Medical scribes shadow clinicians during their consultations \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fspencerdorn\u002F2024\u002F11\u002F15\u002Fwhere-ai-ambient-scribes-are-heading\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to document the encounter\u003C\u002Fa> in real-time which is then reviewed and signed off by the clinician. Over time, there have been some changes to the practice, such as moving from writing on papyrus to inputting data into electronic health records. The concept of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsunoh.ai\u002Fblog\u002Fvirtual-medical-scribes-in-healthcare-the-rise-of-ai\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual scribes\u003C\u002Fa>, where a scribe works remotely, has even taken off.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, scribes are set for a major technological evolution in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Recent years have seen the advent of AI scribes and they are likely to become more ubiquitous in the digital health age. To get a better outlook on AI scribes, in particular, medical AI scribes, this article dives into the concept and contemplates 3 ways in which the technology can aid clinicians and even human scribes in their tasks.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What are medical AI scribes?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Simply put, medical AI scribes are software that automate clinical documentation during doctor-patient encounters. They are algorithms that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fspencerdorn\u002F2024\u002F11\u002F15\u002Fwhere-ai-ambient-scribes-are-heading\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rely on speech recognition and large language models\u003C\u002Fa> to automatically transcribe the conversation during those encounters to provide clinical notes. AI scribes perform this in real-time, by “listening in” on conversations, such as via the microphone of a smartphone or computer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As they are based on sophisticated models, they can \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalcare.rcp.ac.uk\u002Fcontent-items\u002Fblog\u002Ffrom-dictation-to-automation-the-rise-of-ai-scribes-in-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provide impressively accurate and streamlined\u003C\u002Fa> notes that filter out non-essential dialogues. While AI scribes can sound similar to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fvoice-to-text-technologies-shape-the-future\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voice-to-text apps\u003C\u002Fa>, they are more powerful than the latter. Human scribes can \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2025\u002F01\u002Ffrom-paper-charts-to-ai-scribes-the-ehr-revolution\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have a better context\u003C\u002Fa> than AI scribes. They can inform clinicians about specific consultation details or access important information without disrupting an ongoing consultation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In fact, human medical scribes and clinicians can benefit by collaborating with AI scribes. In the next section, we consider practical ways in which this can be the case.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Practical ways AI scribes can aid medical practice\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the recent boom in AI products, several companies have come forth with medical AI scribe solutions. In fact, investments in such products have doubled in 2024, according to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Financial Times\u003C\u002Fa>. They are already being \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trialled by several institutions\u003C\u002Fa> such as the UK’s National Health Service and Stanford Medical School.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the adoption of medical AI scribes is relatively recent, some studies have shown their benefits. Below, we share a collection of these potential advantages that such tools can bring to medical practice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. Reduce the risk of physician burnout\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Operating electronic medical records (EHRs) is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhbr.org\u002F2018\u002F03\u002Fto-combat-physician-burnout-and-improve-care-fix-the-electronic-health-record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">among the major contributors\u003C\u002Fa> to physician burnout. They can spend \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F31931523\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an average of 16 minutes\u003C\u002Fa> per patient encounter on electronic health records. For example, Nuance has reported that its DAX Copilot tool \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has halved\u003C\u002Fa> the clinical documentation time for physicians. Their product is in use at over 500 US healthcare groups and documents over a million consultations per month.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Enhance administrative tasks and workflow\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Administrative burden such as clinical documentation and EHR logs not only adds to burnout but has also been \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Farticles\u002FPMC7761950\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown to be inefficient\u003C\u002Fa>. Clinicians have to go through multiple screens to find relevant information and this can \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fcouncils\u002Fforbestechcouncil\u002F2020\u002F09\u002F21\u002Fthe-other-health-care-crisis-the-lack-of-ehr-usability\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce their productivity\u003C\u002Fa> and workflow. For example, in addition to generating clinical notes, AI scribes like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.lyrebirdhealth.com\u002Fuk\u002Fblogs\u002Ftop-4-best-ai-medical-scribes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lyrebird\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ambiencehealthcare.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ambiance\u003C\u002Fa> can generate additional documents such as referrals, prescription forms and care plans. This can facilitate the work of human scribes who can review and approve the documentation, while clinicians are also supported in workflows beyond consultations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Improve patient satisfaction and quality of care\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By automating routine tasks such as EHR entries, AI scribes are essentially freeing up time for human scribes and physicians. Studies have shown that employing medical scribes \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Farticles\u002FPMC11088287\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can lead to\u003C\u002Fa> improved patient satisfaction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What to expect from medical AI scribes in the near future?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The convenience of medical AI scribes and the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boost in investments\u003C\u002Fa> mean that we won’t have a shortage of such tools in the near future. We can further expect them to become adept at tasks beyond note-taking to provide suggestions for follow-ups and treatment plans.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the efficiency of such features will require \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fspencerdorn\u002F2024\u002F11\u002F15\u002Fwhere-ai-ambient-scribes-are-heading\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deeper integration in EHR systems\u003C\u002Fa> to be able to tailor recommendations for individual patients. In the short term, this might only be possible by some tools that collaborate with EHR providers. But this poses additional privacy risks. Stringent safeguards need to be enforced to ensure the transparency of these tools, for example regarding how they handle sensitive patient information.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Furthermore, the accuracy of these tools needs to be ensured. There are reports that suggest that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 90% of notes\u003C\u002Fa> generated by Nuance’s AI scribe during trials at Stanford Medical School had to be manually edited for inaccuracies. Other studies have found that some AI transcriptions can even \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Farxiv.org\u002Fpdf\u002F2402.08021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include harmful hallucinations\u003C\u002Fa>, or made-up content.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There should, therefore, not be an overreliance on such AI output. This is where a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmarianaai.com\u002Fpost\u002Fai-medical-scribe-vs-human-scribe-the-future-of-healthcare-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaboration with human AI scribes\u003C\u002Fa> can be beneficial. With their expertise, they can review the AI-generated content, add better context, and facilitate communication between patients and medical teams.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The popularity of medical AI scribes should serve as a wake-up call for policymakers to step up their regulatory practices.
