It triggered a rapid expansion in health technology – some obvious, like the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\" target=\"_blank\">rise of telemedicine\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-rise-of-at-home-lab-tests\" target=\"_blank\">at-home lab tests\u003C\u002Fa>, others filled a much-needed immediate void. The demand for safe solutions inclined the development of robotic support in hospitals – and drones.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I must admit, I expected the rise of drone-based solutions years ago (and I \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flancet\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS0140-6736(16)30361-0\u002Ffulltext\" target=\"_blank\">wasn’t alone\u003C\u002Fa> with my expectations). By now, we are just at the very beginning of using drones in healthcare. And still, even now, when COVID-19 clearly showed the necessity for them, drones don’t seem to break through and stay with us in the new normal.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.unicef.org\u002Fsupply\u002Fmedia\u002F5286\u002Ffile\u002F%20Rapid-guidance-how-can-drones-help-in-COVID-19-response.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">UNICEF guidance note\u003C\u002Fa>, the organisation identifies three basic types of potential use cases for drones:\u003Cbr>(1) delivery and transportation;&nbsp;(2) aerial disinfection, and (3) public space monitoring. During the pandemic, we have seen examples for all three cases – and more. American startup Zipline was \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-in-rwanda\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">delivering such supplies in Rwanda\u003C\u002Fa> already in 2016. Conducting the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.psqh.com\u002Fanalysis\u002Fdrones-could-be-the-future-of-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">first round of drone test\u003C\u002Fa> flight in 2018, WakeMed Health &amp; Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, together with the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation, sent drones “\u003Cem>to carry simulated medical packages from Raleigh Medical Park, located across the street from the campus to the main tower at the hospital.\u003C\u002Fem>” Not a long haul, but still, an important one,&nbsp;for drones in Rwanda fly easier in its less-regulated and less crowded airspace than those in the U.S.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Zipline remained active in Africa during COVID-19. More recently, they helped in the delivery of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2021\u002F3\u002F9\u002F22320965\u002Fdrone-delivery-vaccine-ghana-zipline-cold-chain-storage\" target=\"_blank\">COVID vaccines in Ghana\u003C\u002Fa>, where the company has been actively delivering medical supplies since 2019. By bringing 11,000 vaccines in a matter of days, the important batch quickly reached remote areas – places that otherwise were challenging to get to by means of traditional logistics. In 2020, the company also began service in the U.S., where they delivered PPEs and other supplies to a hospital in North Carolina. This was “the first time the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftechnology-52819648\" target=\"_blank\">FAA has allowed\u003C\u002Fa> beyond-line-of-sight drone deliveries in the US.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But Zipline isn’t the only company using drone delivery. German manufacturer \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwingcopter.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wingcopter\u003C\u002Fa> has partnered with Japan’s All Nippon Airways to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdronelife.com\u002F2021\u002F04\u002F20\u002Fwingcopter-in-japan-partnership-with-ana-hd-trials-drone-delivery-to-japans-remote-island-communities\u002F?utm_source=The+Medical+Futurist+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=555cf2b28f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2021_04_25_Resend_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_efd6a3cd08-555cf2b28f-&amp;mc_cid=555cf2b28f&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliver medical supplies\u003C\u002Fa> to the island communities of Japan. The goal of the trial project is to set up commercial drone flights by 2022. The trial was promising, decreasing patient waiting lines dramatically.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Future of Medical Drone Delivery is Local\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FSqBROGWG4d0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There’s little to know about the current state of the partnership between UPS and CVS on prescription medicine drone delivery. The two loudly \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F4\u002F27\u002F21238196\u002Fups-cvs-drone-delivery-medicine-florida-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\">announced a cooperation\u003C\u002Fa> a year ago to provide the service in a large retirement centre in Florida. As the companies haven’t (yet) posted of any further collaboration, the project is probably discontinued.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A step further, Swedish company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.everdrone.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Everdrone\u003C\u002Fa> built a drone system that delivers Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.cision.com\u002Feverdrone-ab\u002Fr\u002Fautonomous-drones-are-now-delivering-defibrillators-to-80-000-residents-in-sweden,c3112538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to the scene of cardiac arrests\u003C\u002Fa>. The drones get to the scene before an ambulance can, and with the defibrillator, anyone could initiate life-saving measures until the ambulance arrives. This is already a step towards the future, and I do hope to see (much) more of such initiatives in practice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Drones in aerial disinfection\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another field where drones could add substantial value is disinfection. Sanitising convention centers, entertainment or sports venues with safe disinfectants enables us to get back to our lives and enjoy the safety of clean surfaces. From \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ndtv.com\u002Fchennai-news\u002Fcovid-19-chennai-based-start-up-using-drones-to-disinfect-hospitals-2203226\" target=\"_blank\">hospitals\u003C\u002Fa> to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2020\u002F10\u002F01\u002Ftech\u002Fdrone-stadium-sanitize-spt-trnd\u002Findex.html#:~:text=The%20drones%20are%20being%20used,seating%20bowl%2C%20the%20release%20said.\" target=\"_blank\">football stadiums\u003C\u002Fa>, drones seemed invaluable – at least until \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedirect.com\u002Fscience\u002Farticle\u002Fpii\u002FS0048969720378207\" target=\"_blank\">research showed\u003C\u002Fa> that there’s a certain amount of risk these public sprayings pose to both the environment and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcupe.ca\u002Fsafety-concerns-spraying-chemicals-disinfect-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">humans\u003C\u002Fa>. After finding more friendly solutions, public spraying continued. Whether it’s really effective depends on a vast number of factors from the amount to distance, quantity, material, and so on.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>AERAS, a drone company from Pittsburgh, U.S., recently \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdronelife.com\u002F2021\u002F05\u002F12\u002Fdrone-take-flight-to-disinfect-sports-entertainment-venues\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">got the green light\u003C\u002Fa> from the FAA to use drones to disinfect venues, while another American company, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businesswire.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhome\u002F20200810005554\u002Fen\u002FPerpetual-Motion-Debuts-Revolutionary-Drone-Disinfectant-Technology-to-Drive-Safety-First-Approaches-for-Large-Scale-Facility-Reopenings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Perpetual Motion, was the first\u003C\u002Fa> to use drones to spray an EPA-approved, hospital- and food-grade neutral disinfectant for large indoor and outdoor facilities and arenas.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drone deployed to disinfect hospital in Xiamen\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002F8LIFcIdnL_g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aerial spraying was banned mainly in Europe before the pandemic. In the U.K., the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhealth-52109824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debate began last year\u003C\u002Fa> to ease this ban, but many countries in the EU have questioned whether \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.chinadaily.com.cn\u002Fa\u002F202004\u002F17\u002FWS5e990ed4a3105d50a3d16e37.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this form of disinfecting\u003C\u002Fa> is beneficial. Nevertheless, it is used in several countries like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.scmp.com\u002Ftech\u002Fgear\u002Farticle\u002F3077945\u002Fspains-military-uses-dji-agricultural-drones-spray-disinfectant-fight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spain\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fyoutu.be\u002FJ5O3PQKhllQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">France\u003C\u002Fa>, while others wait out.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Monitoring and warning\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As mentioned above, the possible uses of drones in healthcare are just being explored. For example, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.unisa.edu.au\u002Funisanews\u002F2020\u002Fautumn\u002Fstory11\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Vital Intelligence project\u003C\u002Fa> in Australia used drones to monitor people for signs of the virus. Within the program, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.unisa.edu.au\u002Funisanews\u002F2020\u002Fautumn\u002Fstory11\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of South Australia\u003C\u002Fa> and Canadian drone company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdraganfly.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Draganfly\u003C\u002Fa> developed an algorithm for drones to “remotely monitor and detect people with infectious respiratory conditions.” There is no news of the effectiveness of the project, but it forecasts a socially distant future where humans can be safely monitored and diagnosed with possible viruses.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Health drone demonstration\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FberV-Aik0kg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another possible feature for drones was employed in Spain and China. At the height of the very first lockdown efforts, these governments \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Fspanish-police-using-drones-to-ask-people-stay-at-home-2020-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used drones as loudspeakers\u003C\u002Fa> to warn people to stay at home. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fav\u002Fworld-europe-51900325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This BBC video\u003C\u002Fa> shows disturbingly dystopian images from the two countries, but these are not isolated examples.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And wait, there’s more.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Telehealth\u003C\u002Fstrong> drone\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Researchers at the University of Cincinnati \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Funiversity-cincinnati-researchers-invent-new-telehealth-drone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invented a telehealth drone\u003C\u002Fa> with cameras and a display screen to enable two-way communication – with drone support. The drone could also carry samples or medication and could be a perfect solution for remote areas, anywhere in the world.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>&#8220;\u003Cem>When the COVID-19 pandemic began, we saw a need for telehealth care delivery drones to provide healthcare in the home and in locations where access to care is not readily available\u003C\u002Fem>,&#8221; Debi Sampsel, telehealth director at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing, explained in the article.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So why don&#8217;t we use drones more often? According to a Swedish study, the main issue is regulation. Swedish researchers modeled the possible impacts of drones during quarantine. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medrxiv.org\u002Fcontent\u002F10.1101\u002F2020.04.15.20067025v2.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">In this paper\u003C\u002Fa>, they also put forward the need to easing regulations under some circumstances: “\u003Cem>Indeed, one stumbling block to drones ubiquity is the generally absent regulation, in particular in regions with less strict or absent (anti-)drone laws, UAVs are already widely used for medical applications including infectious disease surveillance and epidemiology.”&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On one hand, regulations are in the way of development. On the other, they are missing the point. Legal considerations (as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjrupprechtlaw.com\u002Fdrone-delivery\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">listed here extensively\u003C\u002Fa>) include ownership of airspace, responsibilities and authorisations of the drone pilots. And how about flights in or above congested areas? What kind of insurance drones\u002Foperators\u002Fpackage owners must have? How is data protected and what if drones are hacked – can they be? Can drones commit trespassing? Can they get too loud and cause disturbance?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>It’s a long list of issues to be solved before drones can become a part of our lives. It offers fantastic cooperation between humans and technology, which could elevate the level of precision and efficiency of surgeries so high we have never seen before. AI, surgical robots, 3D printing and new imaging methods are already \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2021\u002F04\u002F30\u002Ftechnology\u002Frobot-surgery-surgeon.html\" target=\"_blank\">used on a wide scale\u003C\u002Fa> of procedures. But there’s much more to the future of surgery than that.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although robotic-assisted surgeries are not yet the mainstream way of operating patients, these procedures are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rcseng.ac.uk\u002Fstandards-and-research\u002Fstandards-and-guidance\u002Fgood-practice-guides\u002Frobotic-assisted-surgery\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">already used in 70+ countries\u003C\u002Fa> around the world, millions of times each year. According to some \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.strategicmarketresearch.com\u002Fblogs\u002Frobotic-surgery-statistics#:~:text=Between%202012%20and%202022%2C%20the%20percentage%20of%20general%20surgery%20procedures,from%201.8%25%20to%2017%25.&amp;text=Robotic%20surgery%20is%20becoming%20increasingly,for%2070.6%25%20of%20total%20surgery.\" target=\"_blank\">widely used &#8211; although hard to source\u003C\u002Fa> &#8211; statistics, some 15-20% of the surgeries in the United States have robotic assistance.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With AI technologies rising, surgeons can enlist additional technological aids, as algorithms will certainly play a role in their future lives, from helping in surgical planning to designing custom implants. It is time to see how new technologies will transform this medical specialty.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here, I collected the technologies that will significantly impact the future of surgery.\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step zero: surgeons to rethink their profession\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Before touching base with technology, we need to think about the human quotient of the department. Surgeons bear huge responsibilities: they might cause irreparable damage and medical miracles with one incision on the patient’s body. With the rise of digital technologies, the operating rooms and surgeons are inundated with new devices to make the least cuts possible. We need to deal with these new surgical technologies to make everyone understand that they extend the capabilities of surgeons instead of replacing them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Surgeons also tend to alienate themselves from patients. Human touch is not necessarily the quintessence of their work; however, as technological solutions find their way into their practice taking over part of their repetitive tasks, it would make sense to rethink their stance. It was a huge step for surgery, and anyone could \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicalrealities.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">participate in it,\u003C\u002Fa> in real time. Ever since, companies like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fossovr.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Osso VR\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.immersivetouch.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">ImmersiveTouch\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Foramavr.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">OramaVR\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fundamentalvr.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Fundamental VR\u003C\u002Fa> have used VR as both training or imaging solutions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>VR can elevate the teaching and learning experience in medicine to a whole new level, replacing students peeking over the surgeon’s shoulder during an operation. By using VR, surgeons can stream operations, allowing medical students to be in the OR virtually, using their VR goggles. Helping doctors practise procedures or life-saving moves is invaluable.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Beyond surgical training, VR can also be used to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalgiving.stanford.edu\u002Fnews\u002Fvirtual-reality-system-helps-surgeons-reassures-patients.html\" target=\"_blank\">help patients understand their procedures\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Facsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\u002Fdoi\u002Fabs\u002F10.1002\u002Fcncr.35282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manage pain and anxiety\u003C\u002Fa>.
