But is it just the expression we hear about more often, or is there a real trend? And by the way: what is a virtual ward? And what is it good for? \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is yet difficult to find one, generally accepted definition for the new phenomenon. The same phrase is used for a number of quite different solutions. For the sake of understanding, here is what we think about when we speak of virtual wards.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“A virtual ward is a solution that supports patients who would otherwise be in hospital to get the acute care, remote monitoring and treatment in their own homes, with the use of digital, remote monitoring health tools relaying real-time data to the hospital. The main difference between ‘full-grown’ virtual wards and the earlier existing solutions is the available data. Virtual wards provide the same data real-time as would be available if the patient was hospitalised.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is only possible through \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-and-technology\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">digital health technologies\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The arsenal tailored to the patients’ condition\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The digital health arsenal used is dependent on the patients’ condition, but generally measures health parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and blood oxygen level monitoring besides other, condition-specific metrics. The data is displayed in real-time in the hospital, and the support staff follows it as closely as if the patient was monitored in the intensive care unit. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is two-way communication. The patient has the option to immediately contact the health team, and real-time data allows healthcare providers to immediately intervene if measurements suggest deterioration in the patient’s condition.\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=1dxHT_QuDxM\">\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Virtual wards enabled by technology: hospital-level care for people in their own home\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002F1dxHT_QuDxM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this model, everything that physically needs a trained professional, like blood tests, wound dressings, intravenous therapy and so on, are carried out by a visiting nurse.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The idea of allowing some patients to heal in the comfort of their homes is nothing new. There is a vast amount of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjamanetworkopen\u002Ffullarticle\u002F2780783\" target=\"_blank\">data \u003C\u002Fa>proving that people with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F11686958\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">certain \u003C\u002Fa>symptoms \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbmjopen.bmj.com\u002Fcontent\u002F11\u002F1\u002Fe043285\" target=\"_blank\">heal better at home\u003C\u002Fa>. They are not at risk of hospital infections. Not under the strain of missing the family. And so on, the benefits are numerous.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The COVID-accelerated ideate \u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But, of course, there has been a vast amount of obstacles too to make this a reality. Some of the obstacles were objective – lack of equipment, tools, methods, workforce and workflow -, some psychological. It is an idea that fundamentally differs from the century-old mental picture of healthcare. Changes of that magnitude never come easy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It was a very tall mountain to climb, both for the healthcare professionals and the patients. It quickly became not just real, but in many cases, the best possible solution. Reluctance to change, fear, and uncertainty were all swept away in an instant – just because there was too much at stake, and more importantly, because this was the only possible action available. To use a pop cultural reference, this was a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen-academic.com\u002Fdic.nsf\u002Fenwiki\u002F837139\" target=\"_blank\">Seldon crisis\u003C\u002Fa> at its climax.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Many hospitals\u002Fhealthcare systems from the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.england.nhs.uk\u002Fvirtual-wards\u002F#:~:text=Virtual%20wards%20allow%20patients%20to,such%20as%20COVID%20virtual%20wards.\" target=\"_blank\">UK\u003C\u002Fa> to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fasia\u002Fcovid-19-virtual-ward-helped-singaporean-health-system-save-over-3500-bed-days\" target=\"_blank\">Singapore\u003C\u002Fa>, from the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.health.mil\u002FNews\u002FArticles\u002F2020\u002F10\u002F30\u002FVirtual-Ward-pilot-program-to-reduce-hospital-stay-time\" target=\"_blank\">US\u003C\u002Fa> to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.childrens.health.qld.gov.au\u002Fcovid-19-virtual-ward\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u003C\u002Fa> came to the same conclusion as their capacities were crumbling under the pressure of COVID waves. Some patients don’t actually need hospitalisation. They only need monitoring. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If they get better, all good. If they get worse, only then do they go to the hospital. According to the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealthinnovationnetwork.com\u002Fprojects\u002Frapid-evaluation-of-croydon-virtual-ward-model\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">figures of Health Innovation Network\u003C\u002Fa>, the COVID virtual ward model tested in Croydon was able to manage a cohort of up to 30 patients at one time using only a small team of clinicians.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frailty, acute respiratory infection, DVT, Afib, and many more\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although virtual wards debuted during the pandemic, the model is capable of effectively treating a much wider array of symptoms and conditions. In fact, that was proven in the past two years. In some cases, COVID patients were involved \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fget-used-to-it-remote-care-is-the-new-norm\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">in remote care\u003C\u002Fa>, while elsewhere the focus was different, rather on offering treatment to anyone else while the hospitals were more than full with COVID patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The United Kingdom’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgps.northcentrallondonccg.nhs.uk\u002Fservice\u002Fenhanced-virtual-ward-islington\" target=\"_blank\">NHS subpage\u003C\u002Fa> lists a number of examples:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>cellulitis (requiring IV antibiotics)\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>deep vein thrombosis (DVT)\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>mild-to-moderate PEs\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>chest infection (low CURB score 0-1)\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>urinary tract infection (UTI)\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>acute urinary retention, catheter-related problems\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is the first in the UK to create a remote \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.med-technews.com\u002Fnews\u002FDigital-in-Healthcare-News\u002Fvirtual-ward-for-afib-patients-launched-in-leicester\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">120 virtual-bed monitoring ward\u003C\u002Fa> for patients with atrial fibrillation. The connected solution equips patients with the “usual” starting kit and a telemedicine ECG device providing detailed assessment of their heart rhythm. Data is captured by an app, which allows secure transmission to the hospital, where it can be viewed by clinicians remotely, 24\u002F7.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The future of virtual wards\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Virtual hospitalisation could be an option for a range of cases.
