The major down being \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F04\u002Finvesting\u002Fhaven-shutting-down-amazon-jpmorgan-berkshire\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">the end of Haven\u003C\u002Fa>, a partnership it started three years ago along with Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and J.P. Morgan Chase. This venture aimed to provide healthcare services and insurance at a lower cost to those companies’ employees; with the potential to expand to other firms as well.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This setback did not mean that Amazon is backing away from healthcare. However, the American firm has been steadily building a foothold in this industry in recent years without any signs of slowing down. In the U.S., Walmart established \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Ffinance\u002Fis-walmart-health-the-future-of-us-healthcare.html\" target=\"_blank\">600 COVID-19 testing sites\u003C\u002Fa>; is planning to roll out COVID-19 vaccines \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Fconsumerism\u002F9-numbers-that-show-how-big-walmart-s-role-in-healthcare-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">in 11 states\u003C\u002Fa>; and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Fstrategy\u002Fwalmart-may-roll-back-its-ambitious-push-into-healthcare.html#:~:text=Walmart%20has%20opened%2020%20standalone,labs%2C%20counseling%20and%20other%20services.\" target=\"_blank\">has already opened 20 standalone healthcare centres\u003C\u002Fa> complete with primary care, emergency care, labs and more. It plans to open \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Fconsumerism\u002F9-numbers-that-show-how-big-walmart-s-role-in-healthcare-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">15 more this year\u003C\u002Fa>. By 2029, Walmart’s board even plans to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Fconsumerism\u002F9-numbers-that-show-how-big-walmart-s-role-in-healthcare-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">scale to 4,000 clinics\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Their aim is to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible; and their advantage in potentially achieving that is that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Fconsumerism\u002F9-numbers-that-show-how-big-walmart-s-role-in-healthcare-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">90% of Americans live within 10 miles\u003C\u002Fa> of a Walmart store.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>IBM might be distancing itself from the industry\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Watson Health, IBM’s A.I. healthcare arm, has met with some considerable challenges in recent years. It received wide criticism \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fibm-responds-recent-watson-media-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">following reports\u003C\u002Fa> that questioned its diagnostic prowess while pointing out potential risks to patients’ safety. It also faced management issues and had to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fspectrum.ieee.org\u002Fthe-human-os\u002Frobotics\u002Fartificial-intelligence\u002Flayoffs-at-watson-health-reveal-ibms-problem-with-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lay off part of its workforce in 2018\u003C\u002Fa>. In early 2021, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fibm-is-reportedly-considering-a-sale-of-its-watson-health-business\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news emerged\u003C\u002Fa> that IBM is considering to sell Watson Health altogether.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company invested considerable resources into Watson Health which, despite past issues, continued to yield promising results. In February, researchers at the branch shared their findings after training their algorithm to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2021\u002F02\u002F01\u002Fhealth\u002Falzheimers-prediction-speech.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predict with 75% accuracy\u003C\u002Fa> who among elderly patients could develop Alzheimer’s.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>IBM abandoning these efforts comes at a surprise, but it can be attributed to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fibm-is-reportedly-considering-a-sale-of-its-watson-health-business\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">reluctance among healthcare workers\u003C\u002Fa> to adopt such A.I. tools.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Apple using the Apple Watch to make patients the point of care\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Apple entered the healthcare market later than its competitors but is working on acquiring a significant share of the market, if its recent moves offer any indication. To validate the efficacy of its Apple Watch, the company has teamed up \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.beckershospitalreview.com\u002Fhealthcare-information-technology\u002F5-ways-apple-has-expanded-into-healthcare-in-the-last-month.html\" target=\"_blank\">with various institutions for establishing its clinical accuracy\u003C\u002Fa>. In 2019, it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2019\u002F04\u002Fmicrosoft-healthvault-is-officially-shutting-down-in-november\u002F?rf=1\" target=\"_blank\">pulled the plug on HealthVault\u003C\u002Fa>, its online personal health record system, which was launched in 2007. Its line of fitness trackers, the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002Fcircuitbreaker\u002F2016\u002F10\u002F3\u002F13152590\u002Fmicrosoft-band-discontinued\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Band\u003C\u002Fa>, also followed a similar fate. But instead of giving up, Microsoft refocused its efforts towards cloud computing and A.I. in healthcare. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Earlier this year, the company released its Vaccine Registration and Application System aimed at assisting the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the U.S. However, users \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnew-jersey-blames-microsoft-weeks-vaccine-rollout-glitches\" target=\"_blank\">encountered issues\u003C\u002Fa> with the platform, which were addressed with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmicrosoft-releases-new-vaccine-management-platform-after-technical-issues\" target=\"_blank\">a new offering\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the U.K. Microsoft \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.microsoft.com\u002Fen-gb\u002F2021\u002F03\u002F19\u002Fmicrosoft-to-work-with-13-start-ups-using-ai-to-help-uks-health-manufacturing-and-resource-sectors\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">teamed with 13 startups\u003C\u002Fa> working on A.I. tools to help the country’s healthcare sector.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Google’s healthcare branches Alphabet and Verily are very active\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Whether it’s in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdeepmind.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">medical A.I.\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgoogles-acquisition-of-fitbit-boon-or-doom-for-the-fitness-tracking-industry\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">fitness tracking\u003C\u002Fa>, Google’s presence in healthcare is palpable through its numerous arms, which are forging ahead in the field. Verily, Google’s Alphabet healthcare branch, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercebiotech.com\u002Fmedtech\u002Fotsuka-and-click-therapeutics-tap-verily-s-platform-for-digital-depression-treatment-study\" target=\"_blank\">announced its partnership\u003C\u002Fa> with Otsuka and Click Therapeutics in February for a clinical trial that will study the effects of digital interventions on patients with major depressive disorder. The research project will leverage Verily’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.projectbaseline.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Project Baseline\u003C\u002Fa> platform. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Alphabet’s Verily also \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Fpayer\u002Falphabet-s-verily-joins-highmark-google-cloud-project-living-health\" target=\"_blank\">announced another partnership in March\u003C\u002Fa> with Highmark Health for the Living Health Initiative. The latter aims to redesign healthcare delivery with a focus on patients. This collaboration will employ Verily’s digitally-enabled tools for personalised chronic care management of conditions like congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>NVIDIA\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The graphics processing unit (GPU) manufacturer has been making strides in the healthcare industry; and even has a dedicated healthcare branch to offer solutions that its computing platform can deliver in this area. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Its latest foray in healthcare involves \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnvidia-harvard-team-genome-research-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\">a partnership with Harvard University\u003C\u002Fa> to develop an A.I.-based genome research toolkit. It is even touted as being able to sequence a whole genome in 30 minutes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The developments touched upon here show that tech companies will play a major role in the future of care with the products they can bring to the table. The introduction of artificial intelligence, robotics, social media, various sensors and wearables in medicine could save millions of lives and reduce costs at the same time. There is one question, however, which needs to be answered. Shouldn’t they ensure the smooth advancement towards the paradigm-shift from offline to digital healthcare?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Well, the question is a little bit more complex. Pharmaceutical companies have decades-long experience in healthcare but most of them are still struggling with adopting new technologies. This is just not their strongest arm. Some new medical companies are good at adopting technology, but have no experience in introducing breakthrough changes into healthcare. There have been failures in the past when technology companies tried to dive into healthcare. For example Google launched its Google Health personal health information centralization service in 2007. Entering information was voluntary, and once registered, Google Health used the information to provide the user with a merged health record, information on conditions, and possible interactions between drugs, conditions, and allergies. However, the service was stalled four years later because – according to the official reasoning – it was not having the broad impact the developers hoped for. Some argued that \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002F11480\u002F10-reasons-why-google-health-failed\">Google Health was unsuccessful for numerous reasons\u003C\u002Fa>: it was not social and fun for users, it did not involve healthcare professionals, it was difficult to use, poorly marketed and for Google it was difficult to partner with insurance companies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FMicrosoft_HealthVault\">Microsoft HealthVault\u003C\u002Fa> has a similar story – the difference is that the platform still operates. Microsoft created it as a web-based personal health record system in October 2007, to store and maintain health and fitness information. The situation is a little bit similar to using the Finnish sauna. You go in there, basically sit in hot steam for the next 10 or 15 minutes, then you go outside – and you jump into or pour onto yourself a lot of ice-cold water so that your whole body will feel it. If you do it half-heartedly and you just put your little toes into the water, then it does not have a real healing effect on you.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I’m not saying there weren’t any progress. Users have to place their thumb on the sensor, and only wait for 30-seconds for the analysis to complete. We are still waiting for the big breakthrough and as digital health plays the main role in this transformation, it will more likely come from tech than pharma companies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Moreover, when did Samsung, Amazon, HP, Dell, or Sony decide to disappear from this story?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>So why are tech companies not bringing the disruptive change to healthcare?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Regulation\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Healthcare and pharma is a highly regulated industry where such regulatory and state-agencies like the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) have a big voice.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Evidence-based medicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The medical community is reluctant to adopt new technologies or solutions as long as there is enough evidence in medical studies. And we all know that research and publishing the results takes time and a lot of efforts.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Risking lives\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Needless to say that in healthcare, companies are „playing” with human lives. It is a risk not many companies can deal with.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Hierarchy\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Due to the current patriarchal system in healthcare, where medical professionals are superior to patients in decision-making (don’t worry, for not long as the patient empowerment revolution is on its way), companies have to deal with different levels of participation. It’s not enough to persuade patients if their caregivers are not on board.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Empowerment.\u003C\u002Fstrong> In healthcare, almost all services and technologies have been accessible in the ivory tower of medicine without giving access to other actors. This creates an additional obstacle for tech companies for rolling out their own products.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Quality of technology\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In healthcare, it is not enough precaution if the device will not blow up in your hands. It needs to be accurate, sensitive, easy-to-use and reliable because medical professionals might base their decisions on the data they provide. Thus, patients need high-quality, reliable and long-lasting products. Stakeholders of healthcare are not used to it and they will appreciate honesty.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Don’t underestimate\u003C\u002Fstrong> the power of evidence-based medicine. If you can prove through peer-reviewed studies that your idea works, the medical community will back you immediately.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Acknowledge\u003C\u002Fstrong> that changing healthcare is taking place through a cultural revolution (how we adopt to new technologies).
