It’s like trying to piece together life on the planet in the\nage of the dinosaurs from fossils – almost impossible. So why do medical\nschools require students to learn the tricks of the trade from densely written\nbooks and PowerPoint presentations? Luckily, the advancement of technology\nbrought in another dimension: virtual reality. So, we looked around to what\nextent VR as a three-dimensional teaching tool can support medical education. Let’s\ndive into virtual laparoscopy, simulated empathy, and co. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Can simulated\nrealities trick your senses?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In April this year, NATO conducted \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwe-went-to-a-nato-military-medical-exercise-heres-what-we-learned\">the largest military-medical exercise in the history of the Alliance in Romania\u003C\u002Fa>. In one of the huge military containers called ‘virtual reality center’, paramedics sat in front of screens simulating building collapses, mass casualties, and environmental disasters, such as earthquakes, gas leakage, or radiation. The task was to coordinate their moves to see how they communicate with various units, soldiers, firefighters, first responders in difficult situations and how they make decisions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While soldiers and by-standing journalists casually chatted about local food or which location to visit next, loud screams and clouds of dust indicated on the screen that a building had just collapsed due to a strong earthquake – and tons of people need help. \u003Cstrong>Although paramedics were visibly focused on the task, and completed what they were supposed to do, they were in a safe environment without the adrenalin rush and\u002For paralyzing fear that comes with dangerous disaster situations. Perhaps, in some years, we will rather be worried about VR mimicking reality to such an extent that soldiers or doctors could not even distinguish that from reality. Perhaps, developers may decide in the future that just as with creating \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-are-we-afraid-of-androids-but-love-humanoid-robots\">robots that do not mimic human physiology on purpose\u003C\u002Fa>, they will create ‘imperfect’ immersive environments so that users will know and feel that they are dealing with a ‘training set’. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the problems around the distinction of simulation and reality might become louder with the perfection of technology, the rapid spread of virtual reality training around various professions shows that it fills a yawning void in educational practices. When you are studying anatomy from a 500-page-long book with black-and-white pictures and 10 pt font size, no one can seriously expect you to understand and learn it efficiently. How are you supposed to imagine the brain if you have never seen one? Or, if you feel sick in the dissection practice and cannot even look at the dead body in front of you? \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These are the exact situations where VR offers a viable solution. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.anatomage.com\u002Ftable\u002F\">Anatomage Table\u003C\u002Fa> is the world’s first virtual dissection surface perfect for teaching anatomy easily and spectacularly. The HoloLens mixed reality device is also a great tool for studying the human body, for example, through the use of the HoloHuman app. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Some universities have already introduced or are in the process of implementing such new technologies. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fconsultqd.clevelandclinic.org\u002Fnew-health-education-campus-offers-immersive-medical-training\u002F\">In collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic, Case Western University opened its new Health Education Campus\u003C\u002Fa>, which is completely cadaver-free. Students from CWRU’s dental, medical and nursing schools will learn anatomy in realistic and transferable ways, through virtual and\u002For mixed reality devices. Using the HoloLens and CWRU-developed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=h4M6BTYRlKQ&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">curriculum\u003C\u002Fa>, medical students will learn anatomy by viewing 3D holograms of the entire body. They will be able to look inside organs from any angle and investigate how different diseases and injuries affect different body parts\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In Denmark, the medical community and regulators believe in the power of this new technology so much that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsurgicalscience.com\u002F2015\u002F03\u002F23\u002Fdenmark-introduces-worlds-first-mandatory-simulation-based-training-for-all-physicians\u002F\">they even introduced a new policy in the Capital Region that requires physicians in all specialties to complete a compulsory simulation-based training program\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong> – prior to progressing to live patient training. Although medical students leaning over thick\nvolumes of anatomy might not share this view at earlier stages of their\nstudies, but one of the most challenging parts of being a doctor is mastering\nthe patient-doctor communication. Empathy is an indispensable tool here.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Delivering difficult news be it about a cancer diagnosis or the death of the patient to the family requires enormous strength of mind and empathy from the doctor, but also appropriate practice. That is where VR comes into the picture\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Researchers from \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedaily.com\u002Freleases\u002F2017\u002F04\u002F170427091749.htm\">Medical Cyberworlds Inc. and the University of Michigan conducted research with 421 medical students\u003C\u002Fa> about the use of VR in patient-doctor communication. They used the Mpathic-VR technology that allowed users to talk with emotive, computer-based virtual humans who can see, hear and react to them in real-time. The virtual humans used a full range of behaviors expected of two people talking together. Dozens of companies are developing virtual reality environments where the user can experience how it is to live with a disability or a certain condition\u003C\u002Fstrong>. For example, the interactive digital marketing company \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.viscira.com\u002F\">Viscira\u003C\u002Fa> has deployed programs that mimic the symptoms of \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fabc7news.com\u002Farchive\u002F9517304\u002F\">schizophrenia\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2011-05-27\u002Fas-doctors-limit-access-pharma-taps-viscira-for-simulations\">macular degeneration\u003C\u002Fa>. Excedrin’s \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.excedrin.com\u002Fmigraine-experience\u002F\">“The Migraine Experience”\u003C\u002Fa> marketing campaign for headache medicine simulates common migraine effects like light sensitivity, vision loss, and disorientation. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.upworthy.com\u002Fhow-do-you-make-a-young-doctor-really-understand-what-its-like-being-74-virtual-reality?c=huf1\">Embodied Labs created “We Are Alfred\u003C\u002Fa>” by using VR technology to show young medical students what aging means. This is especially important in healthcare, where sometimes it is easier to point to a specific area in the human body than to describe it\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Imagine an audience and the presenter wearing \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.oculus.com\u002F\">Oculus Rift\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.playstation.com\u002Fen-us\u002Fexplore\u002Fplaystation-vr\u002F\">Sony Morpheus\u003C\u002Fa> devices, and a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-technologies-shape-the-future-of-medical-conferences\">huge VR skull floating around on the stage\u003C\u002Fa>. All the devices are connected and if you don’t have your headwear, you only see an empty stage. They may use a similar platform as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthysimulation.com\u002F10699\u002Fpocket-nurse-distributes-new-vr-training-system-from-ves-imsh-2017-video-interview\u002F\">Virtual Education Systems’ VR training systems\u003C\u002Fa>; new nurses can train in hospital simulations with interactive patients, making critical decisions in real-time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another company, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsurgicalscience.com\u002F\">Surgical\nScience\u003C\u002Fa>, offers virtual\nsimulations for laparoscopic interventions and endoscopic procedures – as they believe\nthat laparoscopic skills come with repetition. Surgeons have several other\nsolutions as well to maintain and improve their skills. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.immersivetouch.com\u002F\">ImmersiveTouch\u003C\u002Fa>, for example, offers a VR imaging platform that\nallows surgeons to see, feel and experience minimally invasive surgical\npathways to improve surgical precision and patient outcomes. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fossovr.com\u002F\">Osso VR\u003C\u002Fa> is working in the field of orthopedic surgeries and\naims to improve the method of surgical training. A Cleveland-based company, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.surgicaltheater.net\u002F\">Surgical\nTheater\u003C\u002Fa> asked the\nquestion whether surgeons can be trained as fighter pilots able to pre-fly\ntheir missions – and they built an immersive environment just to provide the\nexact conditions for efficient surgical planning of operations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In some places, \u003Cstrong>VR became so critical in certain specialized medical training that no one can practice without mastering it.
