And that the company would keep on focusing on health services with a keen interest in serving senior citizens.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Only a few days later, fitness company \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcrossfit-launch-fully-digital-primary-care-service\">\u003Cstrong>CrossFit declared\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> it would launch a fully digital primary care service in an attempt to provide an \u003Cem>“individualised approach to health\u003C\u002Fem>.” \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Tobacco company \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fafter-buying-health-company-vectura-tobacco-giant-philip-morris-will-profit-from-treating-the-illnesses-its-products-create-168564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Cstrong>Philip Morris showed\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> similar interest this summer by buying health firm Ventura claiming they are getting ready to create a “\u003Cem>smoke-free future.\u003C\u002Fem>” \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Have all these companies lost their minds?! Suddenly everyone that produces technology or has empty retail space wants to get into healthcare. It’s obvious that retailers and other industries don’t want to miss out on this lucrative segment of the economy. But will we be better off with or without them in medicine?\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>Let’s find it out.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Healthcare is indeed a money-making business. The global health industry \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpolicyadvice.net\u002Finsurance\u002Finsights\u002Fhealthcare-statistics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was worth $8.45 trillion\u003C\u002Fa> in 2018. Global healthcare spending could reach over \u003Cstrong>$10 trillion by 2022\u003C\u002Fstrong>. So it is clearly big business. But the thing is – it’s not a business. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Doing healthcare “right” is a complex and challenging task similar to taking off to the sunset on a galloping blind horse through a minefield. Due to regulations, the principles of evidence-based medicine and the huge responsibilities that come with developing healthcare solutions, it is so much more difficult than anyone would previously imagine. No wonder 150-year-old pharmaceutical companies with exceptionally skilled scientists and researchers sometimes have a hard time figuring out how to do it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At the same time, medicine is ripe for disruption, and tech companies have the ability, innovation and financial background to enter this industry – and even be successful in it.  This is why we extensively covered the journey of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Famazons-march-into-healthcare-a-2021-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fapple-in-healthcare-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgoogles-masterplan-for-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fmicrosoft-in-healthcare-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnvidia-in-healthcare-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NVIDIA\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fibm-in-healthcare-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IBM\u003C\u002Fa> into healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>But retail\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem> companies providing primary care service is something completely different than just selling certain healthcare products\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s as if your favourite cashier from Tesco could also test your blood. These companies (Best Buy, Walmart, CrossFit or, through the Oculus headset, Facebook and the others) wouldn’t just want to get a slice of the healthcare cake, and, say, offer accessibility to at-home lab tests or sell healthcare devices. They want to be a part of the solution. A part of healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What’s worrying is how these companies have never had experience with healthcare before. Everybody wants to provide healthcare services as if it was a simple technological matter. But this is very different from Big Tech dedicating billions of dollars to set up their own branch of healthcare-related businesses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Real-life examples of non-healthcare companies aiming to provide care\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.retaildive.com\u002Fnews\u002Fwalgreens-invests-1b-to-open-hundreds-of-primary-care-clinics\u002F581298\u002F\">Walgreens announced\u003C\u002Fa> in 2020 that it would open over 700 primary care clinics throughout the U.S. in the coming years, cooperating with VillageMD, having in-house doctors in the facilities instead of nurse practitioners.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pharmacy chain \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcaredive.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcvs-to-open-15k-healthhub-stores-in-next-2-years\u002F556128\u002F\">CVS Health aims to open\u003C\u002Fa> 1,500 HealthHub stores, in an attempt to make healthcare down to the local level; the chain already offers vaccinations and pharmacy-related matters, but also wants to provide primary care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhbr.org\u002F2019\u002F10\u002Fcan-big-box-retailers-provide-local-health-care\">Best Buy also builds\u003C\u002Fa> on its 125,000 employees. This non-clinical workforce would, according to news, provide healthcare and support while the company focuses on remote care solutions. In 2018 \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.indigo9digital.com\u002Fblog\u002Fretailtrendshealthcare\">Best Buy was said\u003C\u002Fa> to have spent over 1 billion USD on healthcare-related acquisitions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As early as this year, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcare.crossfit.com\u002F\">CrossFit Precision Care\u003C\u002Fa> is said to launch in the U.S. (and is said to have a global rollout after the U.S. launch).  CrossFit-trained doctors and health coaches will guide patients towards a healthier lifestyle, but at the same time offer primary care solutions through telemedicine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on all these, it is absolutely plausible that a few years from now, sitting in your car, with the push of a button you could ask for medical help; a dispatcher would then ask you to cough in the microphone, analyse your vocal biomarkers and connect you to a telemedicine service where you’d receive a few diagnostic solutions. What these companies don’t understand is that due to its sensitive nature, healthcare is a very special sector. You can’t just start providing primary care out of thin air. Even if you have amazing VR technology. There’s a complex regulatory system in place and a need for experience from qualified experts. You can’t just outsource telemedicine to a call centre at the other end of the world. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But why do companies like Best Buy or Crossfit think they could do so? Because for the man of the 21st century, healthcare looks almost like a purely technological question. These companies seriously believe that offering a technological solution is akin to providing quality healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cstrong>The thing is that if all we get from this healthcare-frenzy as patients and consumers is some more competition and innovation in medicine – we are all better off. However, it all turned out to be a scam on many accounts from faking demonstrations to using unreliable tech. This jeopardizes investments in the blood testing sector as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhere-does-blood-testing-stand-today\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">several other companies\u003C\u002Fa> are working on providing solutions with proven tech.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. There is a shift from investments in health IT to investments in digital health\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another example is that of Proteus. But in 2020, the company \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-ventures-that-flew-too-close-to-the-sun\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">filed for bankruptcy\u003C\u002Fa>. Even though some \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnorth-america\u002Fstudy-proteus-digital-pill-system-accurate-improved-adherence-among-california-tb\" target=\"_blank\">research backed its tech\u003C\u002Fa> to improve adherence, it was bad management that led to its eventual downfall. They couldn’t reach certain milestones within deadlines \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2020\u002F06\u002Fproteus-files-for-bankruptcy-where-did-it-falter\u002F?rf=1\" target=\"_blank\">under pressure from major investors\u003C\u002Fa>. The fallout is that other companies like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fetectrx.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">etectRx\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcordis.europa.eu\u002Farticle\u002Fid\u002F418365-pill-tracking-device-promises-targeted-personalised-care\" target=\"_blank\">SIGUEMED\u003C\u002Fa> working on similar solutions face a steeper slope in attracting investors from here on.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The direction of funding has pivoted from the pandemic-driven focus on on-demand healthcare services and life science research and development, which were prominent in 2021 and now, the emphasis is on digital health solutions that aid in disease treatment, streamline nonclinical operations, and manage complex health conditions like kidney disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mental health continues to be the leading area for clinical investment in digital health startups, with $0.9 billion allocated so far this year. Gary is the IT guy at your company. If there is an issue he alone can fix – like outdated antivirus software or malfunctioning electronic health records (EHR), then we’re talking about health IT. For instance, during the COVID-19 crisis, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mckinsey.com\u002Findustries\u002Fhealthcare-systems-and-services\u002Four-insights\u002Ftelehealth-a-quarter-trillion-dollar-post-covid-19-reality\" target=\"_blank\">McKinsey reports\u003C\u002Fa> that medical providers saw 50 to 175 times more patients via telehealth than they had done before. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Following this trend are companies that provide on-demand care like AliveCor, the company behind \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Flets-put-the-best-to-the-test-our-kardiamobile6l-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">portable ECGs\u003C\u002Fa>. In 2020, the company launched KardiaCare, a digital subscription service. It integrates its devices with personal results to offer ECG reviews by cardiologists, monthly summaries and a suite of other features to help users interpret their ECG data. Their KardiaMobile Card is a single-lead, FDA-cleared medical-grade pocket ECG that has the dimensions of a credit card that detects six types of arrhythmias. To date, the company has raised about $300 million in total venture funding.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Successful startups meet real-life patient or clinical needs\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Often in tech shows like CES you’ll come across \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-weirdest-digital-health-tech\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">silly products\u003C\u002Fa> like a blockchain toothbrush, or a  watch giving you electro-shocks. At other times you’ll come across startups like Magic Leap that make promising partnerships and and amass \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.crunchbase.com\u002Fnews\u002Fa-timeline-of-investor-interest-in-ar-startup-magic-leap-which-has-raised-2-3b\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">tons of funding\u003C\u002Fa> but \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffeatures\u002F2020-09-23\u002Fwhy-magic-leap-failed-ar-hype-exceeded-product-s-capabilities\" target=\"_blank\">don’t deliver on their promise\u003C\u002Fa>. Or even those like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fclinicloud-review-should-doctors-and-patients-use-the-digital-stethoscope\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">CliniCloud\u003C\u002Fa> that have a brilliant team and good tech but ultimately close shop. Such examples showed us that for startups to find success in digital health, their products must offer solutions to real clinical needs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For a technology to be successful, it should integrate into the practical reality of healthcare. For example, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mysugr.com\u002Fen\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">mySugr\u003C\u002Fa> helps diabetics reinterpret the condition as a “monster” that can be tamed through their app. Through motivating challenges, personalised insights and a scoring system, it encourages patients to “tame the monster” by keeping their glucose level at a desirable one. Pharma giant Roche even saw the potential in mySugr’s gamified approach and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.roche.com\u002Fmedia\u002Freleases\u002Fmed-cor-2017-06-30.htm\" target=\"_blank\">acquired the startup in 2017\u003C\u002Fa>.
