It started with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Famazon-acquire-primary-care-company-one-medical-39b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon acquiring primary care provider One Medical\u003C\u002Fa> for $3.9 billion reported in late July. Barely a week later CVS declared its plans to get into primary care by the end of the year and in just about a month it\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fbrucejapsen\u002F2022\u002F09\u002F05\u002Fcvs-health-bests-amazon-rivals-for-signify-health-with-8-billion-bid\u002F?sh=695bb0f91cbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> announced to buy Signify Health\u003C\u002Fa> for $8 billion, beating Amazon in the process. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The CVS news was still hot when ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vice.com\u002Fen\u002Farticle\u002Fpkgadm\u002Ftiktoks-parent-company-bought-a-bunch-of-hospitals-for-dollar15b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coughed up some $1.5 billion for China’s largest private hospital chain\u003C\u002Fa>, Amcare Healthcare. And just another few weeks passed until \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fbrucejapsen\u002F2021\u002F10\u002F14\u002Fwalgreens-takes-bigger-52-billion-stake-in-doctor-clinic-partner-villagemd\u002F?sh=4249d0d128da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walgreens published its plans about a new “Walgreens Health” division\u003C\u002Fa>, which plans include a $5.2 billion investment for the 63% stake of primary care company Village MD. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>3. Virtual Wards Becoming A Reality\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The idea of allowing some patients to heal in the comfort of their homes is nothing new. There is a vast amount of data proving that people with certain symptoms heal better at home. They are not at risk of hospital infections. Not under the strain of missing the family. And so on, the benefits are numerous. The pandemic was, at least in this respect, the pressure and motivation the virtual ward idea needed. Many hospitals\u002Fhealthcare systems came to the same conclusion as their capacities were crumbling under the pressure of COVID waves. Some patients don’t actually need hospitalisation. They only need monitoring. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although virtual wards debuted during the pandemic, the model is capable of effectively treating a much wider array of symptoms and conditions. WHO Launched A Freely Accessible AI Healthcare Worker, Florence 2.0\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With a WHO-projected shortfall of 10 million health workers by 2030, it is very clear that some disruptive ideas are in dire need to make healthcare systems work in the 2021 century. After all, people are living longer, and as of yet the growth in global populations hasn’t stopped. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews\u002Fitem\u002F04-10-2022-who-and-partners-launch-world-s-most-extensive-freely-accessible-ai-health-worker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2.0 Florence version\u003C\u002Fa> provides a multilingual, innovative, and interactive platform for disseminating various health-related topics. It can share advice on mental health, give tips to destress, provide guidance on how to eat right, be more active, and quit tobacco and e-cigarettes. She can also offer information on COVID-19 vaccines and more. Smart TVs Becoming A Remote Care Platform\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The concept of turning one’s TV into a remote care hub isn’t new. Back in 2012,\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC3558392\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> researchers designed\u003C\u002Fa> a remote health assistance system for the elderly to use through a TV set. Already we are seeing separate visions and differing versions of the metaverse from Big Tech that don’t talk with each other, leading us to think in terms of ‘metaverses’ instead of a single interoperable metaverse. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On top of that comes practical issues with access to and handling VR headsets that pose as – currently at least $500 – enablers of the metaverse. Even if that is an accurate estimate, it’s challenging to figure out what to do with that number, especially if the test provider’s control population may significantly differ from yours. In my case, living in the middle of Europe, such values would tell more if they were compared to the Caucasian population in Central Europe – which they are not. Therefore while you receive quantified results, it’s really hard to use those results in your health or disease management\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pathway analysis tries a different approach, focusing not on single genes, but on the “functions” of those genes. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.frontiersin.org\u002Farticles\u002F10.3389\u002Ffphys.2015.00383\u002Ffull\">Pathway Analysis\u003C\u002Fa> (PA) aims to detect relevant groups of related genes and seeks to overcome the problem of interpreting overwhelmingly large lists of important but isolated genes detached from context. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In plain English, PA aims to analyse the ways our bodies work and find the ones in which we may have problems. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to do the DNA test\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The 3×4 test didn’t differ significantly from other tests. You collect your sample with a cheek swab and send the package back to the company. It includes your basic metrics, like age and weight, lifestyle questions about how you eat and how much you exercise, and some basic questions about your general health and mood, among others. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The report on 36 pathways\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>3×4 Genetics was the first provider offering to send the final report in an encrypted mail, which I think is a big plus. The report evaluated my results in 36 pathways. I learned, for example, how not paying attention to proper resting can turn into anxiety, or how foods high in histamine might affect my psychological well-being. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I did learn some new things, and they make sense\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The report contained lots of things I was already aware of from my previous genetic tests, but it also offered some interesting new inputs. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>It highlighted that I’m “highly resistant in releasing fat from stores”, which is in line with my extended family being unanimously obese. Without very carefully managing my weight, I would be overweight too. Fortunately, my lifestyle has kept my BMI under 23 for my entire life and I plan to keep on doing so.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>The report also explained why I was always good in sprint runs and terrible in long-distance runs: I am on the lower end of the endurance scale. On the other hand, I do particularly well in power sports. I also learned that I recover from exercises somewhat slowly, and need to support the process in several different ways.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>“As a slow metabolizer,” I also need to limit my caffeine intake – another insight that reinforces what I learned by experience. Drinking coffee after 3 pm will make me sleep unwell. Now I can be sure I’m not just imagining it. \u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>I also scored “very high” on the mood&balance scale, meaning I may be highly susceptible to an imbalance (anxiety, depression and related behaviours). As someone with a dopamine reuptake disorder, this also makes a lot of sense and explains my novelty-seeking nature, and why I constantly need to get into something new, like chess and baseball and so on.
