People need trust, clear guidance and strong leadership, as our leaders should show us a pathway out of all this. And how can we get out of a situation that is caused by a deadly virus? Before, in the pre-COVID-19-world of the 21st century we were too comforted by our wealth; it was easy to turn a blind eye on catastrophic economic decisions, defunded healthcare systems, and outright suicidal environmental policies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our everyday well-being made us careless, no wonder an entire generation of Greta Thunbergs call us ignorant – rightfully so. Populist politicians pushed science in the ‘other’ corner, making scientists’ opinion just another voice in the canon, and we failed to protest for them. Our main information-sources were influencers and youtubers and celebrities. Rarely, gurus. More often, make-up experts. (And sometimes, cats.) At times of an emergency we all need honest, scientifically-based real facts to bring us hope, calm and clarity. In the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci has become the poster figure of such scientific realism. The 79-year old physician and immunologist, who started his governmental service under Ronald Reagan, is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and his daily appearances as the lead member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force gave him an unexpected superstardom. Why? “\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FGHS\u002Fstatus\u002F1237911453832790016\" target=\"_blank\">\u003Cem>With all due respect, I served six presidents and I have never done anything other than tell the exact scientific evidence and made policy recommendations based on the science and the evidence.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa>”&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That is why. He is a person who does his job well and doesn’t care about the consequences. He often steps in front of Donald Trump to add clarifications on what the President just said. (Thank goodness for that.) And even if he’s not saying anything, his facial expressions are \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgiphy.com\u002Fgifs\u002Flaugh-donald-trump-anthony-fauci-jtQ8aWuD5WNmCkqyDH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quite revealing\u003C\u002Fa>. His reassuring words glue us to the TV every day, offering real, science-backed hope in dark times. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nbcnews.com\u002Fpolitics\u002Fwhite-house\u002Ffauci-s-absence-recent-coronavirus-briefings-draws-notice-n1192421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">At least until recently\u003C\u002Fa>. Last week he only appeared at the briefing once, when \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=xpwuMH8OlVM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he corrected the President\u003C\u002Fa> who said he’s not expecting coronavirus to return in the fall. Those forty-something years really earned their nickname, the Golden Age of Science. This era showed gigantic advancement in many fields, including the molecular basis of biology and the nature of diseases, applying science for the enrichment of humankind. Its scientists, from Einstein and Oppenheimer to the Martians (Teller, von Neumann, Szilard, Wigner, von Kármán and the others) were indeed considered something like rockstars. In our age, this superstardom of a scientist must be thought of by a magazine. This has happened to the American \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.scripps.edu\u002Ffaculty\u002Ftopol\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eric Topol\u003C\u002Fa>, who earned his \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002F2559\u002Fwireless-health-leader-dr-eric-topol-now-rockstar-of-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rockstar image\u003C\u002Fa> from GQ Magazine, in an attempt to raise knowledge and reputation of scientists.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Recently, his image needs no magazine-brushing. Due to his expert analyses and remarks, he has become a thought leader on COVID-19 in the States and beyond over the past months. He works on genomic and wireless digital innovative technologies to reshape the future of medicine, and wrote three best selling books about the future of healthcare. But he is not being followed because of that. Living up to his “poster child” scientist image, he&#8217;s incredibly active on social media (“\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5551296\u002Fcardiologist-eric-topol-artificial-intelligence-interview\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Cem>every one of that 18.000 tweets come from me\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa>”), followed by over 230k people on \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FEricTopol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter\u003C\u002Fa> only.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With him being such an information addict as he says he reads everything, we can be assured his radar-eyes see all that is worth checking. Therefore his views and analyses on the virus, its curves and its testing are definitely something to follow. He was quick to point out the fact that telemedicine \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.economist.com\u002Fopen-future\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F31\u002Ftelemedicine-is-essential-amid-the-covid-19-crisis-and-after-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will be essential\u003C\u002Fa> during COVID-19 (and later \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FEricTopol\u002Fstatus\u002F1256654711882543104?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">showed figures\u003C\u002Fa> that implied it really is), \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FEricTopol\u002Fstatus\u002F1256580421438943232?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">created charts\u003C\u002Fa>, continuously \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FEricTopol\u002Fstatus\u002F1255255550193012742?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analyzed curves\u003C\u002Fa> and reviewed \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002FEricTopol\u002Fstatus\u002F1255611410626695168?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possible treatments\u003C\u002Fa>. Using network medicine, A.I. and a fusion of the two, Barabási named \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftechnology-52120747\" target=\"_blank\">81 potential drugs\u003C\u002Fa> that could help – in the matter of ten days. Building a global network to speed up the process of finding the possible vaccine, Barabási made all predicted repurposable drugs and network-predicted drug combinations to be \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgithub.com\u002FChengF-Lab\u002F2019-nCoV\" target=\"_blank\">freely accessed\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Before COVID-19, Barabási’s lab was \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.northeastern.edu\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F23\u002Fits-not-just-your-genes-that-are-killing-you-everything-else-is-too\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.northeastern.edu\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F23\u002Fits-not-just-your-genes-that-are-killing-you-everything-else-is-too\u002F\"> on\u003C\u002Fa> a project to catalogue and map all the chemicals in our food, to understand how and why people get sick, and even before that, he used network science to discover what makes an artist successful, and, ultimately, who will succeed, and who’ll fail. All these crowd-pleasing studies made Barabási already a star among scientists. In a since many times quoted post on Facebook back in March he was among the first ones writing down on what to be expected from coronavirus, an interesting reflection for his own 53rd birthday.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the post (\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.facebook.com\u002Fbarabasi\u002Fposts\u002F10163136469520612\" target=\"_blank\">available in his native Hungarian\u003C\u002Fa>) he describes his feelings towards the future that is actually being rewritten: \u003Cem>“I turned 53 today and I have plenty of dreams for the next two decades. When nothing prevents us from going back to our old lives and when we realize that it can’t come back. For the future, the foundations of which, voluntarily or unintentionally, we began to dig two weeks ago. In part, I’m trying to figure out what it will look like. More than one kind, as a matter of fact, and possibly within the next 12-18 months (as of March). As for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gzeromedia.com\u002Fhow-to-end-the-covid-19-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\">how to stop the spread\u003C\u002Fa> of coronavirus, and how to abolish it just as smallpox, he methodically details a three-tiered approach to combating this health threat: 1. vaccination and herd immunity, 2. proper protection to prevent spread including masks and gloves, and 3. the technology tools that can track illness and infection.&nbsp;\u003Cbr>In a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ted.com\u002Ftalks\u002Flarry_brilliant_my_wish_help_me_stop_pandemics?language=en\" target=\"_blank\">TED talk almost fifteen years ago\u003C\u002Fa>, Brilliant actually forecasted a pandemic pretty similar to COVID-19, of which he recently said it’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fcoronavirus-interview-larry-brilliant-smallpox-epidemiologist\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the most dangerous pandemic in our lifetime\u003C\u002Fa>. Hopefully, this trust will remain when scientists talk about ecological collapse or climate change, and they will be able to live up to the expectations. But without a global leading body or government, he misses crucial leadership in the handling of the epidemic. We will think twice before going somewhere or meeting someone. South Korea \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fcoronavirus-south-koreas-success-in-controlling-disease-is-due-to-its-acceptance-of-surveillance-134068\" target=\"_blank\">went the extra mile\u003C\u002Fa> by using CCTV footage and bank transactions in addition to phone use in its tracing process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This could lead to certain governments, in particular totalitarian ones, to erase a layer of privacy from citizens’ life. It brings a whole new dimension to privacy and ethical issues like we’ve seen in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002Fmar\u002F06\u002Fmore-scary-than-coronavirus-south-koreas-health-alerts-expose-private-lives\" target=\"_blank\">South Korea\u003C\u002Fa>.
