Those belonging to the former camp tout it as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.washingtonpost.com\u002Farts-entertainment\u002F2021\u002F12\u002F18\u002Fnft-art-faq\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a novel approach to finance and own digital media\u003C\u002Fa>; while those against NFTs point to &#8211; among many other things- \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fnfts-hot-effect-earth-climate\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their devastating effects on the climate\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But beyond \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fcnn.com\u002Fstyle\u002Farticle\u002Fbeeple-first-nft-artwork-at-auction-sale-result\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">$69.3 million-worth NFT art\u003C\u002Fa> and relying on technology that consumes \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5947911\u002Fnft-environmental-toll\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">as much energy as a whole country\u003C\u002Fa>, NFTs represent a unique potential in the digital health age: that of patients, rather than companies, owning their own digital healthcare data. With such a level of ownership, patients could leverage its advantage to monetise their data rather than have companies profit off them, as has been traditionally the case.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given the novelty of NFTs, their untapped potential in healthcare might not be known, let alone what NFTs are and how they work. This article will walk you through the basics of NFTs, how they can further empower patients in the digital health age, as well as raise concerns pertinent to the technology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What is an NFT?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Crowning it as the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002Fstyle\u002Farticle\u002Fnft-word-of-the-year-collins-scli-intl-gbr\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">Word of the Year for 2021\u003C\u002Fa>, dictionary publisher Collins \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.collinsdictionary.com\u002Fdictionary\u002Fenglish\u002Fnft\" target=\"_blank\">defines a non-fungible token\u003C\u002Fa> as &#8220;\u003Cem>a unique digital certificate, registered in a blockchain, that is used to record ownership of an asset such as an artwork or a collectible\u003C\u002Fem>.&#8221; Creating or “mining” NFT transactions leverage blockchain technology, akin to what cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are based on. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In short, the technology relies on a decentralised network of computers employing advanced cryptography to verify the validity of a transaction. We previously explored the relevance of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-the-hell-is-blockchain-what-does-it-mean-for-healthcare-and-pharma\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">blockchain in healthcare and pharma\u003C\u002Fa>, where we highlighted its ability to secure sensitive medical data and curb counterfeit drugs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What The Hell Is Blockchain And What Does It Mean For Healthcare And Pharma? - The Medical Futurist\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FE1wcvcta6zw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Similar to how NFTs \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.washingtonpost.com\u002Farts-entertainment\u002F2021\u002F12\u002F18\u002Fnft-art-faq\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">have disrupted the art world\u003C\u002Fa>, they could positively disrupt the digital health landscape by giving patients unprecedented control over their medical information.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As we dive into the digital health era, personal health sensors and apps equip patients with personalised data so that they can become more proactive in managing their health. But what is still mostly the norm is that these sensitive data are governed by the companies providing these services; and they often profit out of it, oblivious to patients. For example, the pregnancy-tracking app Ovia was found to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.washingtonpost.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2019\u002F04\u002F10\u002Ftracking-your-pregnancy-an-app-may-be-more-public-than-you-think\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">sell aggregated data of its users\u003C\u002Fa> to employers. Similarly, 23andMe \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffeatures\u002F2021-11-04\u002F23andme-to-use-dna-tests-to-make-cancer-drugs\" target=\"_blank\">intends to develop drugs\u003C\u002Fa> based on the genetic database it amassed from customers who used its genetic testing kits, the latter might not even have been made explicitly aware of such potential use of their data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is simply not fair that private companies and institutions make money out of patient data in such a way. If the real paradigm change of digital health &#8211; that of empowering patients &#8211; takes place (and it does), the same should apply to monetising their health data, and NFTs could change the tides in this regard.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>NFT’s potentials in healthcare\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Say you’ve decided to order a direct-to-consumer DNA testing kit in order to have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnutrigenomics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a nutrition plan tailored to your genetic makeup\u003C\u002Fa> by a private company. You also know that the latter might sell your genetic data to third parties for research purposes. But you settle for the service anyway because it’s the most accurate way to get a personalised diet at a relatively affordable price.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, by selling your genetic data and that of others, the company could be making millions that they will never share with you. You would be able to see&nbsp;where it ends up, and hold those who used it without your permission accountable since you are the sole owner of the data, as certified by the NFT authentication. Moreover, the NFT owner \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F22310188\u002Fnft-explainer-what-is-blockchain-crypto-art-faq\" target=\"_blank\">can enable a feature to earn money\u003C\u002Fa> whenever a transaction occurs with the data.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the aforementioned examples of Ovia and 23andMe, patients whose data are being used by the companies aren’t earning a cent. But with an NFT approach, companies offering digital health services could encourage patients to participate in studies by contributing their data and earning from it. Other third parties interested in utilising the data for research or developing new products could reach out directly to patients on a digital marketplace. The main difference here compared to the traditional approach, is that patients really do have the choice to share their data in a more informed manner.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the underlying blockchain technology and an NFT certification, the use of patient data could thus be made more transparent and&nbsp;could equip patients with control over their health records.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>NFT in medicine: the future or fad?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While much about NFT in healthcare is still speculative at this point, there are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Finsider.fitt.co\u002Fcrypto-meets-healthcare-can-nfts-transform-patient-data-management\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">some startups that are exploring this potential\u003C\u002Fa>. One such company is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Faimedis.io\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Aimedis\u003C\u002Fa>, which has a medical NFT marketplace where patients can participate in transactions involving their health data. The \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fenjin.io\u002Fshowcase\u002Fhealth-hero\" target=\"_blank\">health monitoring app Go!\u003C\u002Fa>, developed by Enjin and Health Hero, can collect individual activity and wellness data from popular apps like Apple Health, Google Fit, and Fitbit. In doing so, it creates Well-being NFTs, or W-NFTs, imbued with the scarcity of the users’ health data assets. These can even be traded on the open market.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are several potential roadblocks to adopting the technology \u003Cem>en masse \u003C\u002Fem>in the near future, especially in healthcare. As it stands, blockchain technology \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pm360online.com\u002Fbeyond-trendy-investments-three-applications-of-nfts-in-healthcare-and-pharma-marketing\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">runs quite inefficiently\u003C\u002Fa>, with large amounts of energy required for minor transactions. This is further tied to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2021\u002F3\u002F15\u002F22328203\u002Fnft-cryptoart-ethereum-blockchain-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">significant greenhouse gas emissions\u003C\u002Fa>, which add to climate change. As such, NFTs might not be outright commercially viable in the near future. But \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcointelegraph.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftrue-or-false-a-single-nft-can-power-a-european-household-for-1-5-months\" target=\"_blank\">alternatives for NFT minting\u003C\u002Fa> are in the works that could use a fraction of the computing power currently involved in their transactions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Then there is the issue of whether companies offering digital health services will actually want to adopt the technology. They might not be particularly enticed by the idea of sharing their profits with patients, from whom they’ve traditionally been profiting off and not the other way round.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>All in all, even though NFTs are still in their infancy, the technology might evolve in the future to become more compelling for patients to favour the agency it provides over their data. As the importance of A.I. grows in modern medicine, there’s a huge need for data (\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdata-annotation\u002F\">as well as data annotation\u003C\u002Fa>) – the latter being one of the most important aspects of the work in building an algorithm. In healthcare, collecting data means utilising existing databases and using images, radiology results, samples, CT or MR scans, patient records and more. The more data you feed the system, the better the results can become.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Artificial intelligence has earned its place \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F7-things-you-can-expect-from-a-i-in-healthcare\u002F\">in multiple fields of medicine\u003C\u002Fa>, from recognising patterns, supporting diagnoses and setting up treatment pathways to optimising healthcare logistics. Smart algorithms can sift through large volumes of data no man can, deriving clear-cut trends from such analyses.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s easy to guess that this data includes your own health-related data: EMRs, smartwatches, genetic reports, wearables and so on are all means to feed the A.I. with datasets.\u003Cstrong> But what if we would never be able to obtain enough data to contribute to the progress of A.I. in healthcare?\u003C\u002Fstrong>&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What if privacy concerns don’t allow hospitals to share medical records with companies?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>That’s when synthetic data comes in.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is synthetic data fake?\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is fake but it’s based on real-life data. Moreover, it’s possible to use methods that ensure that synthetic data very much resembles the real one. One of these methods is called generative adversarial network (GAN).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s imagine there’s a painter who wants to create better and better copies of Picasso’s paintings to sell them as real ones. On the other end, there’s a policeman who wants to catch him by spotting these fake Picasso paintings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By painting more and more of the fake ones, the painter is getting gradually better and better at creating fakes. At the same time, while going after him, the detective is also getting better at recognising those works of art that are replicas. They both keep trying to beat each other and, after many iterations, the painter creates images indistinguishable from a real Picasso. This was the goal of the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FGenerative_adversarial_network\">whole experiment\u003C\u002Fa> with machine learning.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And this is exactly how A.I. can create synthetic photos of birthmarks (or in fact anything else) to ensure the algorithm’s development – in the case of birthmarks, to be able to better detect melanoma or other skin issues. Based on existing data, the algorithm attempts to generate data that is somewhat different from the original, but not so much as to lead to a false result. Without patient data, there is no A.I. in healthcare. On one hand, the amount of data needed for effective algorithms in healthcare is crucial as a huge amount of data is needed to feed the algorithms. On the other hand, data needs to be annotated, drawing lines around tumours, pinpointing cells or designating ECG rhythm strips – that’s why the altruistic role of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdata-annotation\u002F\">data annotators\u003C\u002Fa> is so important.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Above all that, privacy concerns limit the amount of available data in medicine. Working with sensitive patient data is a tricky issue. It seems we cannot keep our privacy intact AND also benefit from A.I.&#8217;s advantages in our care. We saw in many cases how sensitive information can get leaked \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.securitymagazine.com\u002Farticles\u002F96399-over-800-million-medical-records-exposed-in-data-breach\">even unintentionally\u003C\u002Fa> – and we are not even talking about hacking or privacy, just a poorly protected database. New methods like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffederated-learning-can-protect-patients-data-in-hospitals\">federated learning\u003C\u002Fa> might make it possible to do this without breaching patients&#8217; privacy, but its scope is limited.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That is where synthetic data could be of help. It can fill in the missing data, making it possible to produce entirely fabricated patient datasets that are just as useful for training A.I. as the real thing, while keeping patient data protected.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Privacy, quality and bias\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the use of such trained datasets, even the\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fa-i-bias-in-healthcare\"> existing bias\u003C\u002Fa> could be overruled in A.I. programming. There’s an ongoing issue in A.I.-based programming due to the limited access to data focusing on race, skin colour and other matters. An MIT Media Lab \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fgendershades.org\u002F\">study found\u003C\u002Fa> that facial-recognition systems from companies like IBM and Microsoft were 11-19 percent more accurate on lighter-skinned individuals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Synthetic data could help overcome this challenge as the training could focus on such variables, making use of real-world environments. A group of researchers in Michigan have developed a computer vision model to help improve pathologist decision support to more accurately diagnose brain tumours. Their challenge was that if they wanted to use brain scans from other institutions, the algorithm’s efficiency dropped as it could not compare the different types of scans.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By using synthetic data trained on much larger datasets, their algorithm was “\u003Cem>better able to learn what to look for in our pathology images\u003C\u002Fem>” – Dr. Todd Hollon, neurosurgeon and principal investigator of the machine learning in neurosurgery laboratory at Michigan Medicine \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fsynthetic-data-boosts-accuracy-and-speed-brain-tumor-surgery-cds\">explained\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Synthetic data might not be the holy grail for solving all the issues healthcare A.I. programming poses.
