Although these algorithms have their limitations, feeding them with the right prompts can result in spectacular images. So much so that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2022\u002F09\u002F02\u002Ftechnology\u002Fai-artificial-intelligence-artists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this one\u003C\u002Fa> generated by Midjourney even won an art prize.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This presents so many fascinating questions and generates fierce debate. I, for one, don’t believe AI will replace artists, just as I don’t believe it will replace doctors. You can go on and experiment with these tools to find out for yourself how extremely hard it is to make the algorithm draw a picture like the one winning the blue ribbon for digital art. Finding these prompts is an art in itself which requires vision.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, this is actually not the topic we’re discussing here. My initial quest for this experiment was to test whether these generators are able to come up with viable-looking product designs for a variety of digital health products. Can we use them to stumble upon brand-new ideas or revolutionary new concepts?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In short, the answer is “not very likely” as of now, but they might offer some ideas worth exploring. And, as it is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fk3no.medium.com\u002Fai-image-generators-for-design-f4b427249dfe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained here\u003C\u002Fa> with some great examples, coming up with a sleek-looking sketch for a future product is only the first step of the design journey. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Good\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s start with the good examples. I tested 11 ideas and Midjourney came up with 5 design directions that I think are actually better in some aspects than what we have on the market today.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>A wearable health sensor patients can wear on their chest\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Looking at the output images, Midjourney imagined something along a 6 or 12-lead ECG line. The design is streamlined and you can imagine that some of these can be comfortable to wear even for a prolonged period. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Flh4.googleusercontent.com\u002FmL5dQveyED1oqXHxsM1dZUEq8bBmLUiWa3Ks0olzsjshco1jAfWt18MRmHJRzBrD2UBeSr6DD7lfc27vRy2FIb90wQWfqndyPsQmkTCXACqdWdrRuEQSvC-JL6jvt14n5Kjrx7BqLiH3Dfx9UEewJm0\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>A smartwatch that can measure blood glucose continuously\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I like these designs for several reasons – although they are not revolutionary as smartwatches. First of all, the algorithm came up with nice big displays, capable of showing a fair amount of info – which is an important point for such a device – and which is still not obvious looking at some of the new models debuting these days. Big displays, lots of info, futuristic look, you won’t be surprised for a second to see any of these on the shelves of stores. Of course, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-to-check-before-buying-a-smartwatch\u002F\">existing smartwatches\u003C\u002Fa> offer a wide range of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-last-monarch-of-the-fitbit-dynasty-the-fitbit-versa-2-review\u002F\">functionality\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwithings-scanwatch-review\u002F\">design\u003C\u002Fa> features, and the looks are only the tip of the iceberg. You definitely won’t measure anything regarding your sleep quality with a device sitting neatly on top of your hair, as do two of the designs. And sadly, none of these looks even remotely comfortable, which is a problem, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsweet-dreams-in-a-headband-the-philips-smartsleep-review\u002F\">trust me\u003C\u002Fa>. It is obvious that the algorithm didn’t have a clue about this one, there is a bed with a mattress for sure, but not much of a sensor. We see something in the second image, but it is eminently useless: it has the thickness of the mattress itself and almost the size as well. No way you can fit it under yourself and sleep on top of it. And the rest is even worse, and all those lights under the beds? I can’t fault them for not seeing the wearable blood pressure monitor in these designs. Here the algorithm entirely missed my point. To be fair with Midjourney, I also tested the exact same prompt with Open AI’s DALL-E2 and with Stable Diffusion and both significantly underperformed what we see here.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Flh6.googleusercontent.com\u002FIn5xDnstlCyGeUvkrQyCa0UQHyuCZ6wgo7qw2Mv_OWz7m9Oig59mrXB_cO1T4CcJivO4FWKm2iwI_i8m2lqycBynGi6LX66b7OaQVkyUppseRa2imIYRka6ET9-1qXym60P0Eu4dHjL2haX6O2Xni34\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>The medical tricorder device in practical medicine today\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Well, this is also not looking like a sleek 21st-century design of a multifunctional medical device. Although I like the classic Star Trek vibes, all of them are really old-school. These examples highlight how un-obvious it is to use them for generating something truly unique. Novel ideas may surface this way, but you need to dig a lot for them. And even more often, if the AI comes up with something radically different, it is just not practical.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I also think that some digital health products and\u002For devices have already found their “optimal” design. Wearable blood glucose sensors for example seem to have matured into a highly functional form – maybe this is the end of the design road for them. Other devices – like a wearable blood pressure monitor – are yet to get there. There are algorithms everywhere, we just don’t recognise them as artificial intelligence, although this is what they are. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, things will not stop at this point, and in the coming decades, we will have to form a deeper relationship with A.I. as it will become a prominent part of our daily lives on a more active level. In the healthcare setting, for example, we can be assured that A.I. will become a member of the care team – so we better figure out how to deal with it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A.I. will take over repetitive and data-based tasks and will transform your work\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is easy to determine how not to relate to this upcoming new era. Getting paralysed with desperation “A.I. will take my job and there is nothing I can do about it” (potentially with mental pictures of ending up under a bridge) is not the way. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ok, so how to relate? First, make it clear: yes, A.I. will take over many, many tasks from humans. And it will execute them faster, better, and cheaper. Tasks that are\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>data-based\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>repetitive\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>will be taken over by algorithms, whatever your line of work is. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This process will not be materially different from what we experienced with multiple technological revolutions centuries or decades ago. Computers took over a good number of tasks from humans – accountants don’t have to do all the calculus for a giant firm on a notebook with a pencil anymore, but computers did not take the work of accountants, they lent advanced computational skills to them. Computers also created new jobs, jobs we never knew in 1980 would exist in a few decades.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A similar shift is expected with algorithms and machines becoming better at certain tasks. A nurse might not need to do the blood draw in the future – machines will do it better -, or try and move heavy patients alone while changing their sheets. But this will not eliminate the need for nurses, it will transform what and how they do. They will probably have more time to empathically respond to patients, more time to talk about their cases and help them understand how to manage their conditions. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn to deal with A.I. now, in a non-commital way\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To prepare for the future, the best we can do is to familiarise ourselves with how artificial intelligence works – outside of our professional lives. This, again, will be a cultural transformation, and it is much better to learn it before it gets to the office. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Midjourney, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pcworld.com\u002Farticle\u002F820518\u002Fmidjourneys-ai-art-goes-live-for-everyone.html\">text-to-art image algorithm\u003C\u002Fa> is a good example. I tried to define the task much better, by breaking my initial mental picture into shorter and simpler sentences and stressing the missing details. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So it went: “\u003Cem>buzzing hospital emergency unit setting with many people in the picture. There are several patients in hospital beds. Lots of medical machines and devices. Several human doctors and human nurses. Also working with medical robots and A.I. Futuristic setting\u003C\u002Fem>.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Looks like this did not help a lot, while each of the four images incorporated some new details, none of them incorporated all of it. But all these queries helped me understand slightly better how this particular algorithm thinks and adjust my thinking to it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I will take a break from Midjourney for now and will get back in a little while, trying to figure out how to get to the result I want to see. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Is it good or useful? – you might ask. Well, yes and no. No in a way that we obviously can’t use Midjourney to generate images for publication – apart from this article. Also no in a way that after a number of tries – not all are documented above – I didn’t even get close to the picture I wanted to see.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, it was useful. It helped me think about my thinking process. It helped me think about the algorithm’s thinking. It was interesting to see how it gets to a visual answer and what kinds of answers it provides. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be curious and never stop playing with new technologies\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The above examples with Midjourney show how un-straightforward it is to use a text-to-art application – said to be the best at the moment – to make it generate the picture you want. However, it also shows that it can come up with many things, and some of these might surprise you. Get as comfortable with them as possible and form a “relationship”, as you will need it in a few years and decades. And never think you will be left behind, instead focus on how it will enhance what you are capable of doing. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although I was dead-set on pushing out a header image of the algorithm, my first attempts on a “\u003Cem>16:9 ratio image of a human doctor and an A.I. doctor shaking hands in the hospital\u003C\u002Fem>” ended up with quite disturbing results (and a square image format – note: you need to use aspect ratio or the –ar command).
