In the U.K., \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.singlecare.com\u002Fblog\u002Fnews\u002Fprescription-drug-statistics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 26% of adults\u003C\u002Fa> take prescription medications. Across the Atlantic ocean, in the U.S., \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.singlecare.com\u002Fblog\u002Fnews\u002Fprescription-drug-statistics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some 66% of the adult population\u003C\u002Fa> take prescription drugs. Down in the South Hemisphere, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.singlecare.com\u002Fblog\u002Fnews\u002Fprescription-drug-statistics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around 35% of Australians\u003C\u002Fa> take such medicine on a daily basis.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With those millions of medicine-taking people comes the inevitable risk of medication errors. In England alone, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fcompany\u002Fnewsroom\u002F237-million-medication-errors-made-every-year-in-england\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researchers found\u003C\u002Fa> that over 237 million medication errors are made every year.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ultimately, these add up to the losses incurred both financially and, more importantly, in terms of patient lives. One way to tackle these issues is through medication management. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rcn.org.uk\u002Fclinical-topics\u002Fmedicines-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defines medicine management as\u003C\u002Fa> “the clinical, cost-effective and safe use of medicines to ensure patients get the maximum benefit from the medicines they need, while at the same time minimising potential harm”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the methods employed have been stagnant for long and still leave room for improvements, as the numbers show. As healthcare steadily pivots towards digital health, what future do the relevant, novel technologies paint for medication management? Stick with us as this is what we will explore in this article.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Medication management, compliance and the empowered patient\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When it comes to medication management, there are two key sides: the administrative (clinician\u002Fpharmacist) and the patient side. This means that issues can sprout from either end of the spectrum and at every stage of the process from prescribing to dispensing. Considering recent statistics from the U.K. alone, medication errors cost the NHS around £98 million and over 1700 lives every year; and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fcompany\u002Fnewsroom\u002F237-million-medication-errors-made-every-year-in-england\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">researchers consider these\u003C\u002Fa> losses as “definitely avoidable”. On a global scale, it’s easy to project the magnitude \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pillsy.com\u002Farticles\u002Fmedication-adherence-stats\" target=\"_blank\">to be severalfold\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This represents a significant burden that is preventable but that novel technologies in the digital health era can help address. However, the same era is defined by the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fempowered-patients-in-the-digital-age\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">empowered patient\u003C\u002Fa>. Equipped with digital health tools, having access to their own health data and engaged in online patient communities, the latter are more proactive in managing their care. Engaging them in medication management can thankfully be made possible through digital health approaches and we’ll consider those in the next section.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Medication management in the digital health age\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the accessibility of connected devices and remote care, patients and their physicians can share a new dynamic to manage medication. Physicians can prescribe digital health tools to assist patients in managing their medications while also enabling them to monitor adherence. For their part, patients can turn to their doctors remotely in case of concerns. Below are 5 digital health tools that could improve medication management and enable this new dynamic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. Smart pill dispensers\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Digitally enabled pill dispensers like the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjoin.herohealth.com\u002Fqjzo-g\u002Fmanage-my-meds\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hero Automatic Medication Dispenser\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medacube.com\u002Fpages\u002Fhow-it-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MedaCube\u003C\u002Fa> deliver audible and visual cues to remind patients to take their medications at the right time and dose. These help manage medication regimens and can sync the data with a caregiver or doctor. With this approach, they can be notified when refills are needed or when the patient doesn’t respond to several missed dosage alerts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Digital therapeutics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other types of software also hold promise in the future of medication management, in particular \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-are-digital-therapeutics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">digital therapeutics\u003C\u002Fa> (DTx). These evidence-based, clinically evaluated software undergo regulatory oversight to ensure their safe and effective use as well as their clinical impact.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One such DTx product is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdtxalliance.org\u002Fproductinsulia\u002F\">Insula\u003C\u002Fa>, a prescription-only software that assists type 2 diabetics to manage their condition. Of note, not all drugs will bear the same technology; as digital pills are more appropriate in niche areas where compliance can and should be improved with this tech. For example, patients with severe mental health conditions or the elderly having challenges adhering to their medications can benefit more from digital pills.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>etectRx’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2019\u002F12\u002Fnew-smart-pill-maker-gains-fda-approval\u002F?rf=1\" target=\"_blank\">FDA-approved digital pill\u003C\u002Fa> gives patients more control over when monitoring starts. It involves a removable lanyard rather than a patch, which patients can remove after taking their medicine. Infármate’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcordis.europa.eu\u002Farticle\u002Fid\u002F418365-pill-tracking-device-promises-targeted-personalised-care\" target=\"_blank\">SIGUEMED\u003C\u002Fa> comes with a trackable blister pack, alerting caregivers when patients take a pill. A companion app informs of the right time to take the pill and alerts contact persons if a mistake has been made.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>5. Telemedical platforms\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>All of these above options can be supplemented by telemedicine consultations. Through these, patients and physicians can routinely hold remote consultations to ensure proper adherence of patients’ to medications. The latter can in turn use such platforms to request advice or raise concerns with their physicians. Given their rising adoption \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">as a result of the pandemic\u003C\u002Fa>, patients and physicians can leverage the availability of such platforms for medication management.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>While these tools hold promise in medication management and enable the digital health patient to become more proactive in their care, they are not definitive solutions. A single ventilator fitted with it can provide ventilatory support for two rescuable patients until individual ventilators are available.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>J&amp;J also explored other digital health technologies that proved to be valuable during the crisis. The collaboration involves a study using the Apple Watch to determine whether the device can detect atrial fibrillation earlier so as to reduce the risk of developing stroke and improve health outcomes. Paul Burton, J&amp;J’s vice president of medical affairs, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2020\u002F02\u002F25\u002Fapple-johnson-johnson-heart-study-is-a-big-deal-for-digital-health.html\" target=\"_blank\">even told CNBC\u003C\u002Fa> that this study “\u003Cem>represents the largest randomized trial in the history of cardiovascular disease\u003C\u002Fem>.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>J&amp;J also made moves in the clinical sphere with its surgical robotic platform \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.massdevice.com\u002Fbreaking-johnson-johnson-finally-unveils-its-new-robot-assisted-surgery-system\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">announced last November\u003C\u002Fa>. Designed with six arms and integrated into the operating table, this new system aims to provide better control and flexibility to surgeons.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Pfizer: eyeing digital therapeutics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pfizer is another pharma giant whose name is closely attached to a COVID-19 vaccine; but like its competitor J&amp;J, it has also been venturing into the field of digital health. More specifically, it seems to have grown some interests in the emerging \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-are-digital-therapeutics\" target=\"_blank\">digital therapeutics (DTx) solutions\u003C\u002Fa>. In 2018, it partnered with appliedVR and Samsung Health to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-pain-reduction-kit-against-chronic-pain\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">develop digital pain reduction kits\u003C\u002Fa> using virtual reality technology. The focus will be on using artificial intelligence in drug discovery in the fields of cardiology and oncology. Later that year, the pharma giant \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbayer-looks-digital-partnerships-expand-efforts-cardiometabolic-care-oncology-and-womens-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched its G4A Digital Health Partnership Program\u003C\u002Fa>. Through the latter, it will support both early-stage and experienced companies to develop digital health tools.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prior to this initiative, Bayer also invested in other digital health startups. For instance, in August 2020, they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbayers-equity-investment-development-commitments-bring-nearly-100m-one-drop\" target=\"_blank\">invested in One Drop\u003C\u002Fa>, the maker of a data-driven blood glucose monitor system. With this new round of funding, this startup will expand its expertise in other areas like cardiology, oncology and women&#8217;s health.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In June 2021, the German company \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2021\u002F06\u002Fbayers-investment-arm-leads-digital-health-startups-90m-round\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">invested in yet another digital health startup\u003C\u002Fa>: Ada Health. The latter is known for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-big-symptom-checker-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">its A.I.-based symptom checker\u003C\u002Fa>. Through this investment, the two companies also plan a broader strategic partnership.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Novartis: juggling between projects and failures\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Embracing digital and data is a top priority for Novartis,” the company’s chief medical officer John Tsai \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fhow-novartis-embracing-digital-and-data-revolution\">once said\u003C\u002Fa>. The Swiss pharma giant has been walking that talk in recent years; even after its ill-fated partnership with Google to develop blood glucose level-sensing contact lenses that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-diabetes-management-8-reasons-why-we-face-extraordinary-times\">didn’t amount to a viable product\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In late 2019, it teamed up with another Big Tech company, Microsoft, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnorth-america\u002Fnovartis-taps-microsoft-new-ai-initiative-drug-discovery-development\">on an initiative\u003C\u002Fa> to use A.I. for drug discovery and development. More recently, the Swiss pharma giant partnered with a number of digital health startups. Last November, they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnovartis-teams-smartpatient-new-tool-patients-wet-macular-degeneration\">teamed up with smartpatient and the MyTherapy app\u003C\u002Fa> for a new feature to provide personalised educational material for wet macular degeneration patients and their caregivers.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In April, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fkaiku-health-joins-forces-novartis-melanoma-monitoring-and-support\">partnered with Kaiku Health\u003C\u002Fa> on a tool to assist in the remote monitoring and support network of melanoma patients. The pharma giant \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnovartis-trial-shows-no-benefits-pears-schizophrenia-app-ceo-cites-trial-irregularities\">published results of its clinical trial\u003C\u002Fa> with Pear Therapeutics&#8217; new digital therapeutic for schizophrenia in January. They are also actively partnering with startups and tech giants so as to maximise their chances of staying relevant in the ever-evolving digital health world.
