Are you OK with touching the door handle? Having your temperature checked at the reception? Doing yoga in the studio? \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The past months have \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theatlantic.com\u002Fhealth\u002Farchive\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fhow-pandemic-will-change-future-fitness\u002F612187\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">changed our way of thinking about the gym\u003C\u002Fa>. This has always been the place we go to do exercise, for we&#8217;ve got the motivation, the drive and, in part, the enthusiasm. The gym gave us the perfect surroundings to workout. However, over the last months we had to find this motivation within ourselves. Which is not an easy thing to do. Luckily, we have support: our health data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Quarantine-boogie\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>People all over the world tried at least one sort of online exercise at home during the lockdown, I’m pretty sure of that. I myself certainly did, and you might not be surprised to hear that I’ve used some gadgets as support. I always try to test the latest at-home medical devices and I also love to share my experiences.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In fact, by now I have tested and used more than a hundred devices and gadgets that measure health parameters and vital signs. Dozens of gadgets on the healthcare wearable market promise you a healthier lifestyle, collecting amazing amounts of data and helping you with training. Anyone who started binge-eating, or binge-watching (TV or Netflix), probably also did some binge-sporting (if there was no such word before, there is one now). Everyone, from fitness instructors to yoginis moved over to Zoom, YouTube or Facebook\u002FInstagram Live. It’s definitely been a long way from \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=deKHYCsjseg\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Fonda\u003C\u002Fa> to the current flow of quarantine sports. Have you tried some free \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.corepoweryogaondemand.com\u002Fkeep-up-your-practice?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\">online yoga\u003C\u002Fa> classes? Exercised at no cost \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcentr.com\u002Fjoin-us\" target=\"_blank\">like Thor\u003C\u002Fa>? Did \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fchannel\u002FUCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ\" target=\"_blank\">P.E. with Joe\u003C\u002Fa> and your kids? Worked the body \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nike.com\u002Fntc-app?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\">with Nike\u003C\u002Fa>? \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdancingalonetogether.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Danced alone together\u003C\u002Fa>? Or at least tried a bit of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fi\u002Fstatus\u002F1245094660172910593\" target=\"_blank\">at-home tennis like Nole\u003C\u002Fa>? (And has anyone tried the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.euro.who.int\u002Fen\u002Fhealth-topics\u002Fhealth-emergencies\u002Fcoronavirus-covid-19\u002Ftechnical-guidance\u002Fstay-physically-active-during-self-quarantine\" target=\"_blank\">WHO’s recommendations\u003C\u002Fa>?!)&nbsp;&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And I don’t think we’ll ever go back to what once was normal. Beside the obvious germophobia from door handles and locker doors to fitness machines and common showers (pools! saunas! breath!), simply being so close to so many unknown people would be enough to keep many people away from the gym scene altogether. Until now, the gym (the court\u002Fthe yoga studio\u002Fdojo) was the sacred core of our workouts. They had the machines. Or the knowledge. The coach. And even the bar. How are we going to do sports in the post-COVID future?!&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Wearables and data to the rescue\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Engaging in a sports activity really helps keep not only your physical, but also your mental, and emotional health in shape. But even with precautions and social distancing measures, a gym is typically a place that is hard to keep virus-free.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2019\u002F09\u002F0815_tmf_infographic-01-1-scaled.png\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Before COVID-19, I spent 2-3 days in the gym with a coach who would keep me extra motivated. He also helps me analyze the data from my wearable sensors and change the pace or the exercise accordingly. As COVID-19 hit, I spent the first two weeks setting up a daily schedule for myself, along with a workout routine. I also wrote to my coach and asked him to help me out online. And as he is just as tech-savvy as I am, we hopped onto gadgets.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My coach really uses the data I collect with my trackers. (I have a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffitbit-ionic-review-bromance-pebble-smartwatch\" target=\"_blank\">Fitbit Ionic\u003C\u002Fa> on my wrist and I also use a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-health-wearables\" target=\"_blank\">Polar chest strap\u003C\u002Fa> during sports.) He claims that this way he can give me better advice and make better decisions regarding my workout. He still gives me a lot of motivation, however, when considering my post-COVID life, I really don&#8217;t think I will be going back to the gym, or at least not too often. What for? I have my motivation. Data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Wear. Train. Track. Evaluate. Repeat.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Working out at home surely has its advantages. You don’t need to go anywhere. You don’t need to touch a door handle. (You can wear your comfy sweatpants.) No matter which activity you choose to do, there is an app and a tracker for it at your service. And with the help of these, you don’t even need to pay for a trainer but follow the instructions and beat yourself. As a matter of fact, if you need company, you can beat others, too, as there are services that allow friend or \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsupport.apple.com\u002Fen-us\u002FHT207014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">competitive mode\u003C\u002Fa>. (Even more: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fitocracy.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MMORPG features\u003C\u002Fa> for the gamers-at-heart!) Then there are also ones that have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.techradar.com\u002Fbest\u002Fhome-workout-apps#1-aaptiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">motivational coaches\u003C\u002Fa>. Or apps that give you personalised workouts like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fitbod.me\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fitbod\u003C\u002Fa> or the free \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.endomondo.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Endomondo\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2017\u002F11\u002Ffitbit-ionic-review-cover.png\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Alongside applications, wearable devices provide vital data for your workout routine. These can track nearly everything: heart rate, steps, distance, speed, hydration level, fatigue, muscle activity, pulse oximetry, sleep patterns, breathing, posture, electrodermal activity, hydration level and so on. They really can give you a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-gazillion-of-health-data-you-can-measure\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gazillion of health data\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When health data is not enough\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-dark-side-of-health-trackers\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">do have a dark side\u003C\u002Fa>. Besides now-common fears of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-data-privacy-during-a-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\">data privacy\u003C\u002Fa>, many wearable tracker users complained they feel \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fhow-we-discovered-the-dark-side-of-wearable-fitness-trackers-43363\" target=\"_blank\">stress or pressure to reach\u003C\u002Fa> their daily targets. From a device that is expected to help release stress, this isn’t a good outcome. But as they can help you get better and better, there’s only one thing that is still missing from your training. For many people, the gym is not just a place to train. It is a social spot, a place to chat, suffer and unwind. It provides that nitty-gritty human contact that is missing from even the best app or VR glass there is.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find your drive\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However you decide to do it, sport is health and therapy in one. As for myself, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-can-you-learn-about-your-lifestyle-in-a-simple-spreadsheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I learned long ago\u003C\u002Fa> that I need daily exercise to keep my mental health intact. There was no tracker, health sensor or wearable back in 1997 when I started to quantify my health to live to my fullest physical, emotional and mental capacity – for as long as possible, but at least beyond 100 years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>I started to collect data on a piece of paper – and as a starter, I advise you to do the same. I gave a score from 1 to 10 to my mental, physical and emotional health, and I disciplined myself to follow through every day\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Starting in 2016, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F6-months-sleep-tracking-experiment-learnt\u002F\">an Excel spreadsheet took over the paper notes\u003C\u002Fa>, and I’ve been refining the system step by step ever since – according to the technological changes (new fitness trackers such as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffitbit-ionic-review-bromance-pebble-smartwatch\u002F\">my latest fitness pal\u003C\u002Fa>) or my changing needs. For example, based on my system, I figured out that I need daily exercise to keep my mental health, so \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-can-you-learn-about-your-lifestyle-in-a-simple-spreadsheet\">in 2017\u003C\u002Fa>, I intensively exercised 27 minutes on average every single day. Last year, I had 25 minutes of intensive exercise on average per day, and I trained 150 hours altogether.
