It stands out not just for its thorough exploration of this intricate subject matter, but also for its visionary outlook, providing a clear and understandable projection of what the future might hold.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Flh5.googleusercontent.com\u002Fg5O8fnvC6g_o_zkgKobvlf8IYlhRls2IrkJUPmyY1gQ82pLTkfDgGoB9DXZsaKEcawM04QpDjgvzhJydY16JChd6_9iOCZOLiLNZn34BgLUrkX_bOddswCE8uXjPZCpiJHdt8LfQBUifv8UvLIXQifw\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The study&#8217;s vision involves a network of internet-connected sensors on the body and around the home, monitoring the health conditions of older adults. These sensors would collect a wealth of data, which would then be analysed by machine learning algorithms. The goal? To coordinate with remote caregivers and autonomous wearable therapeutic devices to provide optimal healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This vision is a compelling one, and it aligns with many of the discussions we&#8217;ve had on this platform. We&#8217;ve previously touched on similar topics, discussing the major barriers that are currently keeping seniors out of the healthcare revolution. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsenior-health-2021\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In our exploration of this issue\u003C\u002Fa>, we identified three cornerstones:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Targeted technological innovations\u003C\u002Fstrong>: unfortunately, few technological innovations are aimed particularly at seniors. When they are, they often come with prejudices that can limit their effectiveness. This is a significant barrier that needs to be addressed if we are to make meaningful progress in this area.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Affordability\u003C\u002Fstrong>: even when technology is designed with seniors in mind, it&#8217;s often not affordable. This creates a significant barrier to access, preventing many seniors from benefiting from these potentially life-changing technologies.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Support in implementation\u003C\u002Fstrong>: even when the technology is designed for seniors and is affordable, they often don&#8217;t receive the necessary support to use these technologies effectively. This lack of support can make it difficult for seniors to fully engage with and benefit from these technologies.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Flh5.googleusercontent.com\u002Faz5vL2q7Eiq9VhV3DPiusG4PBkSxFihWtx62y1FnUGnGWunzyQGgUAmudxm2THE0Rzocal8ixkiwPsznnVyF9EauXUJc3BsbHbcp51B5F4sBySSTiAD35fJZVQiZ2Va1khHOPsECA9aGpHQN6MsHqNQ\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our takeaway from these discussions was clear: there&#8217;s a growing market for digital health technologies designed specifically for seniors. As the number of seniors grows and they require more care, the market gap expands. Therefore, providers and developers are also interested in developing digital health technologies specifically designed for them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, as our healthcare systems become more advanced, the focus is shifting towards the quality of life. Living beyond 80, 90, or even 100 years is an appealing prospect, but the quality of those years matters just as much as the quantity. With life expectancies reaching well above 80 in many countries, we should concentrate more on \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-to-make-life-worth-living-over-90\u002F\">preserving physical, cognitive, and social well-being\u003C\u002Fa>, as well as preventing age-related decline.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We&#8217;ve already seen several technological innovations that promise to help achieve these goals. These include various methods aiming to prevent muscular decline, aid our senses, and preserve mental and cognitive health. These technologies offer a glimpse of what the future could hold, and they align with the vision presented in the study by Chen et al.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2019\u002F10\u002F111_Failed-promises-in-digital-health.png\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The study&#8217;s main idea is commendable, as it discusses what health parameters can and should be measured in the elderly to prevent or diagnose the diseases that most often affect them. It also analyses existing technologies for these purposes. This comprehensive approach is a significant step forward in our understanding of how technology can be used to improve elderly care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, we must be cautious about overloading the homes of the elderly (whether it&#8217;s an institution or their own house) with technology. This should never be the goal of healthcare, caregivers, or the elderly themselves. Instead, the focus should be on using technology to enhance care and improve quality of life, not to create additional burdens or complexities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As always in digital health, these technologies should serve the purpose of helping the patient and their caregiver establish a better relationship. For example, it can simulate discussions and learn to find out how we, people, would be satisfied with the results. But it does it billions of times a day. So it improves at an unbelievable rate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This kind of AI can be used for a wide variety of tasks, such as creating illustrations, writing text, composing music, or generating new ideas.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Depending on the task, generative algorithms are trained and work in different ways. There are many models and methods, but we’ll most likely regularly meet with two these days:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), for image or sound generation, think of Midjourney, Blue Willow, AIVA or Loud.ly.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>And Transformers, that are behind text generators, like ChatGPT or Bard &#8211; also known as Large Language Models (or LLMs).&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>(The Transformers-LLM relation is like the insects-beetles situation. Transformers are a type of LLM, but not all LLMs are transformers. Transformers are the most popular architecture for LLMs these days because they are very effective for natural language processing tasks, but they are not the only ones.)\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We’ve already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgenerative-adversarial-networks-how-can-ai-learn-so-much-while-its-iq-remains-zero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced how GANs work\u003C\u002Fa>, you can easily imagine it through the forger-art detective analogy. Transformers on the other hand can be best grasped as brilliant autocomplete machines: they are trained to predict what comes next based on the previously given data.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How do they learn?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many methods to train generative AI models, and most of the now successful models use a combination of various methods.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>GANs are typically taught through unsupervised learning &#8211; which means that the AI is not learning from labelled data &#8211; there is no one showing it pictures labelled as \u003Cem>cat \u003C\u002Fem>and \u003Cem>not-cat\u003C\u002Fem>. The &#8220;supervision&#8221; in GANs comes from the adversarial process where the generator network (the forger) tries to fool the discriminator network (the art detective), and the discriminator network tries to correctly classify whether an input is real or fake. For a simpler explanation, head over to the previously linked GAN article.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Large language models, like ChatGPT or Bard are often trained using both supervised and self-supervised learning methods.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For instance, the GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) series by OpenAI is trained using a form of self-supervised learning &#8211; according to ChatGPT. The models are given a large corpus of text and learn to predict the next word in a sentence given the previous words. In this case, the &#8220;labels&#8221; are the subsequent words in the sentences themselves, so no explicit labels are needed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google’s Bard on the other hand was educated through a combination of supervised and self-supervised learning, on a massive dataset of text and code, including both labeled and unlabeled data, using the PaLM 2 model.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>General-use LLMs\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>ChatGPT was the first text-generating AI algorithm that became a massive hit among everyday people, getting a hundred million users in just two months, making it the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Ftechnology\u002Fchatgpt-sets-record-fastest-growing-user-base-analyst-note-2023-02-01\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fastest-growing consumer application in history\u003C\u002Fa>. Since then there are several other widely successful algorithms, like Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing &#8211; the latter is also based on GPT-4 and was customised for search.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These algorithms were not specifically trained for medical purposes and the regulations are lacking, but they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F6-potential-medical-use-cases-for-chatgpt\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can still be used\u003C\u002Fa> for a number of purposes even in medicine, such as writing emails or summarising research papers.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on the\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fchatgpt-in-healthcare-what-the-science-says\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> first published studies\u003C\u002Fa>, three main areas of focus for ChatGPT emerged, namely 1. clinical use, 2. answering medical questions and assisting in education, and 3. scientific writing and research.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This field is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-does-gpt-4-mean-for-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">developing at breathtaking speed\u003C\u002Fa>, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fchatgpt-alternatives-for-healthcare-and-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many alternatives are emerging\u003C\u002Fa>, both for medical and general use. The algorithms are becoming more and more versatile \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-best-chatgpt-plugins-how-to-add-browsing-learning-wolfram-and-more\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gaining new capabilities\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many open questions, but we already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhats-next-for-chatgpt-in-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have some answers\u003C\u002Fa> as well, such as LLMs are not becoming authors in scientific papers, and that medical alternatives will arrive soon.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Large language models specifically trained for medicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given the potential price of mistakes in healthcare, using just any LLM is a no-go for many tasks. You don’t want a diagnostic aid that generates answers from thin air every now and then. Here is where specialised algorithms enter the arena.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As of now, the most advanced contestant is Google’s Med-PaLM 2.
