Study finds pandemic-induced telehealth adoption\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It was touted that the COVID-19 pandemic \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">led to the widespread adoption of remote healthcare\u003C\u002Fa>, but now we have the hard science to back up this claim in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fstudy-365m-people-reveals-huge-jump-pandemic-telehealth-use\" target=\"_blank\">a study published earlier this year\u003C\u002Fa> that involved over 36 million people in the U.S. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In it, researchers found that in the first four months of the pandemic, 23.6% of ambulatory care contacts were made through telehealth. Amazon planning to expand its healthcare reach\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amazon has not been shy of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Famazons-march-into-healthcare-a-2021-update\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">its healthcare endeavours\u003C\u002Fa>; and kept on expanding its reach in this sector. According to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Famazon-care-healthcare-20-major-us-cities-2022-2021-9\" target=\"_blank\">a \u003Cem>Business Insider \u003C\u002Fem>report\u003C\u002Fa>, the tech giant is working on bringing its telehealth as well as in-person services to 20 major U.S. cities through 2022 to its employees. The latter \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Famazon-looks-bring-telehealth-person-care-20-more-cities\" target=\"_blank\">include the likes of\u003C\u002Fa> follow-up blood draws and exams.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But Amazon does not plan to stop there. One such company is Zoom, which \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fdoctors-may-be-able-send-patients-zoom-link-future\" target=\"_blank\">tested a telehealth mobile browser client\u003C\u002Fa> on iOS devices. Launched in August, the service simplifies the telehealth approach as it does not require an app. Providers can share a link to patients via text or email which they can use to join a meeting.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Downloading an app was a struggle for some patients, particularly the elderly or those who don’t want to clutter their phones with apps,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fdoctors-may-be-able-send-patients-zoom-link-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Heidi West\u003C\u002Fa>, head of healthcare at Zoom. “We needed to be able to support our clients to remove any friction points that make the engagement a challenge.” \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>5. 23andMe’s plan to leverage its genetic database for drug development\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Over the years since it started its operation, 23andMe has become synonymous with consumer genetic tests. Its DNA testing kits have been bought \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffeatures\u002F2021-11-04\u002F23andme-to-use-dna-tests-to-make-cancer-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by over 11 million people\u003C\u002Fa>; and this has led the company to amass a significant genetic database. According to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffeatures\u002F2021-11-04\u002F23andme-to-use-dna-tests-to-make-cancer-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a \u003Cem>Bloomberg \u003C\u002Fem>report\u003C\u002Fa> from November, the company never intended to stop at that. Anne Wojcicki, the company’s CEO, founded 23andMe with the intention to develop drugs based on genetic profiles.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is what the company is now in the process of doing. 23andMe is leveraging these genetic data to work on clinical trials for a new cancer drug. It is also exploring other potential medications for neurological, cardiovascular and other conditions. While 23andMe’s findings could be promising, it will face a host of ethical challenges with this plan given the highly sensitive nature of genetic data and the question of whether its clients were fully aware of such potential use of their data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>6. 3D printed drug for rheumatoid arthritis treatment gets FDA clearance\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>3D printing technology company Triastek’s first 3D printed drug, the T19, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002F3dprintingindustry.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftriastek-receives-fda-ind-clearance-for-3d-printed-drug-to-treat-rheumatoid-arthritis-184159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received FDA approval\u003C\u002Fa> in February. T19 is aimed at patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis; an autoimmune condition characterised by swelling and stiffening of joints. Triastek uses a 3D printing technique that enables it to customise T19 to boost its therapeutic effects. This technique is also said to minimise side effects.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>7. Apple-funded study shows remote heart monitoring potentials of iPhones and Apple Watches \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As with its Big Tech counterparts, Apple is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fapple-in-healthcare-2021\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">also eyeing the healthcare industry\u003C\u002Fa>. In particular, its focus seems heavily fixated on turning the Apple Watch into a point-of-care device. In 2021, one of the company’s funded studies further underpinned this vision. The study, conducted by Stanford University researchers, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fapple-backed-stanford-study-suggests-iphone-apple-watch-could-remotely-monitor-heart-patients\" target=\"_blank\">used sensor data\u003C\u002Fa> from iPhones and Apple Watches to assess the frailty of patients with cardiovascular conditions. The latter \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fprivacy-fears-over-nhs-plans-share-gp-medical-records-third-parties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plans to make a database\u003C\u002Fa> containing the medical records of over 55 million patients that could be made accessible to third parties. The aim of this project is to support healthcare services, plan for relevant policies and enable research. Those requesting data access would need proper approvals and cannot be used “solely for commercial purposes”. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Patients were also given the opportunity to opt out of the scheme earlier this year. But this understandably \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fprivacy-fears-over-nhs-plans-share-gp-medical-records-third-parties\" target=\"_blank\">raised privacy concerns\u003C\u002Fa>, given the rapidly-evolving nature of digital health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>9. Tech-focused diabetes clinic approach shows significant reduction in patients’ blood glucose level\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Dubai’s GluCare Integrated Diabetes Center \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fuae-diabetes-clinic-showcases-results-tech-focused-care\" target=\"_blank\">describes itself as\u003C\u002Fa> the “world’s first healthcare provider to employ integrated continuous data monitoring” and the “region’s first healthcare provider to use digital therapeutics”. The institute issued the first report regarding the outcomes of its tech-focused model this year. It reported that its patients could reach \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fuae-diabetes-clinic-showcases-results-tech-focused-care\" target=\"_blank\">an average HbA1c reduction of 1.7% points\u003C\u002Fa> over 90 days. Such a reduction can lead to a 21% lower risk in diabetes-related end-point diseases, other studies have found.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While these are great results, the tech-focused approach should not overshadow the fact that digital health is not about giving technologies to patients, but rather about using those technologies to improve the doctor-patient relationship.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>10. Researchers equipped hypertensive patients with an at-home blood pressure (BP) monitor and a companion smartphone app. In addition to keeping track of their health metrics, the latter also provided advice to better manage BP.
