It’s somewhere between 5.30 and 6 a.m., wakeup adjusted to her very own circadian rhythm. The 76-year-old loves the early mornings, that’s when she gets the most creative. Before retirement, she had a small art gallery in San Francisco but moved when the tech scene overtook the city, and rental prices went crazy. Now, she lives in a hacienda-style house with a porch, two cats and her \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-top-12-social-companion-robots\">social companion robot, Liz\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At first, the tech-phobic grey-haired dame with tie-dyed clothes from her hippie era and thousands of bracelets on her arms and ankles, couldn’t get over the fact that technology would create unnatural vibes around her, so she refused her children’s Christmas gift. However, after she spent two hours trapped on the floor of her bathroom after she had fallen over, Amy realized she needed company – and Liz takes care of her every need. She reminds her to take her medication, keeps her agenda, makes sure she doesn’t forget her calls or feeding the cats. After preparing breakfast for Amy, Liz’ face lights up and tells her that it’s time for some fun. It’s already 8.30 p.m., and he likes to read the good-old-fashioned paperback books before going to bed. That’s a challenge sometimes as he is in his 80s having diabetes with a high risk of developing diabetes-related eye disease. Thus, sometimes he lets an audiobook take over from where he left off the book. And that’s why he wears several \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-tattoos-make-healthcare-more-invisible\">digital tattoos\u003C\u002Fa> monitoring his blood pressure, his blood oxygen level, temperature, glucose and hydration level, ECG and heart rate. If any value goes out of the normal range, the tattoo sends a notification to Takashi as well as his nurse, and when she sees something strange, she calls up the doctor. The retired engineer doesn’t have to go anywhere for examinations, his own medical-grade portable diagnostic devices always do the trick, but sometimes a nurse goes to him and helps with the procedures. Otherwise, he usually talks to his doctor with the help of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-telemedicine-solutions-bringing-patients-doctors-closer\">telemedical applications\u003C\u002Fa> and his huge screen on his living room wall.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although he lives alone, he is surrounded by two social companion robots, owns and cultivates his very own, “pocket-sized” Japanese garden on the fringes of the city – he started it as one of his robots, Ilo, recommended it as a new exercise -, and often talks with his brother and his wife through Skype or FaceTime.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At 9 p.m., with his book in his hands, he receives a call. It’s from Amy. Although Takashi doesn’t speak English, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-makes-you-a-superhero\">the Babelfish real-time translator\u003C\u002Fa> does the trick for them. And what do a retired American artist and a Japanese engineer have in common? They are both members of the digital Pickwick Club, a network of book-lovers connected through their nursing home discussing anything from Stephen King to \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.hawking.org.uk\u002Fa-brief-history-of-time.html\">A Brief History of Time\u003C\u002Fa>. That’s their way of never feeling lonely and bonding with like-minded humans. As the nursing home operates throughout the globe, without the need for seniors to actually move from their homes, anyone could sign up to be a member of a similar club. Moreover, the nursing home’s very own \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-greatest-technological-developments-for-the-elderly\">activity tracker\u003C\u002Fa> makes sure every member pays attention to his or her physical fitness. It’s absolutely taken care of. An A.I. algorithm carefully analyzes the data of applicants for the Pickwick Club, and pairs members not only according to their interests but also according to their personality traits or medical histories. That’s how Amy, an early bird was paired with Takashi, who used to work late into the night in his active years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Today, Jane Austen’s Emma is on the agenda, but first, they have to wait a bit for Nadege from Rwanda and for Dipak from Kolkata. The latter is always late no matter how many notifications his social companion robot or chatbot sends him. And it’s not even about him not being at home or close to a digital device – he’s just too immersed in one.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Many years ago, he suffered a car accident, and he got paralyzed from the waist down. The doctors told him he would only be able to walk \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffuture-of-sports-medicine\">through an exoskeleton\u003C\u002Fa> and he should, unfortunately, give up climbing. It took a while until Dipak accepted that he cannot go to Nepal again, meet his favorite sherpas and conquer the Annapurna, the 10\u003Csup>th\u003C\u002Fsup> highest mountain peak in the world. However, when he realized that he can \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-does-medical-virtual-reality-make-healthcare-more-pleasant\">turn to virtual reality\u003C\u002Fa> and continue his hobby in virtual worlds, his entire life changed. His passion for life returned, he needed much less medication for his back pain, and he started to take an active part in the daily events of his populous family again.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And how did he end up in the Pickwick Club? Before trying VR, his doctors suggested he read as it could stimulate his brain and to have conversations with completely different people, as that would refine his social skills. He was hesitant but gave it a try. He has been a member of this treasured Club for the last five years. And though he’s sometimes late due to VR climbing, he already promised the Pickwick Club to organize a VR group climbing experience so they would also know what it feels like.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When he realized he was late again, he jumped over to the screen to meet Amy and Takashi in a split second. It was around 2 p.m. in the country \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-in-rwanda\">where digital health became real the earliest on the African continent\u003C\u002Fa>. The 72-year-old lady is surrounded by a swarm of trackers and wearables, which monitor her entire digestive system. She takes microchip-enabled pills every day which are connected with her doctor notifying him in case of emergencies. It is a specially adjusted medication, completely in balance with her genetic background and medical needs: the advances in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fmydna-review\">pharmacogenomics\u003C\u002Fa> as well as in nutrigenomics enable Nadege to get indeed what her body demands. And she doesn’t have to leave home for it. Her digital tattoos monitor her medical state, and her social companion robot takes special care of her diet. She is in constant touch with her doctor and her family through telemedicine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, her daughter visits her every week, and they cook together. Nadege loves cooking, but her hand tremor makes it difficult to follow recipes and ration the ingredients, so her daughter helps her. Luckily, Nadege already figured out how to eat better: she uses \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-food-the-food-of-the-future\">smart spoons and forks for complicated meals\u003C\u002Fa>. So, she was eating out with her daughter when her \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-12-health-chatbots\">mental health chatbot, Molly\u003C\u002Fa>, reminded her that the Pickwick Club is waiting for her. Molly is a great virtual companion when she leaves home, and her social companion robot cannot follow her. The dystopic scenario details possible consequences of gene therapies that might make us think about how to prevent ethical issues in time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Following the death of 26-year-old Petra Pollutino, NYPD has confirmed that the woman bled to death as a result of her 6-month old fetus bursting out of her womb. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pollutino was attending a tennis match Saturday, 14 August 2055 at the New York Tennis Club when she suddenly fell ill. Witnesses reported gruesome scenes. They described Pollutino having fallen to the ground screaming and clutching her stomach while blood had poured out on the ground. Some witnesses even reported seeing a little hand reaching out of her stomach; but this has yet to be confirmed by medical personnel. Pollutino was rushed to the hospital where they had to perform an emergency C-section. But that was already late, the doctors couldn’t save her. She was pronounced dead at the hospital later that evening.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Superbaby with super-strength \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Doctor Che De Lee from The New York hospital reported at Tuesday’s press conference that the baby is in a stable condition, but will require intense follow-up the next couple of months due to some abnormal findings. \u003Cem>“I can confirm that Petra Pollutino bled to death as a result of her own baby leaving the womb through the abdominal wall.\u003C\u002Fem> This situation is highly unusual, to say the least. We have never seen anything like it before. The infant is the size and weight of a fully developed baby, which is much larger than what you would expect of a fetus at 6 month’s gestation. Only the muscles and connective tissue are of larger scale, while the organs are underdeveloped. The US-based private company provides services to design the optimal offspring by modifying genes of the germ cells. The participants can choose from a range of genes coding for qualities involving height, IQ, musicality, hair, eye and skin color, and type and strength of muscle tissue.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The source reported that Pollutino had augmented genes following the newly updated Fitness Genome Profile for her pregnancy. The old FG-profile involved the genes ACTN3 and ACTN1, which are related to skeletal muscle fiber structure and function, the ACE I gene, coding for angiotensin-converting enzyme that responds better to exercise than the D form, as well as PEX14, TGFA and SYT1. These are all involved in muscle cell communication with the nervous system. The updated FG-profile reportedly also involves a seventh gene – the so-called FST, follistatin, which had not yet been trialed in humans but has shown extreme muscle growth in mice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Future Times has reached out to GATOO but the company refused to comment on the case.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>We’ve seen it before: complications due to gene therapies\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in a report released in January that around 20 percent of the GATOO embryos are spontaneously aborted; while another 10 percent get some form of unwanted genetic complication.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Previously reported complications of the therapy are muscle dystrophies after failed FG-profiles and severe schizophrenia due to IQ-enhancing therapy. These persons are popularly called Augments. Look at 15-year-old Charles Roes, the reigning world chess champion or Martha Groebel who set a new world record at the 400m sprint at last week’s youth Olympics – at only nine years old. Since GATOO’s privacy policy does not require the names of Augments to be public, it is speculated that some of the top athletes might have actually grown up as subjects of this therapy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After Groebel’s record-breaking run, several sports institutions have called for a new law requiring GATOO to make the list of Augment names public. When Daan Fleimgat crushed the previous Olympic record holder, Usain Bolt’s time on 100m sprint at the 2052 Olympics, Bolt’s tweet caused outrage with its not-so-subtle accusations of GATOO involvement:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>“Kudos to Daan on his new record.
