There are two types of diabetes: when the body does not produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) and when the organism cannot utilize the generated insulin (type 2 diabetes). While the latter can be prevented with conscious lifestyle choices, the former is a mystery to the medical community. But if someone has diabetes,&nbsp;that means having a constant companion.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In both cases, the treatment of the symptoms requires constant blood glucose control, which usually requires a kind of insulin intake at regular intervals, as well as blood pressure control and\u002For foot care.&nbsp;It is a truly technologically dependent condition: you need&nbsp;to monitor your blood glucose level, your blood pressure, your weight, follow a meal plan, test your blood every now and then. The search engine giant and Novartis signed an agreement in order to cooperate on the development of the digital contact lens patented in 2014. According to the plans,&nbsp;through the lens, you can get more information from the digital world plus it can measure blood glucose levels from tears as an added benefit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google and Novartis said the lens would&nbsp;contain a tiny and ultra slim microchip&nbsp;that would be embedded in one of its thin concave sides. Through its equally tiny antenna, it would send data about the glucose measurements from the user’s tears to his or her paired smartphone via&nbsp;installed software.&nbsp;Originally, the companies promised to put the digital contact lens around 2020 on the market, but&nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ffortune.com\u002F2016\u002F11\u002F18\u002Fgoogle-novartis-contact-lenses\u002F\">Novartis Chief Executive Joe Jimenez in 2015 said that&nbsp;the contact lens would be on track to begin testing that year &#8211; and backtracked later\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Since then, there has been no news about the state of progress. There are already companies leveraging on your inner child.&nbsp;There are amazing applications for smartphones that can help you manage diabetes efficiently. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmysugr.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MySugr\u003C\u002Fa>, an Austrian company, released several applications that can add a little bit of gamification to the traditional diabetes management apps.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company also developed the mySugr Junior App designed for kids to learn how to manage diabetes properly. It also enables parents to keep control over the therapy when they are not around the kid. The app looks like a game in which the children get points for every entry and the goal is to score a particular amount of points every single day.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Patient empowerment with&nbsp;big data\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I have been quantifying my health for decades, I have even done so before the start of the wearable revolution: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-one-year-excel-spreadsheet-experiment-that-changed-my-life\u002F\">in an excel spreadsheet\u003C\u002Fa>. The device can measure blood glucose levels constantly and decide upon the insulin delivery itself.&nbsp;Engineers from Boston University have developed a \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.artificialpancreas.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bionic pancreas\u003C\u002Fa> system that uses continuous glucose monitoring along with subcutaneous delivery of both rapid-acting insulin and glucagon as directed by a computer algorithm. However, it was not in commercial use.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As there was no single device on the medical market, which was able to monitor blood sugar and supply insulin automatically, creative persons invented a DIY version from existing technologies. As I mentioned above, a grass-root (social media) movement called #wearenotwaiting grew out of the initiative, who campaigned for the introduction of such artificial pancreas on the market for years persistently. The Israeli company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.consumerphysics.com\u002Fmyscio\u002F\">SCiO\u003C\u002Fa>&nbsp;uses a technology similar to TellSpec’s but is designed to identify the molecular content of foods, medicines, and even plants. The company says that in milliseconds the ingredients and molecular make–up of the foodstuff will appear on the user’s smartphone. However, their promises have yet to be fulfilled, as the scanner, they&nbsp;introduced on the market \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftechcrunch.com\u002F2016\u002F09\u002F16\u002Fscio-the-pocket-sized-molecular-analyzer-is-making-everyone-angry\u002F\">does not exactly deliver what the demo did\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Nima gluten-sensor&nbsp;(already on the market!) was named \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F4115398\u002Fbest-inventions-2015\u002Fitem\u002Fthe-sensor-that-sniffs-out-gluten\u002F\">one of Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions of 2015\u003C\u002Fa>. It is a portable, nicely designed gadget, which is able to tell you from a small food sample within two minutes, whether the food on your plate contains gluten. In 2016, Medtronic announced its partnership with IBM Watson. Listing of personal health skills could enable patients to show their doctors they are active participants in their care.&nbsp;That means being a patient is not a passive adjective, but a very active verb.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How to present complex patient info easily to doctors?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Medical Futurist reached out to the idea initiator, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fbetabetic\">@betabetic\u003C\u002Fa> or Lindsay Fallow, a software developer turned science journalist; who is coping with multiple endocrine problems including adrenal insufficiency and a type-1 variant diabetes, plus severe asthma and gastric issues. That means she needs to have some of her hydration and nutrition through a central IV. It becomes clear just by reading the listing of all these medical conditions how complex skill-set it must take her to manage them on a daily basis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She said she was walking her dog and contemplating about an upcoming appointment with a new specialist when the idea popped into her mind. She was thinking about how to present the complex and massive amount of information that she knows about her illnesses. “\u003Cem>So I was thinking, this doctor needs to know that this is something I do normally &#8211; because physicians have a habit of thinking that their patients are a bit weird when they turn up with ‘professional’ style information.\u003C\u002Fem> \u003Cem>And how crazy is it to imagine that people who have health problems wouldn’t bring all of their experience and expertise to their health &#8211; whether professional or personal?\u003C\u002Fem> Who you are, defines how you deal with anything life throws at you… yet our medical records do not store that&#8221;, she explained.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So, she created a one-pager where she included bits and pieces about her personal and professional life. Fallow listed what kind of technologies and social media she uses, trackers such as Fitbit, Garmin or Strava. Moreover, she entered all the resources and assets that help her manage her condition starting from her supportive partner until the medical alert dog. She described what symptoms she struggles with and what her current goals are with regards to managing her illness. It is clear, concise and might be very helpful to doctors. She said that she has only tried once so far, but the initial response was very positive. Well-known health tech and patient advocate, Susannah Fox, told The Medical Futurist that \u003Cem>the juxtaposition of professional and personal lives is what grabs her when she sees the #patientCV conversation.\u003C\u002Fem>&nbsp;&#8220;We are encouraged to publicly list our work-related skill sets, such as in our CVs or on LinkedIn, but rarely our personal health skills. By owning that hard-won experience as patients or as caregivers, we own our power&#8221;, she added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, Fallow believes everyone should be cautious when introducing things to physicians that are changing how ‘patienting’ – the way she calls the activity of being a patient – is done by the doctor because it could both help and do harm. The patient-doctor communication is a delicate rapport and needs to be treated with respect. On the other hand, she thinks that the Patient CV should become a core part of any healthcare plan; as 99.9 percent of the work in managing illness is done by the patient and not the medics. We cannot agree more. It’s a great tool for empowering patients and showing healthcare professionals that being a patient is not a passive condition but an active participation.
