With over half of the world’s population \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ilo.org\u002Fglobal\u002Fabout-the-ilo\u002Fnewsroom\u002Fnews\u002FWCMS_675946\u002Flang--en\u002Findex.htm\" target=\"_blank\">lacking\u003C\u002Fa> access to essential healthcare, it is easy to sum up: we’re heading towards a healthcare crisis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity aligncenter\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sombre numbers from \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>The 2023 report of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) projects the total physician shortage in the U.S. of up to 124,000 physicians by 2034. \u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>As for Europe, &#8220;the health workforce crisis in Europe is no longer a looming threat – it is here and now&#8221; the World Health Organization \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Feurope\u002Fnews\u002Fitem\u002F22-03-2023-the-health-workforce-crisis-in-europe-is-no-longer-a-looming-threat---it-is-here-and-now.-the-bucharest-declaration-charts-a-way-forward\" target=\"_blank\">declared in 2023\u003C\u002Fa>.  \u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.oecd-ilibrary.org\u002Fsites\u002Fec8a199e-en\u002Findex.html?itemId=\u002Fcontent\u002Fcomponent\u002Fec8a199e-en\" target=\"_blank\">In Asia\u003C\u002Fa>, besides missing healthcare professionals from the health system, an uneven geographical distribution of health workers is a further obstacle.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>We see \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealthpolicy-watch.news\u002Feight-country-healthcare-workers-migration\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">increased healthcare worker migration to rich countries\u003C\u002Fa> &#8211; leaving the vulnerable &#8211; especially in Africa &#8211; even more so.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the 2023 \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fpublications\u002Fi\u002Fitem\u002F9789240069787\" target=\"_blank\">WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards list\u003C\u002Fa>, the situation is getting worse year after year. The latest list comprises 55 countries that face the most pressing health workforce challenges related to universal health coverage. This highly contributes to the increased need for medical professionals. In the U.S., the population aged 65 and over is projected to grow by 45.1% by 2033. On the other hand, active physicians are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Feurope\u002Fnews\u002Fitem\u002F14-09-2022-ticking-timebomb--without-immediate-action--health-and-care-workforce-gaps-in-the-european-region-could-spell-disaster\" target=\"_blank\">getting older in the developed world\u003C\u002Fa>, nurses are leaving their profession in great numbers.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Where numbers lead us\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\u003Cp>Based on the statistics, we can declare that there will always be a shortage of healthcare professionals globally\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There will always be fewer health workers trained than needed. As more and more people receive care and our diagnostic arsenal is improving, the number of people diagnosed with chronic diseases will keep on increasing. Similarly, as the number of areas providing advanced health care increases, the demand for skilled medical professionals will remain the same – or will grow.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A medical school bottleneck further augments the problem: medical schools receive far more applications they can and will facilitate. Later comes another obstacle: the lack of residency spaces. This is a global problem; and it comes as no surprise that the annual Match Day, organised by the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nrmp.org\u002Fabout\u002Fnews\u002F2023\u002F05\u002Fnrmp-releases-the-2023-main-residency-match-results-and-data-report-the-most-trusted-data-resource-for-the-main-residency-match\u002F?utm_source=search_results_page&amp;utm_campaign=nrmp_search_page&amp;utm_term=match%20results\" target=\"_blank\">National Resident Matching Program\u003C\u002Fa> in the United States, is celebrated throughout the country. This is the day when medical school students and graduates from the U.S. and worldwide learn which residency programs they can join in the States over the coming 3-7 years. In 2023, there were 43k+ active applicants for 37,425 places. The Action Plan is guided by five “core principles”:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>Use data to inform and drive decision-making in planning and investment.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Engage stakeholders through inclusive cross-sectorial dialogue.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Promote equity, ensuring the benefits reach the vulnerable and underserved.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Align investment and action with the needs of populations and health systems.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Remain country-led, empowering national governance and leadership\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Drawing conclusions\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the issues above combined, we need to get prepared for a new era in healthcare. On the upside, it means an ever-improving quality of care worldwide. It&#8217;s provided by widespread and common use of technology tools and devices in the hospital and at home. On the downside, there will be larger distances between doctors and patients and even nurses and patients. Here are the most important repercussions:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>We will not be able to talk to a doctor about every single health issue, neither live nor over the phone. (If you can do so today, praise the moment – this will change or be utterly expensive.) \u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n\u003Cli>AI-based chatbot systems and other algorithmic solutions will take over on triage and while waiting. In one of our latest database projects, we decided to venture into this territory and collect the companies that use artificial intelligence for this purpose. To add more value than what&#8217;s already available, our goal was not only to list these but also to determine their fields of operation, their target group and other, so far unmapped details.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The future is about speed and savings\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>New drugs are approved through human clinical trials: rigorous,\nyear-long procedures starting in animal trials and gradually moving to\npatients. They typically cost billions of dollars and take many years to\ncomplete, sometimes more than a decade. Plus, patients in trials are exposed to\nside effects that cannot be predicted or expected. And even if the trial is\nsuccessful, it has to go through a regulatory approval: it may or may not\nreceive the nod of the respective regulatory agency, e.g. the US Food and Drugs\nAdministration (FDA).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Luckily, there’s an abundance of technologies and companies that want to change the status quo. One way to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffuture-of-clinical-trials\" target=\"_blank\">modernise the drug testing process\u003C\u002Fa> is applying technologies to the traditional framework, for example, through online platforms to seek out participants; while an alternative way is to use \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwyss.harvard.edu\u002Ftechnology\u002Fhuman-organs-on-chips\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">human organs-on-chips\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fin-silico-trials-are-the-future\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">in silico trials\u003C\u002Fa>. It can also help understand the mechanisms of the disease, establish biomarkers, generate data, models, or novel drug candidates, design or redesign drugs, run preclinical experiments, design and run clinical trials, and even analyse the real-world experience\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The number of already existing AI companies in drug development reflects the manifold usage of the technology: they are many and increasing day by day. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nevertheless, we managed to choose our six favorites, so here you go!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) The company that mines clinical trials: \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.antidote.me\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Antidote\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>US and UK-based Antidote is focusing on matching patients and medical researchers in clinical trials so they could work together more easily. \u003Cstrong>The platform allows patients to find the most suitable clinical trials, helps researchers stream their latest study information to millions of patients, and even connects them with members of the medical community directly\u003C\u002Fstrong>. It’s basically a very efficient online platform for enhancing access to clinical trials.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By combining proprietary technologies, data, and well-established business models, the company is transforming the way patients and researchers connect so that breakthroughs can happen faster. It is pursuing internal drug discovery programs in cancer, dermatological diseases, fibrosis, Parkinson&#8217;s Disease, Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease, ALS, diabetes, sarcopenia, and ageing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company, working with researchers at the University of Toronto, \u003Cstrong>made headlines lately with the announcement that the process of developing a new drug candidate lasted just 46 days with the help of its smart algorithm\u003C\u002Fstrong>.
