But believe it or not, we never had a smart ring &#8211; until now. Now, we&#8217;ve added a new trophy to that list. It is to ensure the ideal fit. Once the size is chosen, RingConn sends over the actual ring, and your health-tracking adventure begins. Our chief medical futurist, Dr. Meskó, chose size 11 after trying out several sizes, and according to him “it made him feel a bit like Frodo picking out his perfect ring size”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What’s in the box?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Upon unboxing, you will find the smart ring, a charging case, a charging station, and charging cables. But that’s not all! The ring comes with a portable charging case, which can fully charge it up to 18 times, offering 150 days of battery life without access to electricity. That is quite something. The app provides detailed reports of your health data, which includes both a 24×7 continuous measurement mode and a manual measurement mode, and there is no subscription fee.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The limitations\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Despite its commendable features, RingConn does have some limitations. Its screen-less design may not appeal to those who prefer real-time updates on their wearable. Users are reliant on the app for all data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>It delivers what it claims\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That said, RingConn delivers what it claims — a discreet, reliable health and fitness tracker. This has traditionally involved a combination of an inflatable arm cuff, a stethoscope and a mercury-based scale. For example, the light and portable \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftalkative-blood-pressure-monitor-ihealth-clear-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iHealth Clear\u003C\u002Fa> not only measures BP but also heart rate; and the companion app converts the raw data into digestible information packages.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Others like the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwithings-viatom-joint-review-2021\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Withings BPM Core and the Viatom Armfit+\u003C\u002Fa> integrate both a BP and ECG monitor into a single device. They can both pair with a companion smartphone app to store the collected data. This allows patients to further analyse or share the results; thereby enabling them to better manage their condition at home.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The next step in the evolution of BP monitors would be to trim them down further to the form factor of a common wrist-worn device.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Blood pressure readings from the wrist &#8211; a first glimpse at the future\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What was common with the aforementioned examples, whether analogue or digital, was that measurements were taken from the arm. MedTech company Omron presented something different when it announced the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fomron-heartguide-blood-pressure-smartwatch-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omron HeartGuide\u003C\u002Fa> in 2018.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The latter was a daring attempt at being the first-ever blood pressure smartwatch. When \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fomron-heartguide-blood-pressure-smartwatch-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we reviewed it\u003C\u002Fa>, we found it to be bulky, cumbersome and not really practical to use.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The accuracy of these early attempts was influenced by factors such as physical activity and body temperature. Calibration also needed to be performed regularly with a traditional blood pressure monitor to ensure accuracy.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Considering these pitfalls, this wrist-based approach didn’t really pick up steam; but that wasn’t the final form of blood pressure monitors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The cuff-less revolution and the future of BP monitoring\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Omron HeartGuide was only the first attempt at wrist-based BP monitors, and its issues were largely due to repurposing cuffs to fit into a smartwatch form factor. Newer approaches are more promising, especially with devices using photoplethysmography (PPG). PPG is a non-invasive optical technique that provides measurements based on changes in light intensity as a result of blood flow.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Adopting PPG sensors results in sleeker devices that are much more practical. They can further be more convenient as they can enable continuous, real-time BP readings; as opposed to one-off measurements at the doctor&#8217;s office.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffinally-a-good-wearable-blood-pressure-monitor-aktiia-bracelet-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Akita smart bracelet\u003C\u002Fa> is lightweight and designed to continuously monitor blood pressure throughout the day. Its readings \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs41440-023-01258-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have even been shown\u003C\u002Fa> to be comparable to traditional cuff-based BP monitors.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other PPG-based devices like the BioBeat smart patch aim to monitor BP without visibly doing so.
