Here, we collected the most often used digital health buzzwords and placed them on our buzzword radar.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Digital health is ripe for hype\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As digital health is gaining momentum, more and more companies come forward with their disruptive ideas; or at least with their claims about having built disruptive digital health solutions. For the reason that online presence or at least some digital dimension are intrinsic to these products, that imposes specific features to their marketing behavior. As information flows faster and reaches more people than ever, while everybody else has that very same condition, the number one challenge is to stand out from the crowd.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As \u003Cstrong>the online space seems to value sensationalist titles, brands, and messages, digital health companies are also inclined to participate in the big game for attention. \u003C\u002Fstrong>Even if that means overselling their technology or using trendy buzzwords. For example, in the case of the blockchain, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Farticle\u002Fus-blockchain-companies\u002Fblockchain-name-grabbing-has-echoes-of-dotcom-bubble-idUSKBN1FS1F3\">Reuters explained in its analysis\u003C\u002Fa>, the average share price of companies who have jumped on the bandwagon and put the word “blockchain” into their name, has risen more than threefold since their re-branding. These conditions serve entrepreneurs who do not necessarily wish to create better healthcare through their inventions but go for big money in a relatively short time. Just look at what happened with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-12-most-overhyped-technologies-in-healthcare\">Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos\u003C\u002Fa>. She promised to revolutionize blood testing, and investors flocked to the company. However, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Ftheranos-has-struggled-with-blood-tests-1444881901\">after the Wall Street Journal raised its serious concerns\u003C\u002Fa> about the viability of the project, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fu-s-regulator-bans-theranos-ceo-elizabeth-holmes-from-operating-labs-for-two-years-1467956064\">in July 2016, regulators decided\u003C\u002Fa> to revoke Theranos’ license to operate a lab in California because of unsafe practices and to ban Holmes from the blood-testing business for at least two years. That’s a significant backlash to the once $9-billion worth company. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-theranos-will-decide-the-future-of-medical-innovation\u002F\">Since then, it turned out there is not even proof or evidence that Theranos did what they claim they did.\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Theranos-like stories are especially damaging as they undermine scientific achievements as well as the power of digital health technologies. We believe the best antidote is to clear up the fog of misconceptions and confusions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Health market players who claim to use A.I., apply in fact artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), mostly natural language processing and computer image\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In healthcare, medical imaging enterprises build on these technologies extensively. And sometimes you can even have better results without it. At first, you’re tasked to send back the cheek swab of your child, and within 2-3 weeks, the enterprise provides you with the genetic test results. The company says that it’s necessary to know the possible health risks as well as genetically determined development curves of the baby to be able to sensitively monitor how the little one progresses. Do we have advanced spaceships as proposed by the great science-fiction TV series Star Trek? There are some futurists who even log their performance and there are also famous authors remembered worldwide due to “getting things right”. McDaniel, a very optimistic doctor of his era, for the year 1999. His predictions included a 150 year life span, a cancer vaccine, and the complete eradication of infectious disease. And the result? Sterile, neutral, perfectly dehumanized robots living the simulation of life and society. The issue of genetic modification also appears in Ursula K. le Guin’s award-winning 1969 novel, \u003Cem>The Left Hand of Darkness\u003C\u002Fem>—set on a distant world populated by genetically modified hermaphrodites. The book is a thought experiment about how society would be different if it were genderless. Gattaca, a science-fiction drama starring Ethan Hawke, also paints a rather dark picture about the possible outcomes of genomics. Clarke’s book touches upon these feelings. It aims to cover the whole history of mankind – from prehistoric, barbaric times until the final race between men and machine. According to the story, a special police unit is able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes. And what if the officer from that special unit is accused of a future murder? Lately, robots not only feature in movies as episode-characters but started to gain more significant roles – as a reaction to happenings in real life.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Frobotics-healthcare\u002F\">certain robot companions\u003C\u002Fa> who can serve as a social partner in order to alleviate loneliness or treat mental health issues. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jibo.com\u002F\">Jibo\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ald.softbankrobotics.com\u002Fen\u002Fcool-robots\u002Fpepper\">Pepper\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.parorobots.com\u002F\">Paro\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.bluefrogrobotics.com\u002Fen\u002Fhome\u002F\">Buddy\u003C\u002Fa> are all existing examples. It focuses on a robot with artificial intelligence that can do this job in almost a human way. The cognitive part refers to what we can do within the boundaries of science today. The estrangement part is where the author tries to extrapolate and think ahead which creates the feeling of alienation in the reader. This is a wonderful way of thinking about the future while keeping current possibilities in mind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Science fiction is amazing and we need to digest not only those pieces that feature paradises and utopias, but also those describing a dystopic world. Sci-fi is not only for geeks and nerds.
