As it’s an awfully difficult job, we collected examples where\ndigital health technology could help and in which areas should analog methods\nprevail. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The land where kindergarteners play with the texture\nof raspberry\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When was the last time you paid attention to the\ncrunching sounds while eating a raw carrot? Have you ever listened to it? What\nabout feeling the texture of dough or the scent of squashed blueberries? That’s\nexactly what kindergarteners in Finland are encouraged to do in the framework\nof a lifestyle program called SAPERE supported by the government of the\nScandinavian country. Instead of telling children ‘not to play with your food’,\nthey are encouraged to experiment with lemons, get their hands dirty in a bowl\nfull of flour, or pick apples from the kindergarten’s vegetable garden.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Apparently, it helps kids to get to know and eat more berries, vegetables, and fruits – all the food items that small children tend to disregard in favor of gums, candies, or dinosaur-shaped chocolate bars. As a consequence, they learn at a very early age that eating healthy stuff can also be fun not just obeying a parental command. \u003Cstrong>This sensory-based food education given to 3–5-year-old children in the kindergarten increases their willingness to choose vegetables, berries, and fruit, according to a study from the University of Eastern Finland. The research also states that positive and personal food-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help modify dietary preferences in a direction that is beneficial for health. Dietary preferences learned in early childhood often stick with a person all the way to adolescence and adulthood.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2019\u002F06\u002FSensory-Based-Food-Education-512x341.jpg\" alt=\"digital health literacy\" class=\"wp-image-24102\"\u002F>\u003Cfigcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: www.goodtoknow.co.uk\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Diabetes\nMonster and healthy attitudes toward food at an early age\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sapere-association.com\u002Fabout-us\u002Fsapere-members\u002Fsapere-in-finland\">SAPERE method was so successful in Finland\u003C\u002Fa> that it was included in the program of every single Finnish kindergarten since then, and some European cities and countries also started to experiment with the program. \u003Cstrong>Why do the Scandinavians allow their little ones to play with food? They believe they can reduce their share of the alarming global obesity epidemic among young children, and prepare them for a healthier adulthood. Namely, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fdietphysicalactivity\u002Fchildhood\u002Fen\u002F\">the WHO estimated in 2016\u003C\u002Fa> that the number of overweight children under the age of five was over 41 million. Almost half of all overweight children under 5 lived in Asia and one quarter lived in Africa\u003C\u002Fstrong>. According to the CDC, data from 2015-2016 show that nearly 1 in 5 school age children and young people (6 to 19 years) in the United States is obese; and the percentage has almost tripled since the 1970s.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although child obesity has its roots in many problems: genetic factors, metabolism, specific eating and physical behavior, short sleep duration, negative childhood events, the impact of the environment, there are several ways how to improve those bleak numbers and prevent diseases like diabetes or cardiovascular conditions in an earlier age. The Finnish SAPERE method is one of them for how to teach a healthy attitude towards a wide range of food items and encourage children to have a diverse diet where sweets, pizza, and spaghetti are balanced out through vegetables. A similar app from Medtronic uses an animal avatar called \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.lenny-diabetes.com\u002F\">Lenny the Lion\u003C\u002Fa> to teach kids with diabetes about carb counting, while \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fayogo.com\u002Fblog\u002Fmonster-manor\u002F\">Ayogo deployed Monster Manor\u003C\u002Fa> for similar purposes. The Austrian-based mySugr developed the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fassets.mysugr.com\u002Fwebsite\u002Fmysugr.com-wordpress\u002Fuploads\u002F2016\u002F02\u002FmySugr-Press-Release-Junior-US-Launch_June-7-2013_Jun_7.pdf\">mySugr Junior\u003C\u002Fa> for children aged 6-10 to help them manage their condition with the help of the diabetes monster.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Donation\nto charities through step count and fighting inactivity with gamification\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, not only food and eating should be on the radar of health-conscious parents. Physical activity is key to the fight against obesity and a variety of childhood diseases. While the WHO recommends 60 minutes of regular, moderate to vigorous-intensity activity every week, a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fmmwr\u002Fpreview\u002Fmmwrhtml\u002Fss6104a1.htm\">youth risk survey across the United States from 2011 showed that\u003C\u002Fa> 13.8 percent of students had not participated in any kind of physical activity that increased their heart rate on at least 1 day during the 7 days before the survey. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gov.uk\u002Fgovernment\u002Fnews\u002Fnumber-of-children-getting-enough-physical-activity-drops-by-40\">Another survey from the UK even showed\u003C\u002Fa> that the number of children meeting the recommended amount of physical activity for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight drops by 40 percent as they move through primary school.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>From \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhealth-trackers-are-changing-the-experience-of-pregnancy\u002F\">sensors during pregnancy through baby monitors\u003C\u002Fa> until fitness trackers for kids, the scale of digital health devices for the family is widening. Several digital health techniques exist to help reduce these statistics and encourage kids to move more. For example, raising a health-focused and fit child is easier through gamification\u003C\u002Fstrong>. If you tell a kid to go out of the house and leave the video games because that’s healthy, you can be sure as a parent that it won’t happen. Leapband, Zamzee, or \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbuy.garmin.com\u002Fen-AU\u002FAU\u002Fwearabletech\u002Fwatches-wearable-technology\u002Fvivofit-jr-\u002Fprod544984.html\">Vivofit jr.\u003C\u002Fa>, for example, encourages kids to stay on the move\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The latter tracks steps, sleep and 60 minutes of daily recommended activity. Kids are able to earn coins to redeem for agreed-upon rewards, while parents can monitor the kiddos’ steps and active minutes, assign chores and even hand out those virtual rewards. In the case of Zamzee, kids can cash in their “Pointz” even for donations to a charity, which is apparently a popular choice. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002F20087\u002Fhow-digital-health-tools-help-kids-form-better-habits\">HopeLab released an efficacy study which showed\u003C\u002Fa> Zamzee got kids to move 59 percent more than non-users over a six-month period.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Emotional, cognitive health and meditation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As in the case of adults, it is also not enough for children just to get the appropriate amount of food, enough sleep and physical activity for being healthy. Physical health greatly corresponds to mental as well as cognitive health, and unfortunately, statistics show that the youngest generation is plagued by mental health troubles. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fchildrensmentalhealth\u002Fdata.html\">CDC says\u003C\u002Fa> that only in the U.S. 9.4 percent of children have received an ADHD diagnosis, 7.4 percent have a behavior problem, while 7.1 percent fight anxiety and 3.2 percent have been diagnosed with depression.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Researchers also found that trends show an increase in mental health troubles among kids – and that might also have something to do with screen time as well as the use of the latest technologies in general\u003C\u002Fstrong>. A \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedirect.com\u002Fscience\u002Farticle\u002Fpii\u002FS2211335518301827\">study\u003C\u002Fa> published in the journal \u003Cem>Preventive Medicine Reports\u003C\u002Fem> found that young people who spend seven hours or more a day on screens are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety than those who use screens for an hour a day. For example, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.educationalappstore.com\u002Fapp\u002Fmindshift\">MindShift\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> app aims to help young adults cope\nwith anxiety, by acting as a portable coach that guides users through\nchallenging situations. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.educationalappstore.com\u002Fapp\u002Fbreathe-think-do-with-sesame\">Breathe,\nThink, and Do\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>\nwith Sesame is another app that helps kids learn to deal with frustrating\nsituations using the &#8220;breathe, think, do&#8221; method. Regarding cognitive\ngames, we can recommend \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.lumosity.com\u002F\">Lumosity\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.elevateapp.com\u002F\">Elevate\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.peak.net\u002F\">Peak\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>,\nor \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cognifit.com\u002F\">CogniFit\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>, which all improve brain activity\nthrough engaging games and show kids that there’s more out there than killing\nzombies. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On\na more institutional level, some schools are experimenting with meditation. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.abc.net.au\u002Fnews\u002F2019-06-03\u002Fmeditation-hailed-as-important-tool-for-helping-kids-with-stress\u002F11168336\">Teachers\nat Brighton State School on Brisbane&#8217;s bayside are among a growing number of\neducators\u003C\u002Fa> embedding meditation into their daily lesson plans to\nhelp children deal with their emotions and improve focus and behavior. That\nsounds like a practice to be followed in the future!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Preparing kids for medical emergencies\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Medical education is also an important aspect of\nchildren’s health. It is very useful to teach kids early about bacteria,\ndiseases, allergies, or even medical emergencies. The Medical Futurist team\nloved the French animation\u003Cem>, Il était un fois… la vie\n(1986). \u003C\u002Fem>It was fascinating\nhow the creators talked about the human body as a construction where tiny cars\nfloated through human veins, grab-cranes worked on teeth and bacteria as tiny\nmonsters tried to attack innocent screaming lady-cells, while white blood cells\ndefended the body as well-trained soldiers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>That’s a way kids also understand and find entertaining – and that’s what digital health technologies also employ. The American Red Cross developed an \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.redcross.org\u002Fmonsterguard\">app called Monster Guard\u003C\u002Fa> focused on helping prepare children for emergencies\u003C\u002Fstrong>. It teaches kids through “Monster Guard Academy” how to prepare and stay safe during home fires, hurricanes, floods or other disasters, and they get points and medals for completing tasks. \u003Cstrong>The Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC) produced a very innovative and challenging project called “\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.emergency-live.com\u002Fit\u002Fnews\u002Ftraining-cpr-virtuale-ecco-come-diventare-eroi-nella-realta\u002F\">VR CPR\u003C\u002Fa>”.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The aim of this project is to create a full self-directed learning platform for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training in VR. We believe that every child might get the results of their genome sequencing as early as the day after they are born – but parents will have the responsibility to hand it over to them when they believe that it is time for it\u003C\u002Fstrong>. As genetics will get more and more significant in the coming years, parents might consider having a conversation about genetics and genomics with their kids. We know that the appearance of cheap direct-to-consumer genetic testing brought with it an era when anyone can have their ancestry test in weeks and that might \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnypost.com\u002F2018\u002F08\u002F11\u002Fancestry-tests-are-revealing-shocking-family-secrets\u002F\">create awkward situations within families\u003C\u002Fa>, but as that option will not vanish anytime soon, isn’t it wiser to tell your kids the truth early enough? It teaches them how to count, how to create stories together (!), remember colors and more. They can sing or play games and they also have amazingly bad word-wits. I believe it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Who are the millennials?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Millennials are born between 1980 and 2000, they have grown up in a time of rapid change ranging from the fall of the Berlin Wall, through the spread of globalised economy represented by the shared service centers in Bangalore to the rise and fall of the VHS, mix tapes, MSN messenger, MyVip or the shine and disappearance of the Spice Girls or the Backstreet Boys. They are the first digital natives to explain to grandma how Facebook and Snapchat work, streaming movies online or buying products from China on sale without any second thought. Not to mention how&nbsp;connected and social they are, knowing bits and pieces of information mainly from online channels. Reading the printed paper on the way to work? Rather listening to the latest podcast on the subway.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Millennials have an extremely different life experience from that of their parents so far which gives them an extremely different worldview than that of their parents, not speaking about their grandparents. Marriage at 20? No way! Buying a car? What for? And it changed for the better. For Millennials, healthy does not only mean ‘not sick’. Wellness became a daily pursuit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Attitudes toward smoking or (in a less visible extent but also in the case of) drinking changed in the last decades. According to Goldman Sachs, 69 per cent of 12\u003Csup>th\u003C\u002Fsup> graders disapproved in 1998 if an adult smoked one or more packs of cigarettes a day. In 2013, this percentage increased to 83 per cent. \u003Cstrong>It is generally visible that they are exercising more, eating smarter and smoking less than previous generations\u003C\u002Fstrong>. When I was 17 years old, my passion was playing football and not working in an internship program together on digital health issues. However, Krisztina’s generation is different, and she was eager to get me familiarized with it. As we engaged more and more in the internship program, we figured we would both like to know more about the millennials. So we put together an online questionnaire about health attitudes among her peers. We wanted to give a voice to a group of young people in their 20s as diverse as possible, so we tried to truly reach beyond our Central European means.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As our basic idea was to ask about the health preferences of millennials, and Krisztina asked first of all her peers, the age group reflects somewhat also her wider network. The average age is 21.3 years. Millennials think they are healthy.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the questionnaire consisting of 12 questions, millennials generally believe they are healthy. For the very first question (\u003Cem>How healthy do you consider yourself?\u003C\u002Fem>), respondents scored a 3.5 meaning they rather consider themselves fit and sound than not. Here, they had to score their health subjectively on a scale from 1 to 5, where five means super healthy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In line with their own evaluation, our general impression based on the questionnaire was that millennials consider themselves healthy, while they are not crazy about it: most of them are not on a strict diet, their phones are not only about MyFitnessPal, Fitbit or other health apps. The respondents to our questionnaire seemed to be fairly open to trying new digital health gadgets such as sensors. Some of them are already active users of various smartphone health apps. Obviously, the key is the level of attention to health issues. But the difference is still striking if we consider that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fitbit.com\u002Feu\">Fitbit\u003C\u002Fa>, which TMF considers the best fitness tracker on the market, is almost half as known as the Apple Watch. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbuy.garmin.com\u002Fen-US\u002FUS\u002Fc10002-p1.html\">Garmin\u003C\u002Fa>, the company selling multisport GPS watches and activity trackers, came in as third in our list.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The fourth place – significantly lagging behind &#8211; is occupied by Jawbone’s stylish activity and sleep trackers, followed by Pebble Time, the most multi-faceted sleep tracker developed so far. We are fully in agreement! Or here goes another: \u003Cem>incentives should be built in to medical insurance\u003C\u002Fem>. But our favorite was the one who said that \u003Cem>it will not matter how much technology there is, if the person is not willing to change his or her habits\u003C\u002Fem>. It&#8217;s currently assigned to fitness enthusiasts and marathon runners. But disruptive technologies have the potential to change this. When people buy health trackers, they expect the tracker to make the change for them. Whereas I think technology cannot change our lifestyle, we can change it motivated by data that we measure with good technologies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Whenever someone receives immediate feedback about anything related to their health, it becomes a significant motivation.
