Will future generations refer to these years as we refer today to the times of the Spanish Flu? Will we all be immunised in a global effort like we are against polio and get over the virus or will it live with us forever? But simply because foresight is “\u003Cem>not about predicting the future, it’s about minimising surprise\u003C\u002Fem>” (as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FKarl_Schroeder\" target=\"_blank\">Karl Schroeder\u003C\u002Fa> famously said), it is high time to encapsulate what we can expect for life in 2021 and beyond. Studies are ongoing with the jab aimed at kids between \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fd41586-021-01061-4\" target=\"_blank\">12-15\u003C\u002Fa> – and even \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fabcnews.go.com\u002FUS\u002Fchildren-young-months-now-covid-19-vaccine-trials\u002Fstory?id=77353416\" target=\"_blank\">younger\u003C\u002Fa>. BioNTech chief Uğur Şahin \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffortune.com\u002F2021\u002F04\u002F29\u002Fcovid-vaccines-kids-biontech-available-summer-june\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">announced\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Cem>“positive (but preliminary) trial results at the end of March, for children between the ages of 12 and 15.”\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Vaccinating pregnant and lactating women\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>Pregnant mothers are at more risk of developing severe symptoms from COVID-19, therefore it is even more important for them to get vaccinated. At the same time, lactating mothers pass \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.harvard.edu\u002Fgazette\u002Fstory\u002F2021\u002F03\u002Fstudy-shows-covid-19-vaccinated-mothers-pass-antibodies-to-newborns\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">antibodies to their newborns\u003C\u002Fa> after getting the jab.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Level and threshold of herd immunity\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews-room\u002Fq-a-detail\u002Fherd-immunity-lockdowns-and-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">Herd immunity\u003C\u002Fa> is reached when the spread of the disease becomes unlikely due to the high number of people vaccinated. There already are several good examples of countries reaching herd immunity, with the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhealth-56722186\" target=\"_blank\">state of Israel\u003C\u002Fa> being the most obvious. Almost 60% of its 9.3M population has already been vaccinated; while the islands of Seychelles also aim for the full vaccination of its less than 100.000 inhabitants. Leading pharma companies (like Pfizer of J&J) have \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2021\u002F04\u002F15\u002Fpfizer-ceo-says-third-covid-vaccine-dose-likely-needed-within-12-months.html\" target=\"_blank\">addressed the issue\u003C\u002Fa> stating that besides the third shot for full vaccination, there might have to be an annual repetition of the jab, just like the seasonal flu shots. Moreover, due to the slow vaccination progress, we can even expect new surges of the virus.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Masks and vaccines\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>We also don’t know what life will be like in highly vaccinated regions\u002Fareas – will we be able to live our lives without masks? We sure do hope so, and for the moment it seems \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fworld-us-canada-56908373\" target=\"_blank\">the CDC agrees\u003C\u002Fa>, at least outdoors.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Combined vaccines\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>We don’t know yet if it is possible \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nbcnews.com\u002Fhealth\u002Fhealth-news\u002Fpharmacists-say-pooling-covid-vaccines-could-save-thousands-doses-n1258149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to pool\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fd41586-021-00315-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">combine vaccines\u003C\u002Fa> with each other. And if there was an annual COVID shot, could it be incorporated in the seasonal flu vaccine? This is not a concept out of the blue as such combinations have been administered all over the world for half a century – like the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine you receive at age 1 and 6. How mRNA has complicated this issue is a question scientists need to provide an answer to.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Summing it up, here’s what I’m going to do – these will be my rules of thumb for the next months:\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>RULE No.1.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Not meeting people without a mask unless I know that they have received both doses of their vaccines.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>RULE No.2.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I will keep social distancing. If I can’t distance, I’m not going.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>RULE No.3.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Feeling social anxiety is OK. As we have changed our habits in a year of isolation, it will take time for them to recover as well.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>RULE No.4.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In all life situations, I will assume that everyone around me is unvaccinated until proven otherwise. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>This is the way we live by for the moment. Our entire social network has transformed to such depths that it will be a long time to assess its effects. The operation of entire industries has changed, and, of course, healthcare is no exception. And although we have heard of the digital transformation in medicine for years now, what exactly it covers remains unclear.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I have worked with over 30 different pharmaceutical companies over the past 15 years, giving 100+ keynote speeches around the world live and online. Each one of them explained how they want to transform a conventional company through an organisational course towards a digital switchover. They all say:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Col class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>“\u003Cem>We are a conservative company.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>“\u003Cem>We are going through an organisational journey\u002Fchange.”\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>“\u003Cem>We want to embrace digital transformation.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on these challenges, they often ask me to talk about the digital transformation and its direct impact on healthcare in my speeches. But I need to be honest: \u003Cstrong>I don’t know what they mean by it\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Let me explain why.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The healthcare industry is already using a gazillion of digital solutions. Medical professionals are actively using digital technologies, from mobile communications, telehealth solutions and digital analytics to chatbots and A.I. As such, medicine is going through a similar transformational journey as for example the banking sector did. My entire life is filled with technology, covering most facets of my life. I use technology, write about it, analyse reports and publish studies about it. I build my own PC and have been active on most digital channels for years. And still. Patient design means patient inclusion in key decision-making processes. Integrating A.I. in drug development saves time and money, while 3D printing leads to personalised medicine. Automation supplements the supply chain with more effective solutions, from manufacturing processes to pill dispersion. We pointed out some of the most important changes in healthcare for pharmaceutical companies in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftechnologies-shaping-the-future-of-pharma-e-book\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">this article\u003C\u002Fa> and in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fleanpub.com\u002Fthefutureofpharma\" target=\"_blank\">our e-book\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This still isn’t digital transformation – these are steps towards; and pharma leaders need to see these technologies and solutions as such.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And not all these changes are digital – they are logical. First of all, no change will come (but a bucketload of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-national-digital-health-transformations-fail\">money wasted\u003C\u002Fa>) unless it is preceded by a cultural transformation.
