With high-profile partnerships and hires in this sector, its intentions are evident, even if secretive.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prominently, we have its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2017\u002F07\u002F26\u002Famazon-1492-secret-health-tech-project.html\" target=\"_blank\">internal healthcare group known as 1492\u003C\u002Fa> working on a number of projects under tight wraps. This team’s endeavours involve forays into health apps, telemedicine and electronic health records. The company had already sold over-the-counter medications in the U.S. before and now it could sell prescription drugs online, further disrupting the distribution chain. It further helped Mayo Clinic develop \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmayo-clinic-adds-covid-19-skills-amazon-alexa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a COVID-19 symptom checking tool\u003C\u002Fa>. This feature can even be added to the skills of Alexa home devices such as Echo and Echo Dot.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To top if off, Jeff Bezos’ company gave us a peek into its healthcare vision with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Famazon.care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Care\u003C\u002Fa>. Available for Amazon’s employees, this service features a remote consultation app as well as at-home physician visits. It could serve as a testing ground for the company to implement its radical healthcare plans.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Alibaba’s giant leap into healthcare\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>E-commerce giant Alibaba has long branched out in other sectors and among them is healthcare, where it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.scmp.com\u002Ftech\u002Fchina-tech\u002Farticle\u002F2146639\u002Falibaba-health-expand-ai-investments-improved-sales-e-commerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is quite active\u003C\u002Fa>. Alibaba Health, the company’s healthcare branch, has doubled down on medical A.I. investment and remote consultation services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Jack Ma’s philanthropic endeavour, the Jack Ma foundation, also lent a helping hand during the COVID-19 crisis. The latter aims to facilitate collaboration efforts among experts around the world to fight the pandemic. It’s also supporting research institutions with A.I., big data, and cloud computing capabilities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Google’s relentless medical moves\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fabc.xyz\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">original founders letter\u003C\u002Fa>, Google’s co-founders wrote that “Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one.”; and this couldn’t be further from the truth. The search engine turned into a hardware maker, a verb, a defier of the aging process and even more adverbs will probably define the company in the years to come. Notably, Google has made significant moves into the medical sector, despite its earlier failures.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of its latest moves was \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgoogles-acquisition-of-fitbit-boon-or-doom-for-the-fitness-tracking-industry\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the acquisition of Fitbit\u003C\u002Fa> in late 2019. While this\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Feurope-google-fitbit-acquisition-privacy-risk-2020-2\" target=\"_blank\"> raised significant privacy issues\u003C\u002Fa>, it was a clear move that the company was serious with the fitness industry. Its previous efforts in this area such as Google Fit, Wear OS or its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fcontent\u002Fgoogle-pays-40m-fossil-mystery-smartwatch-tech-reportedly-misfit\" target=\"_blank\">acquisition of Fossil\u003C\u002Fa> were meager at best. The company further opened up its Google Cloud service’s  \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F20\u002Fgoogle-cloud-health-api-released.html\" target=\"_blank\">Healthcare API\u003C\u002Fa> to facilitate healthcare information during the pandemic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Samsung bringing high-tech healthcare directly to the public\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Apple’s bitter rival is apparently focusing its healthcare efforts with a patient-centric approach via technology-driven devices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Its Galaxy Watch Active2 smartwatch packs more than phone notifications and a clock. Could smartphones and networked services solve transportation in healthcare?\u003C\u002Fh5>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is getting to the doctor such a hassle?\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wherever they live, in rural areas or in impoverished urban areas, people face the same issue in getting access to healthcare services: \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theatlantic.com\u002Fhealth\u002Farchive\u002F2015\u002F08\u002Fthe-transportation-barrier\u002F399728\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">transportation\u003C\u002Fa>. Some households don’t have a vehicle or share one among multiple family members. Moreover, for those who are disabled, obese or chronically ill, riding the bus or the subway can be a difficult undertaking.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>John Lewis former CRO of the startup Circulation that since had been acquired by \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmodivcare.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Modivcare\u003C\u002Fa>, a platform that sets up transportation of any kind for patients to ensure they make it to their doctors’ appointment, told The Medical Futurist that “\u003Cem>transportation barriers are a leading cause of gaps in healthcare in the US. Each year, around 3.6 million patients miss at least one medical appointment due to lack of access to transportation.”\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible solutions: the US and CHWs\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Each state in the US has a\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fkff.org\u002Fmedicaid\u002Fstate-indicator\u002Fnon-emergency-medical-transportation-services\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> “non-emergency medical transport”\u003C\u002Fa> (NEMT) benefit for people with Medicaid, covering a certain number of rides per month, and some Medicare Advantage plans also include a limited number of trips each year. Some states contract with local companies to provide rides; others enlist volunteers or hire taxis; and some even offer \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rand.org\u002Fblog\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fnon-emergency-medical-transportation-in-the-time-of.html\" target=\"_blank\">ride-share NEMT services\u003C\u002Fa> like the above-mentioned \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnew-lyft-feature-lets-patients-call-their-own-rides-while-healthcare-clients-foot-bill\" target=\"_blank\">Lyft\u003C\u002Fa> (since 2016) and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.uber.com\u002Fus\u002Fen\u002Fbusiness\u002Findustries\u002Fhealthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Uber\u003C\u002Fa> (since 2018), and kept on doing so even during the pandemic, under CDC guidance. Several private insurers also have transportation benefits, but there might be certain preliminary conditions to meet, or may involve co-pays.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There is also the system of \u003Cstrong>community health workers\u003C\u002Fstrong> (CHWs) helping patients navigate the healthcare system. CHWs, caregivers\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theatlantic.com\u002Fhealth\u002Farchive\u002F2015\u002F08\u002Fthe-transportation-barrier\u002F399728\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> typically without health-care backgrounds\u003C\u002Fa>, will coordinate transportation for patients to and from appointments, motivate them to take their medications, and help them implement positive lifestyle habits. In 2020, nearly 60,000 \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bls.gov\u002Foes\u002Fcurrent\u002Foes211094.htm\" target=\"_blank\">CHWs were employed\u003C\u002Fa> in urban, rural, and tribal areas of the United States, but given the fact that they are often volunteers, they thus don’t appear as CHWs in statistics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Flh3.googleusercontent.com\u002FiIAhGmrVXQKqirnEQeMXIr783l2H9En0ViWrL_5X5kla5Mn-GVv0OYm5l25XjEFRQNpDVrTavlAMWuD_pTYKZRvh_2J2MknbtRQ3GgfNh6qQnXsW1RbrYMPKkr4MuYsFt4YKCkGq=s0\" alt=\"transportation in healthcare\"\u002F>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: Minnesota Community Health Worker Alliance\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Europe: the government hand-in-hand with hospitals\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the old continent, it’s usually the government and medical facilities who are responsible for patient transportation. In the UK,\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pantonium.com\u002Fwere-not-in-kansas-anymore-european-solutions-to-non-emergency-medical-transportation\u002F\"> when patient \u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pantonium.com\u002Fwere-not-in-kansas-anymore-european-solutions-to-non-emergency-medical-transportation\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transport\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pantonium.com\u002Fwere-not-in-kansas-anymore-european-solutions-to-non-emergency-medical-transportation\u002F\"> service (PTS) is required\u003C\u002Fa>, healthcare providers will connect their patients with an appropriate service provider. The government provides some regional PTS services through National Health Service ambulances. However, currently, small and large private businesses run most \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthwatch.co.uk\u002Fnews\u002F2021-08-02\u002Fyour-views-helped-improve-non-emergency-patient-transport-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">patient transport services in Britain\u003C\u002Fa>. Yet, the system has serious flaws wherein patients wait \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ageuk.org.uk\u002Flondon\u002Fnews--campaigns\u002Farchive\u002Fsick-of-waiting\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long hours, miss appointments, etc\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In France,\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pantonium.com\u002Fwere-not-in-kansas-anymore-european-solutions-to-non-emergency-medical-transportation\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> patient transportation services are provided in three different ways\u003C\u002Fa>, by ambulance, by light medical vehicles (VSL) and by taxi. When a patient needs transport to or from a doctor or hospital, they can take a cab, VSL or ambulance, then make a claim to Social Security for the cost to be reimbursed. The patient’s facility or physician chooses whatever approved service with which they have contacts. In the past few years, this model has been attacked by the French government because of the spiralling costs of taxis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yawning gaps to fill\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So far governments, healthcare providers and traditional businesses contracting with medical facilities for patient transportation could not give a comforting solution to the issues of getting patients to their doctor’s appointments on time. High costs, long waiting times, missed visits, poor communication, administrative affairs – the list of downsides is too long. Too many people experience transportation barriers in healthcare and a too big market niche, which cannot be left out of sight.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, it was a difficult question whether ridesharing businesses, such as Uber or Lyft could disrupt healthcare the way they did with taxi services. It has since signed deals with several hospital systems and medical transportation companies. In May 2017,\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bcbs.com\u002Fnews\u002Fpress-releases\u002Fblue-cross-and-blue-shield-and-lyft-join-forces-increase-access-health-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Blue Cross Blue Shield Association announced a partnership with Lyft\u003C\u002Fa>, to provide the option to patients to get to their local pharmacies by car to pick up their prescriptions or to arrive at their primary care appointments on time. The startup partnered with Lyft and offers a wide range of vehicles.
