It is foundational to many diagnostic and clinical procedures. So the number of potential procedures available for visualization is huge. Using augmented reality in finding veins accurately for a blood draw was one of the very first practical uses of augmented reality (AR) technology. I expected the concept to bloom from the very first use case and clinical tests.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There is an issue down at the very base of medicine – 70 percent of medical decisions are based on the results of blood testing, yet, the majority of people carry a deeply rooted fear against needles and blood drawing altogether. So the technology has a real problem to solve and it was proven to be able to solve it, too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But why haven’t vein scanners become part of everyday medicine yet? Whether it&#8217;s the Terminator movies or our natural aversion to the unknown, I wouldn’t tell. But no matter how accurate a machine would be in finding our veins, we simply don’t allow it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I was also certain that vein scanner technology supports nurses having fewer problems and mistakes throughout the process. But if that is the case, how come we don’t get to see more of such devices in practice?! Fact is, vein visualisation technology is slowly reaching a standard of care, but then there are other issues.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Blood sampling, which is a challenge for nurses and patients alike, is a challenge. There is a variable in the process, even with the most practised hand: not seeing or finding the vein. A vein scanner is designed to support this, as it shows even the thinnest veins, along with running direction and details.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Responding to this challenge, the first vein scanners appeared around 2009. We asked electrical engineer Joe Zott, who participated in one of the very first projects developing handheld vein scanners. “\u003Cem>I started working with mixed reality in 2009 when I joined \u003C\u002Fem>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.accuvein.com\u002F\">\u003Cem>AccuVein\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cem> to develop their first product. AccuVein did not develop the first projection vein visualization device, but we made it handheld and useable. Having been the project and engineering manager for the development of a number of products and technologies, I had all the skills needed to manage a joint MR \u002F medical device product development. I was blown away: the costs of such a machine were horrible; it was so much that I thought not a single hospital director would give for a device to do a job a single nurse can do, too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>If you consider the use of vein visualization from the perspective of the financial cost of the procedure vs. the clinical benefits of using the technology then I think it is already affordable in many situations\u003C\u002Fem>” – Joe Zott added about the financial issues.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>At AccuVein we conducted \u003C\u002Fem>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.accuvein.com\u002Fwhy-accuvein\u002Fevidence\u002F\">\u003Cem>a number of studies\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cem> looking at the number of procedures our vein visualization devices were used. These applications included everything from clinical Monday through Friday settings where the device was used during normal hours to hospital emergency departments who used their devices 24 hours a day 7 days a week.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>With vein visualization devices having a 5 year lifetime and a price of around $4,000 the per-procedure cost will be on the order of $0.50 to $1 per patient use. Given the cost of gloves, catheters, etc. used in a vascular access procedure, I think vein visualization doesn’t increase the per-use price much and so \u003C\u002Fem>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>is already affordable\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cem>.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As for if it can become more affordable in the future, Joe Zott added: “\u003Cem>At AccuVein we conducted a number of studies looking at the number of procedures our vein visualization devices were used. With a lifespan of approximately 5 years this further nuance the price per patient. Making the technology more affordable than first thought.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>While I like to describe it as magic, there is nothing magical about the technology. As consumer MR becomes more mainstream this also helps bring down the production costs of medical MR. I would expect a price reduction in the market as occurred with similar common use medical devices &#8211; digital stethoscopes, digital thermometers, blood pressure instruments, pulse oximeters\u003C\u002Fem>” – finished Joe Zott.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We can only hope it will become more widely available. This technology will eventually shape the future of pharma, challenging our concept of the industry as it opens up a range of opportunities to bring the supply chain to the next level. What you see that the technology has still a long way to go to really hit pharmacies in reality – but it’s on the road to do so fast and we will all benefit from it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orange – moderate progress in sight\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" style=\"\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fvirtual-reality-help-women-get-through-childbirth-with-less-pain\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual reality in pain management\u003C\u002Fa> is one excellent example of a promising technology reaching its current limits. It is being widely used in forward-looking hospitals and clinics where monetary limits allow. This technology can do a lot and is already used extensively in pain management, however, with our current technological knowledge, we are able to create so much within this field. I am sure that we will see companies in this field opening up the horizons for all of us – but it won’t happen overnight.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red – not much progress in sight\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Only several years ago when the first companies arose in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-is-nutrigenomics-the-biggest-flop-in-digital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">nutrigenomics\u003C\u002Fa>, we had \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnutrigenomics\" target=\"_blank\">huge expectations\u003C\u002Fa> around the technology. It did fit in the hype around genomics, and knowing how your genes affect the way your body processes food created the anticipation that this would change everything we know about eating. It did not.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We at The Medical Futurist still think \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-global-nutrigenomics-landscape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the concept is great\u003C\u002Fa> and that one day it’ll be able to do what it originally promised. Nutrigenomics shows the way into the future, however, the concept was so hyped that the limelight was simply hijacked by companies yearning for attention but not having the proper science to back up their products. Interestingly, most of the companies around food technology have disappeared. I sincerely hope the second wave of them will be more successful.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The future of digital health technologies\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>These 50 technologies all have the harbinger to take us further on our road to digital transformation in healthcare. All of these have already contributed to changing our world in medicine for the better; and be it limitations of the current technical knowledge or space for expansion, or even \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" style=\"\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-national-digital-health-transformations-fail\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory hardships\u003C\u002Fa>,
