Fast forward a few years, add another 10 billion dollars, and a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2023\u002F1\u002F23\u002F23567448\u002Fmicrosoft-openai-partnership-extension-ai\" target=\"_blank\">very different level of public interest\u003C\u002Fa>. Of course, the latter came after public access to ChatGPT was launched, and OpenAI suddenly became a household name. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another development in 2021 caused a bigger stir: the tech giant \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fmicrosoft-dollar16-billion-entry-health-care-ai\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">announced its acquisition\u003C\u002Fa> of AI-powered speech-technology company Nuance. The deal \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F04\u002F12\u002Ftech\u002Fmicrosoft-nuance\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">amounted to $16 billion\u003C\u002Fa> (excluding debt); at the time making it Microsoft’s second-biggest acquisition ever, following its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cmswire.com\u002Fdigital-workplace\u002Fmicrosofts-interest-in-nuance-is-more-than-just-cloud\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">$26.2 billion purchase of LinkedIn\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;(The company had even bigger buys since then, unrelated to healthcare.)\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the clinical setting, Nuance’s software essentially works as a medical scribe. It can listen and transcribe doctor-patient conversations into organised medical notes. What sets Nuance’s healthcare solution apart from other voice assistants is that the company developed its AI to decipher the intricacies of such clinical conversations. “\u003Cem>That process of getting the system, the AI engine, to understand the medical jargon that’s important and difficult—I think that&#8217;s the real gem\u003C\u002Fem>,” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fmicrosoft-dollar16-billion-entry-health-care-ai\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">said Gregg Pessin\u003C\u002Fa>. Globally, hundreds of thousands of clinicians and tens of thousands of healthcare organizations use Nuance’s voice transcription technology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These two strategic investments converged in March 2023, when Microsoft announced that it would add GPT-4 into its Nuance Dragon Ambient Intelligence (DAX) platform, which is used by hospitals around the US to ease doctor workloads by using AI to listen to patient-provider conversations and write medical visit notes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This was not the only exciting \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Finsights-about-generative-ai-in-healthcare-from-400-healthcare-leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative AI-related\u003C\u002Fa> announcement this year: Epic Systems also declared that they are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.modernhealthcare.com\u002Fdigital-health\u002Fhimss-2023-epic-microsoft-bring-openais-gpt-4-ehrs\" target=\"_blank\">working with Microsoft to integrate generative AI\u003C\u002Fa> technology into its electronic health record software for the first time. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>&#8220;There are two initial AI-enabled solutions developed in the first iteration of the integration. The first use case occurs through In Basket, allowing clinicians to use generative AI to create a draft response when communicating asynchronously with patients. The second use case allows providers to use AI to source recommendations from Slicer Dicer, our data visualisation tool, where the system will automatically recommend different metrics based on search criteria.&#8221; &#8211; \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.epic.com\u002Fepic\u002Fpost\u002Fepic-and-microsoft-bring-gpt-4-to-ehrs\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Epic&#8217;s statement said\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A few months later, in August 2023 \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblogs.microsoft.com\u002Fblog\u002F2023\u002F08\u002F22\u002Fmicrosoft-and-epic-expand-ai-collaboration-to-accelerate-generative-ais-impact-in-healthcare-addressing-the-industrys-most-pressing-needs\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the two parties announced\u003C\u002Fa> the expansion of this collaboration, showing yet more convergence between various Microsoft ventures: &#8220;Epic will showcase this DAX Express AI technology embedded into the native Epic Hyperdrive platform and Haiku mobile application, further enhancing a seamless workflow experience for users.&#8221; \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the technology under its umbrella, Microsoft can further integrate it with its cloud services for healthcare. The software behemoth’s CEO, Satya Nadella, even said that with this acquisition they will help provide professionals everywhere to use advanced AI solutions for better decision-making and create more meaningful connections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI outside the GPT realm\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These were not the only avenues Microsoft discovered in the past few years in the artificial intelligence field. Researchers at Addenbrooke&#8217;s Hospital trained the AI program with Microsoft, which can help doctors calculate \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhealth-65988768\" target=\"_blank\">where to direct the therapeutic radiation beams\u003C\u002Fa>, to kill cancerous cells while sparing as many healthy ones as possible. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It&#8217;s such a great practical example of how AI can contribute to the well-being of patients. &#8220;For each patient, doctors typically spend between 25 minutes and two hours working through about 100 scan cross-sections, carefully &#8220;contouring&#8221; or outlining bones and organs. It integrates the company’s existing services like Microsoft Teams, Azure IoT and its&nbsp; Healthcare Bot. This is because the company likely doesn’t want to repeat past mistakes and be more effective in its healthcare investments.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Unlike Apple, Microsoft’s wearable plans didn’t really work well and it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002Fcircuitbreaker\u002F2016\u002F10\u002F3\u002F13152590\u002Fmicrosoft-band-discontinued\" target=\"_blank\">discontinued the Microsoft band fitness tracker\u003C\u002Fa> in 2016. It is also the first company that publicly announced the development of a dedicated healthcare-specified AI model, called Med-PaLM. And as the variety of listed solutions on the \u003Ca rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealth.google\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Google Health page\u003C\u002Fa> shows, the company has something to offer to everyone, from patients and caregivers to communities, and researchers.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this series exploring the latest moves by tech giants into healthcare, we recently analysed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Famazon-in-healthcare-disruption-data-nightmares-and-digital-health-dreams\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon\u003C\u002Fa> and provided insights into the trends they are adopting. For now, let’s turn our focus on Google’s plan for the future of healthcare. But since it acquired DeepMind, it has intended to expand this expertise elsewhere, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdeepmind.com\u002Fblog\u002Fannouncements\u002Fdeepmind-health-joins-google-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including healthcare\u003C\u002Fa>. And its efforts are showing promise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In August 2020, they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fai.googleblog.com\u002F2020\u002F08\u002Fusing-machine-learning-to-detect.html\" target=\"_blank\">introduced C2D2\u003C\u002Fa>, a machine learning-based approach to improving colonoscopy screening. In the ensuing months, Google further put its AI as well as cloud computing expertise to use in new partnerships. In 2021, HCA Healthcare and Alphabet’s Google Cloud \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2021\u002F05\u002F26\u002Fjim-cramer-googles-new-health-care-venture-is-reason-to-buy-alphabet.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced a collaboration\u003C\u002Fa> to develop algorithms to mine insights into patient records from the provider to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Also launched in 2020, Google&#8217;s mammography AI system starts bringing in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fgoogle-health-expands-ai-powered-breast-cancer-screenings-integration\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tangible results\u003C\u002Fa> by now. Recent studies show that using AI to support radiologists in breast cancer screening \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fai-can-conduct-breast-cancer-screenings-in-less-time-than-humans-but-just-as-well-study-finds\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">can significantly reduce screen reading workload\u003C\u002Fa> with comparable cancer detection efficiency as standard double-reading.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But of course, in 2023 all eyes are on \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fgenerative-ai-explained-its-impact-and-future-in-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\">generative AI\u003C\u002Fa>. According to the company, the medically-tuned generative AI-powered search is able to mine various data sources, including FHIR data, patients&#8217; clinical notes, and other medical information.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While Med-PaLM currently seems to be the most advanced of large language models in terms of healthcare accuracy, Google faces stiff competition. Microsoft, for instance, has secured its place in clinics with Nuance&#8217;s Dax and Dragon AI systems, tools used by hundreds of thousands of US doctors. When it comes to the cloud market, Google ranks fourth, trailing Amazon, Microsoft, and Alibaba. It allows any user to participate by reporting their symptoms, the steps they are taking to prevent getting ill, and if they’ve had relevant tests. But it also raises privacy concerns over the handling of such data.
