serious health consequences.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. AI and Robotics Development Stage:&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Current AI and robotics technologies are not yet advanced enough to autonomously perform complex tasks inside the human body. AI systems, especially those that would need to operate at a nanoscale, require further development to handle the unpredictable and complex environment of the human body. Plus how would we provide energy for it?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Ethical and Regulatory Concerns:&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are numerous ethical and regulatory hurdles to overcome. The use of such technology raises questions about privacy (such as data collection from within the body), consent, and potential misuse. Additionally, regulatory bodies like the FDA would require extensive testing and trials to ensure safety and efficacy, which is a long and rigorous process. If an insulin pump can be hacked, imagine the level of issues around something in our bloodstream.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Cost and Accessibility:&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The development and deployment of AI-equipped nanobots would be extremely expensive. This cost barrier means that even if the technology were available, it might not be accessible to the majority of the population, leading to ethical concerns about equity and justice in healthcare. A blood test is still much more feasible than building nanobots.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given these challenges, it&#8217;s unlikely that we will see AI-equipped nanobots being used in medical applications within the next decade. It’s a timeless piece, all tiny details &#8211; the characters, the device design, the voiceovers &#8211; nuggets of gold.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Amazon Echo - SNL\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FYvT_gqs5ETk?start=5&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although features like continuous aFib screening (or blood pressure monitoring, alerts about changes in respiratory patterns, in gait, reminders on medication or drinking enough, and so on, and so on) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbeyond-the-hype-the-top-5-digital-health-devices-making-a-real-difference-in-my-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">would do more favor\u003C\u002Fa> for the seventy-somethings than for the twenty-somethings, we just seem to acknowledge the status quo.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So we have a handful of well-known factors hindering digital health adoption in the elderly generation:&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>Most devices specifically target younger customers &#8211; as opposed to just simply not specifically focusing on the elderly\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>This results in usability issues, which range from not seeing the screen to not understanding the aim of the device\u002Ftechnology\u002Fsolution\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Often, our elderly relatives might not even consider that they could (let alone should) use such technologies\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>And of course, there are hard barriers: these devices are often not cheap and the elderly are more likely to have a tight budget.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Still, there is a growing body of evidence showing that we don’t need to wait until today’s youngsters grow into their golden years to make technology work for seniors. If we could just make older people want these devices, it would profoundly alter the situation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When trying to determine \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-technology-make-an-impact-on-primary-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who will\u002Fcan use a digital health solution\u003C\u002Fa>, we won’t be able to set a universally valid age limit. Let’s take a look at Peter and Klara, the parents of my friend. They are well in their 70s and they both received an emergency wearable from the local municipality. The little device can be worn with a neck strap, on the wrist as a watch, or clipped to the belt and has an SOS button connected to a 24\u002F7 dispatcher service, it is waterproof and has a fall detection feature. Quite what you want for your elderly parents living on their own. While Klara is a happy user of the gadget and makes sure hers is always worn and properly charged, Peter’s device lives on his nightstand. “It&#8217;s impossible to always remember to wear it “ &#8211; he grumbles when asked.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are significantly linked to attitudes toward the use of digital health technologies &#8211; \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jmir.org\u002F2023\u002F1\u002Fe41915\" target=\"_blank\">this study found\u003C\u002Fa>. In other words: if you believe that you can use a device and trust in its usefulness, you’ll have a much higher chance of actually feeling comfortable using said device and finding it useful. And the positive attitude is linked to tech literacy: the more informed you are, the higher the chances you will be optimistic about the technology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Let’s find good selling points, like prolonged independence\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We can’t just say to our parents\u002Fgrandparents: \u003Cem>you need to want to use this smartwatch\u003C\u002Fem> and expect anything to happen &#8211; other than giving them a laugh. Or make them want to use generative AI by pointing out that they should do it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So we need to find selling points, and one of the best is prolonged independence. Grandma might not want to use digital health, but she surely wants to live in her own place independently as long as possible. Aging in place is considered the ability to live in one’s home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level” &#8211; this \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.managedhealthcareexecutive.com\u002Fview\u002Fmore-older-adults-plan-to-use-digital-health-technologies-as-they-age-in-place-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. News &amp; World Report survey\u003C\u002Fa> found.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This survey shows that aging is the primary reason for using assistive or health-related technologies. And the primary reason for not using them is that people feel they don’t need them \u003Cem>yet\u003C\u002Fem>. Only 16% of non-users cited financial reasons.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The things that matter most are that it’s easy to use (75%), easy to set up (50%), accessible using a mobile app (38%), and wireless (37%). An overwhelming majority (88%) said that assistive or health-related technologies have improved their quality of life, and they provide a sense of independence for more than half of the respondents.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The invisible population\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As the above-linked study discussed, a positive attitude is key and people with higher levels of digital health literacy have more positive attitudes. So what do we know about the digital health literacy of the elderly?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Well, not much. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC9389004\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">This scoping review\u003C\u002Fa> targeted these specific questions. They started their work with a whopping 1,924 articles to analyse the current state of digital health literacy of the elderly. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 47 articles were selected for the review. We discussed the individual drive in detail above, that is the attitude one has towards the technology. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Structural, environmental and socio-technical drivers are primarily only modifiable by organizational and high-level actors (e.g. policymakers, policymakers and market players). We don’t need to take old-age exclusion for granted, though. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As policies and market evolution influence social norms and values, which can either facilitate or hinder older adults&#8217; access to digital health services, structural divides can be addressed with the right policymaking attitude. Environmental drivers &#8211; like technological infrastructure &#8211; are evolving, and although they are not typically developed with the elderly in mind, the general improvement in infrastructure benefits all age groups.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Socio-technical limits arise from product design, which is basically determined by a business perspective.
