While we believe that fears about technology, especially AI, replacing physicians are unfounded, we should acknowledge the impact of fast-paced innovation happening in healthcare in various medical specialties. Check it out!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Will technologies really replace doctors?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Hype and fears around technologies, especially artificial intelligence and smart robots taking over jobs are running high in every industry – and the medical world is no exception. A renowned voice in tech, Kai-Fu Lee, founder of venture capital firm Sinovation Ventures \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2017\u002F04\u002F27\u002Fkai-fu-lee-robots-will-replace-half-of-all-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\">told CNBC that\u003C\u002Fa> AI will be bigger than all other tech revolutions, and robots are likely to replace 50 percent of all jobs in the next decade. When looking at healthcare and medical specialties, radiology seems to be the prime target: in late 2016, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftowardsdatascience.com\u002Fwhy-ai-will-not-replace-radiologists-c7736f2c7d80\" target=\"_blank\">Prof Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of neural networks, said that\u003C\u002Fa> it’s “quite obvious that we should stop training radiologists” as image perception algorithms are very soon going to be demonstrably better than humans. Radiologists are, he said, “the coyote already over the edge of the cliff who hasn’t yet looked down.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcrunchbase.com\u002Fperson\u002Fvinod-khosla\">Vinod Khosla\u003C\u002Fa>, Silicon Valley investor and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcrunchbase.com\u002Forganization\u002Fsun-microsystems\">Sun Microsystems\u003C\u002Fa> founder often stresses his extreme opinions about technology replacing radiologists, but at one point \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftechcrunch.com\u002F2019\u002F06\u002F12\u002Fwhy-vinod-khosla-thinks-radiologists-still-practicing-in-10-years-will-be-causing-deaths\u002F\">he even said\u003C\u002Fa> that “any radiologist who plans to practice in 10 years will be killing patients every day,” because machine-powered solutions will have advanced to such a point that they’ll be far more effective than professional human practitioners. He also ruffled many feathers by declaring (in 2012) that in 10-15 years 80% of doctors will be replaced by AI. For example, a study showed that the combination of a deep learning system’s predictions with the human pathologist’s diagnoses for identifying metastatic breast cancer resulted in an 85 percent reduction in human error rate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, for cooperating with technologies, first, we should notice how they are reshaping individual medical specialties, then learn what skill sets need to be readjusted, and how to work with technologies as a team. We have\nto point out that there is no objective scale to accurately measure these\nchanges, and our conceptualization is based on observation rather than\nquantitative weighing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Still, we found that tasks requiring the collection, the analysis, and even the interpretation of information, such as diagnostics in general or radiology\u002Fpathology in particular, will speed up due to the use of technologies, freeing up time for other, less data-based duties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These assignments could mean more interaction-based activities – at the other extreme of our scale –, where the human factor plays a much more important role than machines ever could. For example, in the future, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fphysician-burnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence could free up time for doctors chained to administrative tasks\u003C\u002Fa>, or various robots, such as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F9-exciting-medical-robot-facts\">the TUG robot\u003C\u002Fa>, could complete simple assignments for nurses, saving time for patients. Thus, we expect specialties placed on the infographic to heavily “move” towards the creativity endpoint in the decades to come. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What will the future bring for physicians?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a consequence, looking at the role and tasks of physicians in general, we expect \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fits-time-for-the-rise-of-e-physicians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the era of the e-physician to come\u003C\u002Fa>. These empowered physicians will be the ones who use digital technologies in their practice with ease, are enabled by regulations and guidelines, empowered by technologies and experts in hunting down the most reliable and trustworthy digital health sources and innovations. They can also be described as “engaged,” when understanding the feelings and points of view of their patients, giving relevant feedback, and involving them throughout the whole healing process. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We believe that the skills and approaches that characterise this era of e-physicians, such as face-to-face communication skills, digital literacy, interdisciplinarity, knowing where to find information, and translating large amounts of data into insights for patients, among others, should always have been at the core of practising medicine. That’s the reason why we decided to collect every artificial\nintelligence-based algorithm that already received FDA approval – meaning that\nthey are proven, reliable, and accurate solutions enabled by an official\nregulator for medical use. Let’s see the infographic in details!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The\nfactors of algorithmic healing\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When\nwe started to assess the universe of smart algorithms in healthcare, we took\ninto account temporal and spatial factors, accuracy and credibility, as well as\nmedical specialties where A.I. algorithms have a chance to make the care\nprocess better. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Concerning the timeline, we noticed an uptake in the appearance of new solutions in the last years, and you can see that also in the infographic\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In 2014, only AliveCor’s algorithm for the detection of atrial fibrillation was approved. Two years later, the FDA found further four solutions ready for clinical use, while in 2017, six new algorithms were approved by the US regulator. This exponential growth just accelerated last year, when the FDA endorsed 23 algorithms in medicine. \u003Cstrong>As the first approvals in 2019 also show, we do not expect the trend to slow down. On the contrary, we will most likely see dozens of new medical A.I. solutions on the market.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Looking at the spatial factors, while \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.analyticsinsight.net\u002Ftop-6-artificial-intelligence-hubs-in-2018-an-analysis-for-their-localization\u002F\">the most important hubs for A.I. development\u003C\u002Fa> are the Silicon Valley, the Boston-New York area, Montréal, London, Bangalore, and Beijing, and the same can be applied in medicine and healthcare, \u003Cstrong>the most decisive factor for compiling FDA approved algorithms was that it is the only yardstick for credible and accurate medical software\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The latter actually means the FDA process of\nscientific and regulatory review to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of\nmedical devices supporting and\u002For sustaining human life and the most stringent\nof the device marketing applications. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The de novo pathway for device marketing rights was added to address novel devices of low to moderate risk that do not have a valid predicate device – for example in the case of software solutions such as smart algorithms. Upon successful review of a de novo submission, FDA creates a classification for the instrument, a regulation if necessary, and identifies any special controls required for future premarket submissions of substantially equivalent devices. However, geriatrics, orthopedics or pathology seem to be less prone to A.I. Certain medical specialties do not even appear in the list yet, such as pulmonology, dermatology, surgery, OB\u002FGyn or forensic medicine.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although we should not draw definitive conclusions from only this infographic, as it constitutes a snapshot of the current state of play not revealing anything about the trends.
