Telemedicine \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rose to fame\u003C\u002Fa> as a ready-made solution; artificial intelligence’s contribution \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-sober-state-of-artificial-intelligence-in-the-fight-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became more apparent\u003C\u002Fa> from early outbreak predictions to resource management; and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-digital-health-technology-can-help-manage-the-coronavirus-outbreak\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital health technologies\u003C\u002Fa> lent a helping hand early on.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another promising area joining the fight is network medicine, a branch of network science. The latter field studies the interaction between actors within a network. Such analyses are applicable to virtually any sector, from the world wide web through social networks to how molecules interact with each other. Applying such theories to human biology yields network medicine; the study of biological networks to better understand and help treat diseases.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of network medicine’s pioneers is \u003Cstrong>Albert-László Barabási\u003C\u002Fstrong>, a distinguished university professor at Northeastern University in Boston, and his research lab, the BarabasiLab. In \u003Cstrong>less than 10 days\u003C\u002Fstrong> since repurposing their network medicine toolset to find a treatment for COVID-19, the BarabasiLab had \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcovid.barabasilab.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002Fnetwork-based-embedding-of-all-human.html\" target=\"_blank\">a list of promising drugs\u003C\u002Fa> for testing in human cell lines in an experimental lab. We turned to Prof. Barabási for additional insights regarding network medicine’s contribution in the COVID-19 fight. But first, let’s get acquainted with the science in question before turning to the scientists behind it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What is network science?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is often claimed that “\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.researchgate.net\u002Fpublication\u002F259432292_What_is_network_science\" target=\"_blank\">networks are everywhere\u003C\u002Fa>”, and it’s not far from the truth. Network science hails its origin from scientists studying the interaction between entities, essentially, analyzing their networks. Two major components make up those networks: nodes (or vertices) and links (or edges). The latter are the connections between the nodes, which themselves represent anything from individual humans to websites to economic systems to, you guessed it, viruses. This theory led to more research interest in this field; and thanks to the increased computing power that came along during those times, the ability to study networks in more details was possible; further leading to a boom in researching the science of networks.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>From network science through network medicine to COVID-19\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prof. Barabási wrote in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nejm.org\u002Fdoi\u002Ffull\u002F10.1056\u002FNEJMe078114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his 2007 paper\u003C\u002Fa> that “\u003Cstrong>networks pervade all aspects of human health\u003C\u002Fstrong>”. By applying network science to human physiology (and pathology), he raised a paradigm shift in how we perceive ailments; writing that “diseases may not be as independent of each other as medical practitioners currently consider them to be”. He concluded the paper by coining the term “network medicine”; where networks include nodes representing biological factors, such as molecules and diseases, and links are their relationships, like metabolic pathways and shared genes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Network medicine has since picked up steam. It now helps scientists study the interconnected relationships between networks such as that of genes, proteins and pathogens. They are using \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcovid.barabasilab.com\u002F2020\u002F03\u002Fcovid-19-and-network-medicine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">past research on viral-host interactions\u003C\u002Fa>, along with new data on protein-protein interaction map for COVID-19, as well as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcovid.barabasilab.com\u002F2020\u002F03\u002Fcovid-19-moving-fast.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assistance from artificial intelligence\u003C\u002Fa>, to find a treatment for the novel coronavirus.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In many ways, the COVID offers a great test for us to marshal the set of highly predictive tools that we as a community [have developed] in the past two decades,” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fspectrum.ieee.org\u002Fthe-human-os\u002Fcomputing\u002Fnetworks\u002Fnetwork-science-potential-covid19-therapies\" target=\"_blank\">Barabási said\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How is network medicine finding a treatment?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A treatment for COVID-19 does not necessarily mean a brand-new vaccine or drug. In fact, existing drugs can be repurposed to improve the conditions of those infected. Moreover, given the urgency of the current pandemic, “we do not have time to develop, test, and clinically approve new drugs,” Barabási told us. “\u003Cstrong>The most time-efficient approach is drug-repurposing.\u003C\u002Fstrong>”&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With this in mind, the BarabasiLab turned to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.biorxiv.org\u002Fcontent\u002F10.1101\u002F2020.03.22.002386v3\" target=\"_blank\">the findings from a group of researchers\u003C\u002Fa> published this March about 26 of the 29 proteins that make up the SARS-CoV-2 viral particle. They also identified 332 human proteins that bind to those 26 coronavirus proteins; interactions of which lead to COVID-19’s devastating consequences.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2020\u002F04\u002Fcovid-19-network-science.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27595\"\u002F>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: https:\u002F\u002Fcovid.barabasilab.com\u002F\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prof. Barabási and his co-researchers \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fspectrum.ieee.org\u002Fthe-human-os\u002Fcomputing\u002Fnetworks\u002Fnetwork-science-potential-covid19-therapies\" target=\"_blank\">used their network medicine toolset to track\u003C\u002Fa> all possible interactions between these proteins. Out of these 332, they found that 208 interact with one another, effectively forming an interactive network.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“By simply identifying what neighborhood the virus hits, we can identify what are the potential drugs that are hitting in the same neighborhood, and therefore could be effective against the virus,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.northeastern.edu\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F02\u002Fnetwork-scientists-identify-40-new-drugs-to-test-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barabási said\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Using this method, they identified promising drugs previously not considered. “We are not limiting ourselves to drugs that hit those proteins that the virus targets,” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.northeastern.edu\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F02\u002Fnetwork-scientists-identify-40-new-drugs-to-test-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Barabási explained\u003C\u002Fa>. “We can also discover drugs that hit in the neighborhood that the virus targets”. These candidates are now in experimental labs for testing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Fresh insights into COVID-19\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Interestingly, applying network science in better understanding how the novel coronavirus interacts with the human cell is not only uncovering new potential treatments but also fresh insights into its functioning. This could help explain the neurologic symptoms reportedly associated with COVID-19, such as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fscopeblog.stanford.edu\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F17\u002Fhow-viruses-like-the-coronavirus-can-steal-our-sense-of-smell\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">loss of smell and taste sensations\u003C\u002Fa> or a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nejm.org\u002Fdoi\u002Ffull\u002F10.1056\u002FNEJMc2009787\" target=\"_blank\">higher risk of stroke\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, the brain and the lungs aren’t the only areas of interactivity within the COVID-19 network. Their \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fspectrum.ieee.org\u002Fthe-human-os\u002Fcomputing\u002Fnetworks\u002Fnetwork-science-potential-covid19-therapies\" target=\"_blank\">findings showed\u003C\u002Fa> that it may affect the reproductive organs, digestive system, kidney, spleen and even the skin of some patients. This could bring researchers from other fields’ attention to these organs; and better help decipher the conditions that could be associated with COVID-19, without traditional symptoms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The need for a helpful network\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Just like the networks of interconnecting proteins studied,\u003Cstrong> a robust network of people and technology is needed to fight COVID-19\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The BarabasiLab’s findings involved a group effort. Marinka Zitnik, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.northeastern.edu\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F02\u002Fnetwork-scientists-identify-40-new-drugs-to-test-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">applied machine learning\u003C\u002Fa> to help Barabási’s group sift through the data on potential drugs for repurpose. The experimental testing will be done by yet another facility, the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories at Boston University. And if we fund promising drugs, I am sure that multiple hospitals will get involved in clinical trials.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Similarly to this network of collaborating experts, we need collaborative efforts on every level of society to defeat the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
