As such, it should come as no surprise that I bring you yet another sleep tracker review, this time the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.usa.philips.com\u002Fc-e\u002Fsmartsleep.html\">SmartSleep from Philips\u003C\u002Fa>. While it’s absolutely a bummer on the design front, the “sleep enhancing” headband can be quite accurate and helpful&nbsp;&#8211; if you can get used to wearing it when going to bed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Shrek instead of Sleeping Beauty\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The multinational technology company Philips needs no introduction, but its SmartSleep product line might. It includes upcoming apps to analyze sleep or devices like the SmartSleep \u003Cg class=\"gr_ gr_81 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"81\" data-gr-id=\"81\">headband,\u003C\u002Fg> while aiming at helping you “unleash the power of your sleep.&#8221;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The latter intends to improve the quality of deep sleep for those individuals whose hectic lifestyle impedes their sleep quality, leaving them feeling not fully revitalized the next morning. The company also makes it clear that it is not intended for people with sleep disorders, people above their 50s or those with hearing impairment unable to hear 80 dBs. If you are eligible to operate this exclusive-sounding piece of tech, then you can consider investing in this $400 device.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, \u003Cstrong>do bear in mind that it will not help you win any beauty contest while being worn, as my wife can surely attest. When I first wore it (and on any subsequent occasions for that matter), she just couldn’t help laughing, and while I felt somewhat embarrassed, I couldn’t blame her. From a design perspective, the SmartSleep headband is divisive at best; wrapping around your forehead with a blinking green light (which eventually switches off) might sound science-fiction-ish, but it’s just not my taste\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Moreover, the prospect of wearing it the whole night to track your sleep is uninviting. Especially if you add that it only leaves you to rest on your back. That was quite unpleasant for me as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=y_i6S81vJ6U\">I’m not Sheldon Cooper\u003C\u002Fa>, so I practically never do that. But alas! As a reviewer, I had to take up the challenge.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2019\u002F03\u002F50596832_2251334758520394_7972436281881788416_n-384x512.jpg\" alt=\"Philips Sleep sensor\" class=\"wp-image-23245\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Long-haired at a disadvantage\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Getting started with the SmartSleep headband is fairly easy. As with most health trackers, it has to pair up via Bluetooth with its smartphone companion app for you to set up an account and analyze the data in the morning. Thankfully, it doesn’t require a constant connection during the whole night, and it’s only needed for the first-time pairing and subsequent sleep analysis once you wake up. However, to synchronize and output your data once you wake up, the app requires an internet connection, which I found to be unnecessary since other sleep trackers can give your sleep analysis result without an internet connection and synchronize with the cloud later. Philips can hopefully address this issue in the future with an app update.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Once you set up your account and paired the device, you can start tracking right away. It’s a strange process at the beginning, but you’ll get used to it after the first few uses. First, stick the replaceable sensor behind your right ear, then pull the headband over your forehead and connect the dangling SmartSleep connector to the sensor\u003C\u002Fstrong>. For short-haired people like me, it shouldn’t be a problem, but for the longer-haired among you, it might be a hassle to get your hair out the way of the sensor and adjusting the headband.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Afterward, you should adjust the embedded speakers so that they are over your ear (more on their importance later). Finally, switch on the device by pressing the power button and confirm that the headband and sensors are connected with its beep (which eventually fades away after a few seconds). You see, if you are used to sleeping on your side (like me) or on your stomach, the headband’s speakers will be in the way, pressing on your ears. The best is to sleep on your back.\u003Cstrong> However, if you are not used to sleeping in this position, then you will most likely have to adopt it when using this device. It is quite an understatement that my first time wearing it was challenging, and I can imagine that it will be the same for a lot of users.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When you wake up, you can finally detach the connector, free your head from the headband and reseal the sensor in its package (they can be reused up to 3 times). \u003Cstrong>To end your sleep session, you will have to plug in the headband, which is another step I consider redundant.\u003C\u002Fstrong> My smartwatch’s integrated sleep tracker can automatically detect when I wake up without any action from my part, and I would expect a dedicated sleep-tracking device to at least be able to do that. Nevertheless, I did find the sleep tracking time to be very accurate, especially when compared to that of my smartwatch. With its smart sleep sensors, it detects when the user enters in\nslow-wave sleep and then begins to emit quiet audio tones that are not loud\nenough to wake you up but enhance those slow waves which then support a longer deep sleep period and help you feel more energized the next morning.\nThe embedded algorithm further customizes the timing and volume of tones\naccording to the user’s sleep pattern every night.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Once synched, \u003Cstrong>the SleepMapper companion app gives quite a detailed analysis of the user’s last night’s sleep. It accurately tells at what time you fell asleep, woke up, the number of awakenings you’ve had, how long you’ve slept in deep sleep and if you’ve had any deviations from your sleep routine\u003C\u002Fstrong> like the time of going to bed. More importantly, it shows you how much “Sleep Boost Time” you’ve gained, which is the amount of extra deep sleep time you’ve profited thanks to the device. I could see that I progressively increased my time due to Sleep Boosts. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Interestingly, the SleeMapper app \u003Cstrong>adds a gamifying aspect to its sleep analysis\u003C\u002Fstrong> by giving you extra points for the amount of sleep boosts you got and subtracting points if you’ve deviated from your sleep routine or spent more time awake. While the decision to purchase it ultimately depends on your budget and your needs to improve your deep sleep, there are some aspects to consider. For one, the app is solely used to analyze the data recorded on the headband. \u003Cstrong>There is no smart alarm integrated which could wake you up at the ideal time when paired with the SmartSleep’s accurate sleep tracking technology\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Understandably, that would require a constant Bluetooth connection, but there are much cheaper options like pairing an old Pebble Time smartwatch with the Sleep As Android app, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F6-months-sleep-tracking-experiment-learnt\">which I extensively tested and found to be very effective\u003C\u002Fa>. And for a $400 device, I would have expected to at least have this option.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Additionally, \u003Cstrong>the box comes with 30 reusable sensors, which, as mentioned before, can be used up to 3 times. Once your store of 30 sensors has been depleted after 90 days, you will need to invest in more.\u003C\u002Fstrong> These are priced at $30 for 30 replacement sensors, and while they are affordable, you will need to regularly stock up on these, and they can add up to be quite the investment in the long run.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A little bit nitpicky but \u003Cstrong>there is no carry case included with the purchase\u003C\u002Fstrong>. If you are a frequent traveler, then you most likely know the importance of good sleep and might want to bring with you a device you’ve invested in for that purpose. But Philips does not include a handy carry bag for travelers or just for storage along with the charger and the dozens of smart sensors it needs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2019\u002F03\u002FPhilips-pack-512x310.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23223\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, Philips is not the only company foraging in such types of “sleep-enhancing” devices. There is the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdreem.com\u002Fen?utm_source=dreemblog_boutonprincipal\">Dreem Band\u003C\u002Fa> from the San Francisco Bay Area-based company Dreem, which looks conspicuously very much like the SmartSleep and has similar features. You learn a lot about your habits and how they affect sleep quality. For example, what happens if you drink or eat anything before going to sleep? What if you exercise? And what about checking your social media newsfeed? It is different for everyone, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F6-months-sleep-tracking-experiment-learnt\u002F\">thus optimizing sleep is absolutely not easy\u003C\u002Fa>. It is due to the fact that built-in health apps started to reshape the way we think about our phones – we are getting more and more into the direction of having smart healthcare assistants in our hands – and the market of healthcare wearables and sensors started to boom &#8211; around a \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.wareable.com\u002Fwearable-tech\u002F245-million-wearable-devices-sold-2019-1606\">hundred million\u003C\u002Fa> wearable units were purchased to measure health parameters in 2015, while it is predicted that 245 million wearable devices will be sold in 2019. As a consequence, a lot of people are puzzled what to choose for their needs. Some ask me about using simple apps for tracking sleep while their phone is next to them. Others want to know which sensor to use for detailed tracking.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Thus, I decided to conduct a week-long experiment where I sleep with a different method of tracking every night, so you do not have to test every one of them and my advices might help you find the way out of the jungle of sleep trackers. The Urbandroid Team behind developing the app says that your phone should be about 30-40 cm away from you, not in close contact. However, it is different when your phone is able to use the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fsonar.urbandroid.org\u002F\">Sonar\u003C\u002Fa>;&nbsp;which&nbsp;utilizes the speaker and microphone available in every smartphone to produce ultrasonic signals. It is mind-blowing that Sleep as Android is able to detect the small discrepancies between emitted and received signals created by movements during sleep. Unfortunately, not every phone is able to use it. So you might want to check out the placement tricks \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fsleep.urbandroid.org\u002Fdocumentation\u002Fcore\u002Fsleep-tracking\u002F#phone-placement\">here\u003C\u002Fa> depending on the capabilities of your smartphone.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Concerning the sleep tracking procedure, it is quite comfortable that using an app does not require any preparation. I just opened it, decided when to wake up and put it on my night table. Surprisingly, it measured my sleep cycles quite accurately, and as my phone is using the Sonar, it was in line with how I felt in the morning. Cheap, fast and simple method, although the biggest disadvantage was the lack of accurate smart alarm. Without the sensors, it is almost impossible for the app to find the best time when it should wake me up. I decided to use the Fitbit Surge smartwatch which I also use for fitness tracking. Not like usually, I just kept on using it during sleep and told the Fitbit app when I went to bed and when I want to wake up. Unfortunately, I got disappointing results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Not only the sleep analysis was useless but it did not wake me up so I see no reason why I had to set that time on the app. In Fitbit Surge’s defense, it is one of the greatest fitness activity trackers on the market. Still, I believe the company should consider concentrating on strengthening this side of the gadget, while letting the other, less well-developed features, such as the sleep sensor go (or improve that further).\u003Cstrong> Grade: D-\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What happened when I accompanied the sensor with an app? \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"alignleft\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2017\u002F03\u002FScreenshot_2017-03-16-10-37-41-352x512.png\" alt=\"Sleep as Android - Sleep Tracking\" class=\"wp-image-15264\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I used my jackpot combination for this: the Sleep as Android app paired with the Pebble Time smartwatch. This is a combination that has been working for me for 2 years. What matters here is that the app is the primary source of algorithms, it is the brain here. The sensor is just measuring my movements. For this task, I use the Pebble Time because it is supported by the app and its battery time is amazing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The tracker, developed in collaboration with researchers at Stanford University, measures your sleep, when you go to bed, displays sleep, deep-sleep, and the times when you fall asleep and wake up. Pebble Time is small, easy-to-use and very useful. It has hundreds of other different applications as well. Late November 2016, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fventurebeat.com\u002F2016\u002F11\u002F30\u002Ffitbit-is-buying-pebble-for-34-40-million\u002F\">Fitbit has acquired\u003C\u002Fa> Pebble, and I was sorry to hear it will stop developing the product. Moreover, since the transaction happened, my tracker unpairs with my phone randomly which is very disturbing. Still, the app measured detailed sleep quality and the Pebble could wake me up at the best possible time in the morning. Pure joy as my day started the best way possible. \u003Cstrong>Grade: A+\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh1>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How does a sensor and its own app function as a combo for detailed sleep tracking?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For this experiment, I chose the Viatom O2 sensor and its accompanying app. I recently reviewed the Viatom O2 Sleep Monitor; and&nbsp;I found it quite useful for measuring heart rate and blood oxygen levels. It is especially useful for people with sleep apnea and snoring; as it buzzes gently if their blood oxygen level is too low during the night, and they should switch their sleeping positions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So, I put on the smartwatch-like device and connected it to a sensor, which is a ring-like soft, comfortable and small device. Setting it up was not super easy but I managed to do it. Its clear advantage is that the O2 is able to see blood oxygen saturation which is really useful when diagnosing sleep apnea. Its biggest disadvantage is that there is no smart alarm. It is a one huge leap towards the all-mighty medical tricorder. It functions as a health tracker (just like a wearable sensor), it records your electrocardiogram (electrophysiology of your heart), measures your blood oxygen saturation, the number of steps you take a day, serves as a thermometer, a blood pressure tracker, sleep monitor and a reminder. It’s quite an all-in-one package. So, I decided to test its sleep tracking abilities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I put the device into a big pocket that had to be strapped to my forearm. I attached a pulseoxymeter sensor to the device and put my index finger into it, then I went to sleep. Its advantage is clearly the chance to measure vital signs in details. It might be even more accurate about oxygen saturation than the O2 Sleep Monitor. Its clear weakness is that it has to be fully charged before going to bed. Also, you have to go to bed with a huge device turning you into an unearthly person having a cyborg-arm.
