Amazon’s distribution network can change the way we think of pharmacies in the future. Microsoft can bring steadiness, reason and predictability. Apple’s design and seamless approach make us see systems as flawless organisms. Google’s in-depth knowledge of A.I. and its practical use in cure. IBM bringing its power and history onto the field of machine learning and quantum computing. As we wrote in our related article, in 2017, when Amazon received drug distribution licenses in over 10 U.S. states, the news sent traditional players in the pharmaceutical market into a frenzy. Amazon’s pharm plans further expanded when it bought startup online pharmacy PillPack for nearly $1 billion in 2018, ultimately selling over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, and its own line of OTC drugs. And, of course, this isn’t all.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What Amazon is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Providing telehealth services for its employees and later to other customers primarily in the U.S.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Using its supply chain to quickly deliver medications\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Using Alexa for chatbot-based medical services\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Amazon will make further use of its vast knowledge of online shopping trends and behaviour and will keep on providing what people need, from medicine to wearables. It might encounter some difficulties in areas they know less; but as it is already active in the most profitable segment of medicine (pharma manufacturing and sales), it can maintain its profitability. Not to mention another health tool: Apple \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statista.com\u002Fstatistics\u002F524830\u002Fglobal-smartwatch-vendors-market-share\u002F\">holds the largest share\u003C\u002Fa> of the global smartwatch shipment market. In the first quarter of 2020, that accounted for a substantial 47.9% share of the market. The company has been heavily leveraging the popularity of its smartwatch for its healthcare plans.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Through Apple Watch, the company has built an excellent pathway to electronic health records, too. Apple’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsupport.apple.com\u002Fen-us\u002FHT203037\">Health app\u003C\u002Fa> aims to bridge patients and doctors, and all the data in-between. Users can share their health data collected by the Health app directly to EMRs, like Cerner, which is already supporting this feature. Seamlessly sharing patient healthcare data from an Apple device to an EMR and this being viewable by a doctor or caregiver represent a major step in facilitating digital health approaches.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What Apple is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Using the Apple Watch for consumer health and research\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Connecting the Apple Health app to selected third-party services\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Apple will keep on working on expanding the health features of its devices, Apple Watch and iPhones included. Even more, I think some of the new features introduced in the next iPhones will be more health- than tech-related! Apple-owned clinics? Even more: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2019\u002F11\u002F15\u002Fgoogle-tweaks-its-algorithm-to-change-search-results-wsj.html\">some say\u003C\u002Fa> it can even direct that will. And people sure want health: 7% of all Google searches (an astounding 70,000 per minute) is health-related around the world. The search giant has repeatedly successfully transferred its in-depth knowledge of algorithms in the field of medicine, particularly since it acquired DeepMind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After a successful pilot in supporting cancer research, Google put its A.I. and its cloud computing expertise to use in partnerships. May 2021 HCA Healthcare and Alphabet’s Google Cloud announced a collaboration to develop algorithms to mine insights in patient records from the provider to improve efficiency and patient outcomes; and also this year the giant introduced its dermatology app supporting skin cancer monitoring and diagnosis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google had some missteps along the way, too, from Google Glass to launching-relaunching, now shutting down again its Google Health branch. But don’t give up on Google in healthcare: if the company want in, it will be in.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What Google\u002FAlphabet is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Scrapping Google Health and giving more space to small-scale projects with more autonomy\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Improving A.I. for medical and research purposes with DeepMind\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Investing into a ton of startups and directions through Verily and GV\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Through its investment funds GV and Gradient Ventures, Google is successfully keeping its fingers on the pulse of healthcare-related startups and ideas. It keeps being a driving force behind health- and A.I.-related investments. Google sure learned how \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=QfQ2r0zvyoA\">information is everything\u003C\u002Fa>, and already built an empire on top. Throughout 2020, the company strengthened its healthcare-related partnerships with organisations and research institutes. By delivering its computing know-how and the fact that most medical professionals are familiar with the way Microsoft’s computers are built and operate, the tech giant only needs to keep being good at what it already knows.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Last October, Microsoft launched Cloud for Healthcare, a new, healthcare-centric cloud. It integrates the company’s existing services like Microsoft Teams, Azure IoT and its Healthcare Bot. These tools aim to assist with collaboration among staff and carry out telemedicine consultations. In April 2021 Microsoft acquired A.I.-powered speech-technology company, Nuance. The company’s software can listen and transcribe doctor-patient conversations into organized medical notes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What Microsoft is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Cloud computing\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Health IT services (doesn&#8217;t sound sexy, but it makes healthcare work)\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>For me Microsoft is just like a liked uncle in the family: you can always count on him showing up at family gatherings, bringing flowers and a set of old jokes. Microsoft might not be a forerunner in healthcare, but what it promises, the company will surely deliver. But in recent years, its glory in innovation has faded. The company tried to build a stronghold in artificial intelligence with Watson, but the program is currently scrapped, as “\u003Cem>physicians were hesitant to adopt artificial intelligence.\u003C\u002Fem>” So after having spent years developing the branch and having invested considerable resources into it, IBM abandoning these efforts altogether comes as a surprise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In quantum computing, IBM took the lead but is in a tight race with other tech giants like Google. IBM is also trying to stay on board with being at the forefront of the use of blockchain in a medical setting, co-operating for example with Moderna, and having enterprise-level customers like the State of New York for a blockchain-secured health certificate app.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What IBM is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Trying to rebrand IBM Watson as a healthcare A.I.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Seeing the future in quantum computing\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>IBM seems to be keeping a straightforward path with the eyes on the prize. The company does not attempt to enter fields it lacks the knowledge on, which I consider a good (and financially stable) thing. Once again, I don’t expect to have IBM hospitals or clinics, but healthcare institutions, using all IBM has to offer in federated learning, blockchain and quantum computing. The processor unit manufacturer launched its A.I. platform, Clara in 2018, designed to augment medical imaging and genomics. It followed up a year later with a toolkit for radiologists, Clara A.I., to help with the classification of images. In 2019, the tech giant also started to explore federated learning in healthcare, the privacy-focused A.I. training method.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>NVIDIA, too, thought speech recognition technology would grow in importance in the future. Their software can help transcribe and better organise information from telemedicine visits. But probably their most important added value in healthcare will be the Cambridge-1 supercomputer the company is building in the UK. The UK’s most powerful supercomputer will aid in A.I. research in healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What NVIDIA is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Using its supercomputers and chips to improve drug design, genomics research and chatbots, among others\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>NVIDIA seems incredibly focused in its approach towards healthcare. The company uses its strengths in data, machine learning and hardware manufacturing, and builds these all into its vision for healthcare, which is efficient, fast and entirely high-tech. Honestly, I can share their enthusiasm. Their weight, level of involvement, size of investment and even their approach vary, but they all make waves in healthcare. Google hasn’t been particularly shy at expressing these ambitions: it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgoogles-acquisition-of-fitbit-boon-or-doom-for-the-fitness-tracking-industry\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">purchased Fitbit for $2.1 billion\u003C\u002Fa> and has a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdeepmind.com\u002Fblog\u002Fannouncements\u002Fdeepmind-health-joins-google-health\" target=\"_blank\">dedicated healthcare offshoot\u003C\u002Fa> from its AI branch, Deepmind. It is also the first company that publicly announced the development of a dedicated healthcare-specified AI model, called Med-PaLM. And as the variety of listed solutions on the \u003Ca rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealth.google\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Google Health page\u003C\u002Fa> shows, the company has something to offer to everyone, from patients and caregivers to communities, and researchers.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this series exploring the latest moves by tech giants into healthcare, we recently analysed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Famazon-in-healthcare-disruption-data-nightmares-and-digital-health-dreams\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon\u003C\u002Fa> and provided insights into the trends they are adopting. For now, let’s turn our focus on Google’s plan for the future of healthcare. Of note, we will treat Google, Alphabet, and Verily under the same umbrella. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI here, AI there, AI everywhere\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google is probably best known for the algorithmic prowess of its search engine. But since it acquired DeepMind, it has intended to expand this expertise elsewhere, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdeepmind.com\u002Fblog\u002Fannouncements\u002Fdeepmind-health-joins-google-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including healthcare\u003C\u002Fa>. And its efforts are showing promise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In August 2020, they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fai.googleblog.com\u002F2020\u002F08\u002Fusing-machine-learning-to-detect.html\" target=\"_blank\">introduced C2D2\u003C\u002Fa>, a machine learning-based approach to improving colonoscopy screening. In the ensuing months, Google further put its AI as well as cloud computing expertise to use in new partnerships. In 2021, HCA Healthcare and Alphabet’s Google Cloud \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2021\u002F05\u002F26\u002Fjim-cramer-googles-new-health-care-venture-is-reason-to-buy-alphabet.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced a collaboration\u003C\u002Fa> to develop algorithms to mine insights into patient records from the provider to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Also launched in 2020, Google&#8217;s mammography AI system starts bringing in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fgoogle-health-expands-ai-powered-breast-cancer-screenings-integration\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tangible results\u003C\u002Fa> by now. Recent studies show that using AI to support radiologists in breast cancer screening \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fai-can-conduct-breast-cancer-screenings-in-less-time-than-humans-but-just-as-well-study-finds\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">can significantly reduce screen reading workload\u003C\u002Fa> with comparable cancer detection efficiency as standard double-reading.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But of course, in 2023 all eyes are on \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgenerative-ai-explained-its-impact-and-future-in-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\">generative AI\u003C\u002Fa>. But it also raises privacy concerns over the handling of such data.
