Say, in June. The sad news is, the pandemic will be with us until we finally take individual responsibility. Instead of trying to avoid the jab, we should get ourselves vaccinated as soon as possible. Why? I’ll tell you in six simple, self-explanatory logical steps.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. COVID-19 will end when the coronavirus becomes endemic\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A virus becomes \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fcsels\u002Fdsepd\u002Fss1978\u002Flesson1\u002Fsection11.html#:~:text=Endemic%20refers%20to%20the%20constant,high%20levels%20of%20disease%20occurrence.\" target=\"_blank\">endemic\u003C\u002Fa> when it has a constant presence within a population in a certain area. This is the case with influenza and the existing four human coronaviruses that cause common colds. This is also how the Spanish flu ended, which is still part of the flu strains today. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fd41586-021-00396-2\" target=\"_blank\">Experts say\u003C\u002Fa> this is most likely to happen to SarS-COV-19 as well. The coronavirus becomes endemic if we can meet each other\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If we stay at home, we won’t meet other people – that means we can’t transmit the disease. For example, this year there practically isn’t a flu season. It’s not because we got rid of influenza, but because we don’t meet anyone and we’re not transmitting the virus. This in fact made some experts \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Fglobal-health\u002Fscience-and-disease\u002Fsuppressed-seasonal-flu-may-come-back-vengeance-next-winter\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">raise the red flag\u003C\u002Fa> for next year’s flu season, warning that we “\u003Cem>may face a dramatic resurgence of flu next winter, after social distancing measures cut the virus to levels not seen for over a century.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. We can meet each other if we can lift restrictions and lockdowns\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Obviously – how else are we to meet each other? Every country has its own regulations. From evening curfews and travel restrictions (like in Italy or in Belgium) to strict lockdown measures (as in Britain, Portugal or Ireland). We can lift restrictions and lockdowns if we can reduce the pressure on healthcare\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The reason behind the lockdowns is to protect healthcare systems from collapsing under the pressure of inflowing patients. Just remember the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fchoosing-between-life-and-death-during-covid-19-the-a-i-trolley-problem\" target=\"_blank\">ethical issues\u003C\u002Fa> of doctors in Italy, where they had to decide which patient to receive life-saving ventilators or an ICU bed – and who to leave without. Lockdowns would not have been imposed if healthcare systems had been able to handle the pressure presented by the virus; they were put in place to protect healthcare systems from collapse.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>5. We can reduce the pressure on healthcare if we don’t get seriously ill needing intensive therapy after being infected\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If fewer patients get sick, fewer people have to be hospitalised taking up ICU beds and care capacity upon contracting the virus. In that case, hospital capacities will free up; and medical personnel can have a well-deserved break from the pressure of taking care of too many patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>6. We can avoid getting seriously ill needing intensive therapy after being infected if we are vaccinated\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We already see in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.idsociety.org\u002Fcovid-19-real-time-learning-network\u002Fdisease-manifestations--complications\u002Fpost-covid-syndrome\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">studies\u003C\u002Fa> that COVID can have severe long-term complications, even in asymptomatic patients. It is therefore wrong to believe that it won’t do you harm if you’re young, healthy and take your vitamin supplements. You may just never know. Because throughout 2020, amazing advances have given hope that rose in science, technology, digital health, leadership and in basic human care and kindness. Anti-racist books topping the lists. More people wash hands than ever before. Neighbours caring, dogs adopted and people start searching for the real meaning of their lives. Although the current affairs always took the focus off of these positive consolidations, they were there and will stay with us in the future, giving hope not only for 2021 but for the years and decades way beyond it. Before the crisis there was already a huge burden on healthcare and it sure wasn’t high on the list of priorities by governments. \u003Cstrong>Now it is.\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Due to better diagnostics over the past couple of years, the number of chronic patients has been growing at an astonishing rate, putting a huge burden on doctors in the first place. On top of this came an even worse adversary that was invisible, fearful and deadly. And yet, medical personnel and medical systems were able to react in a matter of moments. They have been working tirelessly since the outbreak, often without sufficient protective gears and enough sleep, keeping the frontlines of healthcare and risking their own lives to save others.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And the background infrastructure is working tirelessly as well. I followed the studies and publications appearing in relation with the virus and the pandemic until the end of summer; but by now there are so many that it is no longer possible to keep up to date. Telemedicine applications, devices and platforms, A.I., therapeutic solutions, drug combinations, network science… Thousands and thousands of studies have come out in so many areas, researchers and institutions have responded so quickly that it is unprecedented in the history of humankind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Today, decision-makers have realised that no society can live without well-operating healthcare. Maybe we needed a global stressful event that is a warning big enough for us to notice.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-solid-color\">\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>Because the real crisis of our lifetime is the impending climate catastrophe.
