We imagined in a short story how a day with constantly failing technology would look in the future. Fasten your seat belts, doomsday is coming!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The.Worst.Morning.Ever.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Murphy slowly opened his eyes and looked around: he could hear noises from the street and his dog barking very loudly in front of the door. There was one thing he could absolutely not hear: his \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fanalyze-sleep-quality\u002F\">smart sleep alarm\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Cstrong>When he looked down at his smartphone lying next to his bed, it was stone-dead. He jumped out of bed and tried to search for what time it is. Unfortunately, there was absolutely no electricity due to a blackout, so he couldn’t find any working electronic device with a time screen, but he suspected it should be late. Very late\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He ran out of his apartment without paying attention to the fact that he was only wearing underpants. He scared the neighbor, Mrs. Mulligan, to death but she told him that it’s way after 10 am. Murphy was supersonically late from work. Luckily he didn’t have any big presentation or meeting going on. Or at least he thought – he couldn’t see his calendar either as both his computer and his phone was dead. He could find only one power bank – but he forgot to charge it fully, so it was only enough for one phone call with his boss. The call went terribly as she had called him several times about the surprise visit of investors. They expected to see Murphy. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now, facing work trouble and having a half-dead phone, our poor protagonist jumps into his self-driving car. After the morning’s tale of woes, Murphy hopes for the worst – but the car engine starts, they are on the road soon with some wild music on. As he screams “On Fire” to the windscreen, the car suddenly stops. To download the latest updates. In the middle of traffic. He cannot stop the program. In the next second, he got a notification from his ECG sensor packed into his fitness tracker that he should go to the doctor. Immediately. This might be a heart attack or a stroke.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>After seconds, his doctor also called to tell him that an ambulance car is coming for him. His coworkers and his boss were as pale as death when the car arrived and saw how nervous Murphy was. However, when he arrived in the hospital, the doctor told him that it was only a false notification.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The ECG sensor couldn’t update itself during the night and there was some bug in the new version. Murphy felt relieved and devastated at the same time. How could this ECG sensor prove to be so unreliable?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>His doctor also felt embarrassed. So, he told him to go and have a nice meal for lunch. Murphy took up the recommendation and went to a nice restaurant. However, as he is gluten-intolerant, he always carries a food sensor with him to make sure that the meal is prepared in a way that’s not causing him any digestion troubles. But as you could guess that wasn’t working well on that cursed day. Instead of 2-3 minutes, it took the sensor 15 minutes to show the results. Murphy was already going crazy and almost gave up on eating as a habit altogether. So, he went back to his office and shut the door so he could prepare for the meeting. However, the AR glass, which was supposed to project him the details of the project and significant background information, kept sending him weird signs. Something must have been mixed up in the code – so Murphy could absolutely not distinguish between projection and reality anymore. Pink dinosaurs flew in the air in-between investment data. He got so frustrated that he just threw the AR glass in the corner. Of course, he had to explain himself later…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>However, that was nothing compared to what happened next. He received an e-mail from his \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-health-insurance-preparing-for-dr-big-brother\u002F\">insurance company that they received the case file about that morning’s ‘fake heart attack’\u003C\u002Fa>, so they started to dig deeper in his case –they stumbled upon Murphy’s genetic test accidentally and they found risks for Alzheimer’s disease, Type 2 diabetes, as well as Parkinson’s disease. As a consequence, they have to increase his premium.\u003C\u002Fstrong> As the insurance company has a corporate contract with Murphy’s company, it didn’t take long for Murphy’s boss to get to know this information. Now, the boss, who is already very frustrated with our poor protagonist’s performance, asks him for guarantees that he won’t be out of work due to such diseases in the future. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Murphy is devastated but promises to his boss to go to the doctor immediately. So, he goes back to the hospital to visit his GP’s office there. However, the online check-in was down due to a hacker’s “beneficial undertakings” and so he didn’t have any chance for telemedicine either – he had to wait for four hours. It was already late in the evening. When the doctor sees his nervousness, aggressivity, anger, and tiredness, he mistakes that for depression and prescribes him an antidepressant – based on his genetic background. However, he forgot completely what he had left behind in the morning. He forgot to feed his dog and he left him in the apartment, so now the place is as if hurricane Dorian has just drifted through it. At that moment, Murphy wanted to just crash on the couch and immerse in other realities. So, he took his VR goggles, made some space on the couch covered in yogurt, and turned the device on to just go to Mars and never look back. However, he had to realize that his license had expired, and he forgot to renew it. Now, the terrain of Mars is full of ads about antidepressants and snake-oil for losing weight. He felt devastated. He screamed aloud, then shrugged his shoulders and decided to just go to bed. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Tomorrow’s gonna be another day. A way better day. What will we eat? What will we as interplanetary people worry about? Where will we find peace and how will we connect with each other? So, I often scribble down my thoughts into short tales and ask the question whether that’s a scene I wish for in the future. Here are three of my latest sci-fi short stories. What do you think? Should the future look like these?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Dr. Big Brother\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I ordered steak. The menu item blinked in red twice in my digital lens but I didn’t care. I was very hungry and I love meat. Since it became possible to merge our genomic data with health records in the cloud synchronized with each and every digital device, choosing food has turned into a stressful activity. They wanted to tell me what and when to eat and it has made me crazy. They knew better what me and especially my body needed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My grandfather told me that back in the day nobody knew what the hell you were eating. You just went to a restaurant, ordered and finished your meal. Simple as that. I know they died from a lot of diseases without any foreseeable signs but still. That freedom of choice is special.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I don’t even understand why we bother to eat at all today. Just choose whatever is tailored to me and bring it in a powder or something. It’s not worth the effort when it’s so expensive to eat less healthy foods or choose what is out of my metabolic bounds.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sometimes I wish I were in the old ages with infections, sudden deaths, and short lifespans. But man, going out to eat whatever you want must have been a hell of an experience. Fluffy, green grass below me on the top of the hill that looks down on Japanese monasteries. Trees are all around and the wind is softly blowing. Just the right temperature at just the best time of the day in the early morning hours. I’m not cold or hot yet the Sun is shining gorgeously. I love spending time here. That’s the only place where I feel calm and my mind is still energized. I come here whenever I can, which doesn’t happen often nowadays. This place has a special meaning to me as I never made it to Japan. Well, I never will…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My mask just became transparent and electrodes were released from my skin. I guess my time is over. There is no calm sound of the gentle wind but the constant buzzing of ventilators. I don’t even hear them anymore unless I get back from my virtual sessions. It’s room temperature, there is artificial light and there is no grass just the metal floor below me. Exactly what you would expect from the interiors of a spaceship. Long corridors, narrow spaces, and small rooms. It makes me feel I don’t belong here.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When everyone and everything you know is years away from you, it’s hard to keep it together. These virtual sessions I use for meditation are the only things that keep me sane during the long flight. You have your chores but it takes more to satisfy a curious human being like me. I have been bonding with the robots on board and I can have sessions with my loved ones at home. I can wait 20 minutes for a response. We signed up for the greatest mission of humanity thus we mustn’t be weak. Yet, I hope we don’t lose what makes us human on the way. I hope we create green hills, clouds, and trees on the Red Planet.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If we cannot make it happen, if Mars remains a pile of stones without a soul, we will pretend it has one so we will belong there. Just like at home. The symptoms were rare and it just didn’t add up. Before the patient arrived at our ward, we had already discussed every potential diagnosis that popped up in our minds. We knew we needed help.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the patient was admitted to the OR, I uploaded the case to the cloud, which was a quick process because of the new control with new hand gestures. My lens recorded everything blurring out the patient’s face for privacy, and the digital network of colleagues around the world jumped right on it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By the time we determined the patient’s status, the first ideas came in and one of them seemed particularly matching. That Japanese physician had the same case a while ago. I projected his holographic image into the OR so we could discuss it live. During the short discussion, he dropped a few guidelines his artificial intelligence assistant found and we could feed our system with it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The treatment was on the way but my lens started projecting data into my vision. A new patient just got admitted.
