The question led to a discussion about the differences in research, funding and understanding of male-only and female-only health issues, and consequently, to this article.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is a well-known fact that some diseases or conditions dominantly affect one gender or the other. There are the trivial ones, like prostate cancer or ovarian, cervical, uterine cancers. But there is a long list of diseases and conditions that have a significantly higher prevalence among one of the sexes, like liver cancer or tuberculosis occurring more often in the male population, and autoimmune diseases or multiple sclerosis among the females.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does a symptom affecting 19% of men get five times more funding than a symptom affecting 90% of women?&nbsp;&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The interesting thing is, that figures suggest that although roughly half the population is female pretty much all across the globe, research on female-dominant diseases is underfunded, while male-dominant ones are overfunded.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is not something that is easily quantified, but \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.liebertpub.com\u002Fdoi\u002Fepub\u002F10.1089\u002Fjwh.2020.8682\" target=\"_blank\">this study tried to do this job\u003C\u002Fa>. It came to the conclusion that “the degree of funding disparity for the male-favored diseases (extent to which male-dominant diseases are overfunded and female-dominant diseases underfunded) is nearly twice as large as that for the female-favored diseases.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2022\u002F05\u002Fdifference-in-funding-male-and-female-health.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44583\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One easy to grasp example: premenstrual syndromes, affecting 90% of women, get one-fifth of the funding of erectile dysfunctions, affecting 19% of men. But the list goes on and on. Endometriosis, Alzheimer’s, Crohn disease, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune conditions are just a few of the diseases that are affecting women significantly more and receive only a moderate amount of research funding.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Females were not included in clinical trials before 1993, not even in mice\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some of the reasons for the “gender gap” we see in health-research and its funding are historical. And we don’t even need to go back centuries, only a few decades to find some interesting things.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The US Food And Drug Administration (FDA) excluded women “of child-bearing potential” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Fscience-research\u002Fwomens-health-research\u002Fregulations-guidance-and-reports-related-womens-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from all clinical trials between 1977 and 1993\u003C\u002Fa>. This means that all these years all clinical trials were carried out exclusively on men. And not only in humans, but also in mice.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The reasons were two folds. Regulators were worried about potential complications of foetal malformation, following the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmagazine-15536544\" target=\"_blank\">European withdrawal of the sedative Thalidomide\u003C\u002Fa>. This drug was used to suppress early pregnancy symptoms, and, as later was acknowledged, caused a vast number of birth deformities in the late 50’s. But this was not the only reason. Apparently, female hormonal cycles made things too complicated. The variability would mean more subjects were needed in clinical trials, thereby increasing costs. So including only male subjects in clinical trials was an economically justifiable solution. Or so it seemed.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No wonder, women have 50-75% more side effects from drugs\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The fact that women generally experience significantly more side effects from various drugs is not surprising after knowing how they were not included in clinical trials for quite a long time. Some 80% of all drugs removed from the US market \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gao.gov\u002Fproducts\u002Fgao-01-286r\" target=\"_blank\">between 1997 and 2000\u003C\u002Fa> were withdrawn because their side effects occurred mainly or exclusively in women. And the trend continued. Between 2004 and 2013, women suffered more than 2 million drug-related adverse events, compared with 1.3 million for men in the United States.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even in 2015, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Flifeandstyle\u002F2015\u002Fapr\u002F30\u002Ffda-clinical-trials-gender-gap-epa-nih-institute-of-medicine-cardiovascular-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only about a third of participants in clinical trials for new treatments for cardiovascular disease were female\u003C\u002Fa>, despite cardiovascular diseases being the number one cause of death in American women.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How about spending only a little more to have a ROI of 174,000 percent?\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffortune.com\u002F2022\u002F02\u002F11\u002Fwomen-health-medical-research-underfunding-equity-rand\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">As this article explains\u003C\u002Fa>, underfunding research about female health problems leaves a huge amount of money on the table. Sounds strange, right? After all, what we say is exactly that there should be more spending. But under-researched female health problems have incredible societal costs. Not only in the labour market, where conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases and similar ‘womanly’ problems take off years of the careers of millions. But also in other areas: paying for the extra years in elderly care or losing the capacities of females, who are the primary caretakers in most families.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rand.org\u002Fblog\u002F2022\u002F02\u002Funderfunding-of-research-in-womens-health-issues-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">Researchers can provide shocking numbers\u003C\u002Fa> to back their claims about why societies should focus more on female health.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, they examined what might happen if the budget for Alzheimer&#8217;s research into women specifically went from $288 million to $576 million. By doubling the NIH budget for research on coronary artery disease in women from its current $20 million, we could expect an ROI of 9,500 percent.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Studies focused on rheumatoid arthritis in women receive just $6 million a year. Doubling that would deliver an ROI of 174,000 percent and add $10.5 billion to our economy over the 30-year timespan” &#8211; the study says. Well, that is one hell of a ROI for sure.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So why don’t we spend on it if that is such a big business?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There is a huge amount of literature and debate about why exactly (and if at all) research targeting female health problems is underfunded in general. Some argue that the reason is quite simple: there are just too few female-targeted research initiatives, and instead of looking for discrimination, there should be more research projects submitted for funding.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Others see the situation a little more nuanced and believe that it is the result of many, overlapping structural problems, like the underrepresentation of women in science in general and especially in leading positions, the hard-to-pin but existing difference in the prestige of male and female researchers, gender inequities among decision-makers allocating funds and so on.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With all that said, these problems will surely not disappear by tomorrow, but we can expect that the development of healthcare and digital health tools will be part of the solution. Female health-related startups are definitely getting momentum &#8211; and funding &#8211; over the past decade, and the sheer amount of available health data coming from both genders will also contribute to a better understanding of the biological differences between how men and women react to drugs, treatments and ageing.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n",false,{"rendered":22,"protected":20},"\u003Cp>Under-researched female health problems have incredible societal costs. He says how at first he wanted power, then money, finally family and love. Just look at all those who turn to the cryopreservation of the human body – to be able to wake up healthily from death after centuries. Michigan professor, Robert Ettinger proposed \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2008\u002Ffeb\u002F14\u002Fresearch.cryonics\">cryonics\u003C\u002Fa> in a book called The Prospect of Immortality, which argued that death could, in fact, be a reversible process. Ettinger, who died in 2011, went on to found the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.cryonics.org\u002F\">Cryonics Institute\u003C\u002Fa> in Michigan where he, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fscience\u002F2016\u002Fnov\u002F18\u002Fthe-cryonics-dilemma-will-deep-frozen-bodies-be-fit-for-new-life\">his mother and his first and second wives all now reside in metal flasks kept at −196 °C\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are \u003Cstrong>many more who believe that instead of immortality, humanity has to look at longevity and the chances to keep people healthy and alive for as long as possible\u003C\u002Fstrong>. With the drastic increase in life expectancy in the last centuries, the idea of longevity seems to be as close as never before. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newyorker.com\u002Fmagazine\u002F2017\u002F04\u002F03\u002Fsilicon-valleys-quest-to-live-forever\">Silicon Valley clearly has a quest for that now\u003C\u002Fa>. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnam.edu\u002Finitiatives\u002Fgrand-challenge-healthy-longevity\u002F\">U.S. National Academy launched a Grand Challenge in Healthy Longevity\u003C\u002Fa>, which will award at least twenty-five million dollars for breakthroughs in the field. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pacitaproject.eu\u002F\">Parliaments and Civil Society in Technology Assessment (PACITA)\u003C\u002Fa> is a project of the European Union bringing together stakeholders of healthcare in hopes to design policy, gather technological solutions, and promote awareness of assisting an aging society.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Do you think it’s impossible to live beyond a hundred years healthily? He would be considered a Methuselah in ancient Greece or Rome, where the average life expectancy was 30 years. The same would go for Ted if he had fought in the Hundred Year’s War against the French or if he had sailed with Columbus for the New World on the Santa Maria. Before the 19\u003Csup>th\u003C\u002Fsup> century, people died much younger than today. Eternal love for your wife meant 10-20 years, maximum. However, \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theatlantic.com\u002Fmagazine\u002Farchive\u002F2014\u002F10\u002Fwhat-happens-when-we-all-live-to-100\u002F379338\u002F\">since 1840, life expectancy at birth has risen about three months per year\u003C\u002Fa>. Thus, every year a newborn lives three months longer than those born the previous year\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Sweden, which keeps excellent demographic records, documents female life expectancy at 45 years of age in 1840 and 83 today.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, there are huge differences between regions: if you are born in Morocco, you can expect a completely different life-span as in Canada. The two extremes are Sierra Leone and Japan: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FList_of_countries_by_life_expectancy\">life expectancy is 50.1 years in the former and 83.7 in the latter\u003C\u002Fa>. However, \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Fnews\u002Fscience\u002Fscience-news\u002F11562492\u002FMeet-the-doctor-who-is-convinced-he-will-live-to-150.html\">experts believe that\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> with recent breakthroughs in science and medicine coupled with lifestyle changes, this number could reach far beyond 100 years.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although it is not obvious that people want to live longer. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pewresearch.org\u002Ffact-tank\u002F2016\u002F09\u002F13\u002Famericans-are-wary-of-enhancements-that-could-enable-them-to-live-longer-and-stronger\u002F\">Pew Research Center surveyed thousands of Americans in 2013\u003C\u002Fa>. A third of them didn’t want to live past the age of 80, and 56 percent of adults said they would not want to live at least 120 years, which is considered the current upper limit of the human lifespan. Only a small minority of 8 percent wanted to live for more than a hundred years. What does it matter how old you are if you cannot use your body and brain to live a full life? Aging is generally associated with deteriorating health and decrepitude. That’s the primary reason why people wouldn’t want to live longer. Ideally, this should improve before life expectancy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When you think about it\u003Cstrong>, the life of men and women lengthened so quickly in only a few decades that society hasn’t been able to adjust\u003C\u002Fstrong>. We can see that when \u003Cstrong>looking at overstrained pension schemes, economic distribution problems – but also deeper-rooted social structures and social values.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Even the idea of marriage and other social bonds might be in crisis because these constructions are slower to change than our life expectancy. Why wouldn’t they be? For example, people were told to live a married life and be faithful as long as they shall live for centuries. But how shall we do that if in the 19\u003Csup>th\u003C\u002Fsup> century that was 30 years at best and now it might even mean 60?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How could we extend our lifespan beyond 100 years of age if the effects of an aging population already strain our societies\u003C\u002Fstrong>? If younger generations cannot sustain the social system to provide care for their elders as they are growing older and older, significant structural changes will be necessary. Transhumanist \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fzoltan_istvan\">Zoltan Istvan\u003C\u002Fa> agreed that if we live past 130 years, society will fundamentally change. Young, as well as older workers, will have to deal with the fact that people will retire increasingly later. Healthcare systems should prepare for the fact that health problems will quadruple in the coming years due to larger numbers of the elderly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.un.org\u002Fen\u002Fdevelopment\u002Fdesa\u002Fpopulation\u002Fpublications\u002Fpdf\u002Fageing\u002FWPA2015_Report.pdf\">two billion people will be over the age of 60 by 2050\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, \u003Cstrong>the ultimate aim should be to sustain the quality of life during those long ye\u003C\u002Fstrong>ars instead of spending it bedridden in hospitals or home cares. \u003Cstrong>Paying more attention to living a healthy life and the use of technologies could offer a helping hand\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although we have no idea where exponential technological development might take us in the next 50 or 100 years, \u003Cstrong>trends show amazing possibilities for enhancing the human body and brain for keeping them fit\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-worlds-most-famous-real-life-cyborgs\u002F\">Special brain implants could improve our memory\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-makes-you-a-superhero\u002F\">Exoskeletons could boost our strength\u003C\u002Fa>, and augment a whole range of our human capabilities. Older people could carry out heavy lifting tasks and other cumbersome assignments by increasing their physical abilities with these complex robotic structures. Scientists are experimenting with various brain implants that \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002F10-brain-implant-superpowers-2014-5\">might help restore hearing for the deaf and restore sight for some blind people\u003C\u002Fa>. And what if we could grow synthetic organs in laboratories to replace “worn-out” ones? \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.organovo.com\u002F\">Organovo\u003C\u002Fa> successfully bioprinted liver tissues already in 2014. The company suggests that within a decade, we will be able to print solid organs such as liver, heart, and kidney. The bioprinted liver tissue could \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002F3dprintingindustry.com\u002Fnews\u002Forganovo-3d-bioprinted-liver-tissue-make-fda-2019-101775\u002F\">make it to the FDA in 2019\u003C\u002Fa>. What if ectogenesis – growing babies outside the womb – would become reality alongside with the possibility for uploading individual minds to computers or the voluntary elimination of genders. There are already \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fnationalpost.com\u002Fhealth\u002Fartificial-wombs\">experiments for saving premature babies in artificial wombs\u003C\u002Fa>…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Technologies for the aging society \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While some of the above options are currently rather concepts in science-fiction movies, such as \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.vulture.com\u002F2016\u002F10\u002Fblack-mirror-recap-season-3-episode-4.html\">Black Mirror’s San Junipero episode\u003C\u002Fa>, new \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-greatest-technological-developments-for-the-elderly\u002F\">technologies are already available to help older adults live fuller and more independent lives\u003C\u002Fa> among their younger cohorts. \u003Cstrong>That’s exactly what digital solutions should do: not push them to society’s periphery but keep them connected to the center\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some health technologies help preserve physical fitness, such as RespondWell, which is using a Kinect sensor to help understand a person’s physical limitations and connect them with a therapist who can then create an individualized physical fitness plan. Some others help recover lost abilities: \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.tvears.com\u002F\">TV Ears\u003C\u002Fa> lets people with hearing loss listen to the television clearly without turning up the volume. The Wright Stuff offers a range of products that make dressing up easier for anyone who cannot use one of their hands. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.liftware.com\u002F\">Liftware stabilizing handle\u003C\u002Fa>, a smart utensil supports motion and enables the hand to shake 70 percent less making eating enjoyable again. There are many more similar innovations on the market and in the future, there will be even more digital solutions with the goal to sustain the quality of life for longer lifespans.
