His wife and mother couldn’t stop crying for weeks before he left, so by the time they escorted him to the train station, they couldn’t even have tears anymore. He went off to war with their photos, a pack of cigarettes in his trench coat, and a promise that by the time he would come back, his son would be born. His wife, Annie, was six months into her pregnancy. The train hauled and spewed smoke all over the station, and Janek vanished in the cloud of the vehicle heading to Italy.

Half a year passed by, and Janek finally received the authorization to go on leave – to see his baby son back in his hometown. His son, Fredrik heard the story countless times and missed his practically unknown father dearly. Shortly after he reached the age of recruitment, Hitler annexed Czechoslovakia and life became utterly regulated according to Nazi rule. Fortunately, Fredrik survived the Second World War, even the street fights of the Prague Uprising at the end of the war. After the years of destruction and constant deprivation, times got more relaxed. He worked in the local beer brewery and in his spare time, helped rebuild houses across town. He married the blond Agneska with laughter that could also be heard in the next town.

When their third child, Jirí was born, into the setting of socialist Czechoslovakia, he started to feel some pain in his stomach. It came first as a breeze on a chilly November day. Then he started to lose weight and parallelly his appetite, too. Agneska asked him to go to the hospital and get it checked out. He refused and said she was overreacting. After a couple of weeks, he went to the doctor without having to be asked.

His face was as pale as dismayed his mood. When the physician said he had gastric cancer, he was not surprised, but when the specialist added that the only way to extend his life was a full stomach removal, he went into panic mode. How can you live without a stomach? In the end, his family convinced Fredrik to have the operation. The post-surgery recovery was painful and never seemed to end, but he managed. The end came when he suddenly got an infection in the hospital. His immune system was not strong enough to survive it. The sound of howling engines and the smell of newly painted vehicles always had a magnetic effect on him, even in his fifties. That’s when he ended up in hospital after not being able to take a bend in the Tatras. Imagine a future where a patient swallows a digital pill with such a monitorable origami robot placed inside of it, which would place drugs in the right place of the stomach.
