A race to vaccinate the world. It was the news (or more likely, the miracle) we were eagerly waiting for: to have a functional vaccine against COVID-19 as soon as possible. And in less than a year since the WHO declared the state of pandemic, we have more than one such vaccine. Records \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.engadget.com\u002Fcovid-vaccine-research-and-development-150052906.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were broken in vaccine development rates\u003C\u002Fa>, we have the hope we were looking for and the unspoken prophecy was fulfilled.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now, several vaccines are approved in many countries and even by leading healthcare authorities; with millions of people already having been vaccinated. But this is not enough. We need billions to get their shot, or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhealth-51665497\" target=\"_blank\">around 60-70% of the global population\u003C\u002Fa>, to achieve herd immunity and stop the virus’ spread definitively. And that’s in the best case scenario, with a vaccine working perfectly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the actual scenario is far from perfect. To emerge victorious in the vaccine race, countries are prioritising economic gains and prestige over safety. For instance, Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fd41586-020-02386-2#:~:text=The%20Gamaleya%20vaccine%20has%20been,known%20about%20the%20experimental%20vaccine.\" target=\"_blank\"> underwent testing on only 76 volunteers\u003C\u002Fa> and skipped the critical Phase III trials. Other countries or companies might follow suit and push for their own poorly tested vaccines.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nonetheless, the hope that vaccines bring along is already here. They depict how a pandemic at the scale of COVID-19 would play out in a digital health utopia: one where the cultural transformation that we at The Medical Futurist envision, one we wouldn’t mind being the reality.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Truth is, the technologies required for such a utopia already exist but aren’t implemented on a large scale. This can be attributed to insufficient policies and incentives to support them. However, digital health showed to be an adequate solution to handle the threat of COVID-19 \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-digital-health-technology-can-help-manage-the-coronavirus-outbreak\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">right from the start\u003C\u002Fa>. So let’s investigate how the COVID-19 saga would take place in this coveted digital health utopia; a utopia which we might need to be able to better handle a subsequent public health crisis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>A.I. saw a pandemic coming\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What better aide to predict an upcoming disease outbreak than one that speaks the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-i-learnt-about-a-i-by-playing-1000-hours-of-chess-in-a-year\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">language of anticipation\u003C\u002Fa>? Rather than leading to Judgment Day as predicted in Terminator, artificial intelligence is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fibm-watson-is-the-stethoscope-of-the-21st-century\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">an indispensable tool\u003C\u002Fa> in the healthcare setting in a digital health utopia. The technology can alert experts about an impending pandemic weeks and even months before it reaches a country. It does so by digesting tons of data from news reports, airline data, and animal disease outbreaks reports. This is done in a matter of minutes, which would take humans months to go through. Once the A.I. picks up a trend, epidemiologists analyze it and issue warnings for authorities to take prompt actions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You might know it by heart now: it was an A. I. company, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbluedot.global\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">BlueDot\u003C\u002Fa>, that helped epidemiologists send out the first warning of the COVID-19 outbreak; even before the WHO and CDC had done so. However, BlueDot’s example was the exception rather than the rule. Such an A.I. might not help identify patient zero and an outbreak which might inevitably ensue. However, we have yet to see it widely adopted; we’ve all read the news of hospitals worldwide struggling to keep both patients and medical staff safe with sufficient protective equipment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If such cases of A.I. use are more widespread, authorities can take prompt action to contain the disease, well before it overwhelms them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Healthcare and smartphone data without borders\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a digital health utopia, patient data and the myriad of security and privacy issues that it usually brings along are things of the past. Indeed, privacy-preserving ways to trace those potentially with COVID-19 are in the works. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fnews.mit.edu\u002F2020\u002Fbluetooth-covid-19-contact-tracing-0409\" target=\"_blank\">MIT\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cam.ac.uk\u002Fresearch\u002Fnews\u002Fnew-app-collects-the-sounds-of-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">The University of Cambridge\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgithub.com\u002FDP-3T\u002Fdocuments\" target=\"_blank\">another group\u003C\u002Fa> of European universities have working prototypes. The latter is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-data-privacy-during-a-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">a growing concern amidst the pandemic\u003C\u002Fa>, with governments around the world using methods that expose the private lives and data of citizens.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Health tech at your doorstep\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this secure, interconnected paradise, people actively manage their health with digital health sensors and wearables. These keep them updated about their vitals in real-time. Should they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcan-wearables-help-detect-if-you-are-infected-with-the-coronavirus\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">show subtle signs of an infection\u003C\u002Fa> without any overt symptoms, these devices can notify their physicians who can recommend subsequent actions. Integrating such data into medical records can further allow an A. After taking a test sample, patients can send it back via the same method, without the need for human-to-human contact. S., equipped with screens to communicate and medical tools to monitor the vitals of the patient.
