Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top 10 healthcare A.I. news of the year that was.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. The FDA’s list of AI\u002FML-enabled medical devices marketed in the U.S.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In September 2020, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftmfinstitute.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">The Medical Futurist Institute\u003C\u002Fa> (TMFI) had its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnew-study-the-state-of-artificial-intelligence-based-fda-approved-medical-devices-and-algorithms-an-online-database\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">first research published\u003C\u002Fa> in the prestigious npj Digital Medicine journal. In it, the authors called for making information on credible A.I.-based medical tools available. About a year later, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Fmedical-devices\u002Fsoftware-medical-device-samd\u002Fartificial-intelligence-and-machine-learning-aiml-enabled-medical-devices\" target=\"_blank\">the FDA publicly released its own list\u003C\u002Fa> of A.I.\u002Fmachine learning (ML)-enabled medical devices marketed in the United States. This represents an important milestone from the FDA, which took the lead in regulating A.I.-based medical devices. Moreover, they cited TMFI’s database as a publicly available resource.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Principles for Good Machine Learning Practice laid out\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The next important piece of news in healthcare A.I. comes from a joint effort between the FDA, Health Canada, and the U.K’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). In October, they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Fmedical-devices\u002Fsoftware-medical-device-samd\u002Fgood-machine-learning-practice-medical-device-development-guiding-principles\" target=\"_blank\">laid out the 10 guiding principles\u003C\u002Fa> that can inform the development of Good Machine Learning Practice (GMLP).&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The latter aims to \u003Cem>“help promote safe, effective, and high-quality medical devices that use A.I.\u002FML”.\u003C\u002Fem> The regulatory bodies expect international standards organisations and collaborative bodies to build upon those foundational principles to advance GML.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. The potential sale of IBM’s Watson Health arm\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fibm-explores-sale-of-ibm-watson-health-11613696770\" target=\"_blank\">a February report\u003C\u002Fa> from the \u003Cem>Wall Street Journal\u003C\u002Fem>, IBM could part ways with its Watson Health arm. Even if the unit brings in around $1 billion in annual revenue, the \u003Cem>WSJ\u003C\u002Fem>’s sources say that it isn’t thought of as being currently profitable. The report \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fibm-is-reportedly-considering-a-sale-of-its-watson-health-business\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">also notes\u003C\u002Fa> that exploring a sale might be &#8220;\u003Cem>in part because physicians were hesitant to adopt artificial intelligence\u003C\u002Fem>.&#8221;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4. DeepMind working on the mother of all A.I. algorithms\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In October, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fventurebeat.com\u002F2021\u002F10\u002F12\u002Fdeepmind-is-developing-one-algorithm-to-rule-them-all\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">VentureBeat reported\u003C\u002Fa> that Google’s DeepMind is \u003Cem>“developing one algorithm to rule them all”\u003C\u002Fem>. More specifically, the company is working on a new deep learning model with the ability to emulate any algorithm that can work with real-world data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While their work is not immediately healthcare related, it is only a matter of time before this is the case, given the potentials of this new model. It could enable building an algorithm that can scan through the entire process of care with digitised data; and then create sub-algorithms for improving the flaws it could discover in the system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>5. Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health launched at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>An interesting development emerged \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmount-sinai-launches-new-department-ai-and-human-health\" target=\"_blank\">from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai\u003C\u002Fa>: the launch of its Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health. It’s the first such department within a medical school and has two main goals. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Its first aim involves training healthcare scientists to employ healthcare A.I.&nbsp;Secondly, it aims to establish an A.I. framework across its medical departments. To that end, the new department will also promote collaboration between medical and computer scientists as their work intersects within the digital health field.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>6. Alphabet’s new A.I.-powered drug discovery company\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google’s life science branch, Alphabet, took some interest in A.I.-powered drug discovery and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2021\u002F11\u002F4\u002F22763535\u002Fgoogle-alphabet-drug-discovery-deepmind-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched a new company\u003C\u002Fa> to focus on such efforts. Named Isomorphic Laboratories, it will leverage DeepMind’s A.I. work on predicting protein structure. From the latter, the new company will work on developing new models that can predict the interaction of drugs with the human body.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-companies-using-a-i-in-drug-discovery-and-development\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">a growing number of companies\u003C\u002Fa> using A.I. in drug discovery, it will be interesting to witness what Isomorphic Laboratories, aided by Google’s resources, can come up with.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>7. An A.I. dermatology assistant from Google\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google is also leveraging its A.I. expertise in the consumer-facing space. The tech giant introduced \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblog.google\u002Ftechnology\u002Fhealth\u002Fai-dermatology-preview-io-2021\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">its A.I.-powered dermatology app\u003C\u002Fa> in May. In addition to providing patients with insights into their skin lesions, the app also \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjamanetworkopen\u002Ffullarticle\u002F2779250\" target=\"_blank\">helps dermatologists and non-specialists\u003C\u002Fa> better interpret skin conditions. Guide to photographing skin of color accurately in clinical settings\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s not only Google that is investing in A.I.-enabled dermatology apps but \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-skin-care-top-8-dermatology-apps\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">a host of startups\u003C\u002Fa> have also launched similar tools. However, their usability \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F22778114\u002Fmedical-photography-racial-bias\" target=\"_blank\">often does not take into consideration\u003C\u002Fa> darker-skinned patients. This can result in worse quality of care for this demographic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Dermatologist Jenna Lester experienced this issue with her patients and set out to address the issue. She \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com\u002Fdoi\u002F10.1111\u002Fbjd.19811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">co-authored a paper\u003C\u002Fa> in the British Journal of Dermatology that acts as a guide to accurately take pictures of skin of colour for monitoring in clinical settings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>9. A.I. tool to assist in COVID-19 treatment selection\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Help might be underway from A.I. to help select drugs to treat patients with COVID-19 complications. Researchers from Emory University and Georgia Tech \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpharmaphorum.com\u002Fnews\u002Fai-tool-helps-doctors-select-best-drugs-for-covid-patients\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">developed the MOATAI-VIR algorithm\u003C\u002Fa> which can suggest FDA-approved drugs that could be considered to treat these. The scientists also postulate that their A.I. tool could be applied to future viral outbreaks as well.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>10. Predictive tools haven’t made a real difference in the fight against COVID\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the news shared so far has been optimistic about healthcare A.I., the last one on the list provides a more sober look at its assistance in fighting against COVID-19. While \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.technologyreview.com\u002F2021\u002F07\u002F30\u002F1030329\u002Fmachine-learning-ai-failed-covid-hospital-diagnosis-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\">several hundreds of predictive tools\u003C\u002Fa> were developed for this purpose, studies conclude that they have nevertheless not made a significant difference.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The U.K.’s Turing Institute \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.turing.ac.uk\u002Fsites\u002Fdefault\u002Ffiles\u002F2021-06\u002Fdata-science-and-ai-in-the-age-of-covid_full-report_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">published a report\u003C\u002Fa> in June summarising a series of workshops it held on the matter. It found little impact of A.I. tools in fighting the pandemic. Similarly, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fcontent\u002F369\u002Fbmj.m1328\">a study that reviewed over 200 algorithms\u003C\u002Fa> for diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19 found that almost none of them were fit for clinical use being at high risk of bias. Another\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs42256-021-00307-0\"> systematic review of over 400 ML tools\u003C\u002Fa> used for similar purposes on radiology images could not identify any for potential clinical use.
