When weighing the possible outcomes of COVID-19, we drew \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Flife-after-covid-19-what-will-change\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">three scenarios\u003C\u002Fa> on how life will, can, and should change after the pandemic. \u003Cstrong>This time we put on our VR headsets, fast forward to 2030 and have a look at what we have gained and what we lost to the virus.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are certain points in our history we all remember. Whoever lived, knew exactly what he was doing the moment JFK got shot. When the twin towers collapsed. And when COVID-19 hit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>It’s the end of the world as we know it\u003C\u002Fem>” – \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=OA_CndlBu0g\" target=\"_blank\">sang R.E.M.\u003C\u002Fa> back in 1987, and although there was no pandemic in sight, the band got the message so right that 33 years later the song got back on charts: it was the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.itunescharts.net\u002Fus\u002Fartists\u002Fmusic\u002Frem\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">23rd most downloaded\u003C\u002Fa> song in the U.S. this March. The apocalyptic song might be with us for 33 years but the pandemic probably won’t. However, we surely know what we were during the first months of 2020, and how the world has changed from one day to the other. This was one of the first things we got rid of when the virus hit. Long gone the father-son moments of teaching a proper handshake – in 2030 we’d rather do the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FVulcan_salute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulcan salutation\u003C\u002Fa>. Much more modern, and it also requires a bit of finger training to do it right. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Washing hands, blast from the past\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Simply because we’ll all wear protective gloves – at all times. In fact, these are haptic gloves and we can control pretty much everything with it: our smarthomes, our cars, our computers and of course, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.counterpointresearch.com\u002Fready-player-one-lessons-future-virtual-reality\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">our games\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Social distancing as alienation effect\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The so-called “\u003Cem>Verfremdungseffekt\u003C\u002Fem>” is originally a theatrical technique based on the concept of German drama Bertold Brecht. This “distancing effect” was used to prevent viewers from forgetting they watch a play. This is one of the real unfortunate effects of the first pandemic – our lives in the human sense never got back to normal. We’d rather go domestic\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The extreme amount of global travel we experienced in the 2010s is also a thing of the past. With many airlines never recovered from the 2020 lockdown, traveling by air is much more seldom. Supertrain networks in the US and in Europe make sure one can get to places superfast. People also opt for taking cars to discover domestic destinations. Moreover, with the evolution of VR technology, VR equipment helps you easily set up a little Havana or Bali on your balcony, which costs a lot less and lets you stay safe at all times. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As 2020 brought the era of online meetings, the number of business travelers are down, and by 2030 most companies have a no-go policy, saying goodbye to unnecessary air mile-collecting. Cautious air travel is possible, but is challenging: it takes more time and there are extra security costs. Many people have simply decided it’s not worth it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Science above politics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Luckily, humanity finally chose the right path – at least for now. In 2030 we all listen to scientists \u003Cem>before\u003C\u002Fem> politicians, and the media is only a platform provided to facilitate the clash of smart argumentation between society and scientists. Is this too far-fetched? This is what the Swedish are trying to do (and in 2030 we’ll already know if that was successful). In any case, humanity had to experience a global pandemic to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-unlikely-rise-of-science-and-digital-health-during-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">start listening to science\u003C\u002Fa> again. And hopefully won’t ever stop doing so.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">…\u003Cstrong>and smart politics over old slogans\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The 2020 U.S. elections showed a distinct split from the past both in terms of social and healthcare issues. (but make decisions on our own)\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By the end of the decade, we mastered the science of digital technologies and eradicate bias out of all programming. This means we can trust A.I. when it comes to big data, when it issues warnings, helps in drug design. It even helps forecast the spread of the outbreaks that occur from time to time. Ultimately there has been a \u003Cem>global cooperation on pandemic control\u003C\u002Fem> and digital dominance does not overwhelm everyday life of people but helps us make informed decisions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Patients as the point of care\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By 2030 telemed has become the normal way of primary care: what started with COVID-19, became full reality. It takes only a technological step (telemed or chatbot) to get to meet a medical professional. As patients become the point of care, doctors handle their patients’ data online through \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedirect.com\u002Fscience\u002Farticle\u002Fpii\u002FS138650561930526X\" target=\"_blank\">blockchain\u003C\u002Fa> technology. They cooperatively make joint decisions, based on the apps and wearables of the patient.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Healthcare data is the new oil\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Since the heat of coronavirus, we all know we have to give up some of our privacy aspects for better healthcare and virus spread prevention. \u003Cem>Sharing our data keeps our families and societies safe.\u003C\u002Fem> We also know that our sensitive data is securely locked as global guidelines were set for it in 2022. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Biotechnology on top\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Biotech is now the new energy industry. It helps create innovative medications and vaccines when needed and are valued more than ever – we said in 2020 that it would revolutionize healthcare, and by 2030 it certainly did. There will probably be multiple waves of pandemics over the next decade. There will be major decisions that need to be made on digital security as well as environmental issues on local and global scales; and those will affect everything from the economy to housing, travel and our lifestyles directly. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It will also affect who we elect as our leaders, as in 2020 many governments try to take advantage of the pandemic situation, an issue we must bear in mind next time we stand at the polling station. And maybe all this will bring a spiritual uplift where compassion and cooperation are real and ordinary. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>One thing is certain, in 2030 we’ll all remember what we were doing during these first months of 2020. A virus that, due to globalisation, spread at an unprecedented speed, stormed the entire planet and there is only one thing that can stop it as it is now: a vaccine. But then we’ll be in lockdown for years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Over the past year several lockdowns have taken place. We adopted new habits, learned and worked through videoconferences, made social distancing an everyday habit and masks a fashion item. But we all hate these, don’t we? So once we have a chance to end the pandemic, I’d say we should go for it; and with several trustworthy and reviewed vaccines available worldwide, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fourworldindata.org\u002Fgrapher\u002Fcovid-vaccination-doses-per-capita?tab=chart&yScale=log&stackMode=absolute&time=latest&country=ARG~BHR~BEL~BRA~CAN~European%20Union~FRA~DEU~HUN~IND~ISR~ITA~MEX~RUS~SAU~ESP~SWE~TUR~ARE~GBR~USA~OWID_WRL&region=World\" target=\"_blank\">the race for vaccination\u003C\u002Fa> has begun. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In April 2020, we collected what will be the most specific changes we would need to bear even after the pandemic has gone. Almost a year on and the virus still upon us, we are revisiting those statements and having a look at all those things we expected and forecast: what \u003Cem>will\u003C\u002Fem> \u003Cem>surely\u003C\u002Fem> change, what \u003Cem>has the chance\u003C\u002Fem> to change and what \u003Cem>should\u003C\u002Fem> change in the future. Our 2021 updates are clearly marked within the topics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What will surely change\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We’ve seen it all during this global public health crisis; overwhelmed hospitals \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnypost.com\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F23\u002Fcoronavirus-patients-spotted-lying-on-floor-at-overrun-madrid-hospital\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">forcing patients to sleep on the floor\u003C\u002Fa>; mounting fear of being in proximity to others; but also the importance of a robust healthcare system. As a consequence of our collective and individual experiences throughout the pandemic, things will change in the healthcare landscape. An unprecedented toll on healthcare workers\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we wrote: \u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During this global tragedy, it’s not only the economy or the population that’s being affected but also the healthcare professionals on the frontlines. The latter are enduring \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.huffpost.com\u002Fentry\u002Fthis-is-what-medical-workers-fighting-coronavirus-want-you-to-know_l_5e7e4d72c5b6256a7a2a01c5\" target=\"_blank\">extreme work conditions and sacrifices\u003C\u002Fa> in order to help the infected. Despite a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), they show up to work using DIY-solutions like ski goggles and bin bags with a high risk of being infected. Many are working overtime and witnessed patient after patient succumb to the disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>The anxiety of knowing you might be at risk when you’re doing your job can be very challenging for health care workers\u003C\u002Fem>,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F3\u002F5\u002F21166088\u002Fcoronavirus-covid-19-protection-doctors-nurses-health-workers-risk\">says Terri Rebmann\u003C\u002Fa>, a nurse researcher and director of the Institute for Biosecurity at Saint Louis University. “\u003Cem>It’s physically and mentally draining\u003C\u002Fem>.” This will lead to an inevitable spike in burnouts among the healthcare staff. Before the novel coronavirus, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fphysician-burnout\u002F\">some estimated\u003C\u002Fa> nearly half of the world’s 10 million physicians had symptoms of burnout. Now imagine after COVID-19…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More than burnouts, we will see frontliners with symptoms of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\">post-traumatic stress disorder\u003C\u002Fa> (PTSD). After this pandemic subsides, we will have to brace ourselves for the aftermath on medical professionals on the frontlines.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\">\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2021 UPDATE \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>This is one of the saddest and most depriving moments in the history of medicine. All of the above are still underway: medical professionals being emotionally drained, leaving the field, having mental health issues and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailynews.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F22\u002Fa-lot-of-us-are-going-to-have-ptsd-fatigue-burnout-exhaustion-plague-health-care-workers-during-covid-surge\" target=\"_blank\">burnout\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.concordmonitor.com\u002FCOVID-traumatizing-doctors-and-nurses-38381975\" target=\"_blank\">Institutions\u003C\u002Fa>, governments and even the direct management of medical facilities realised this way too late and are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fuk-wales-55770323\" target=\"_blank\">now rushing\u003C\u002Fa> to\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.africanews.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F25\u002Fcommunity-health-workers-must-be-better-supported-in-2021-the-year-of-the-healthcare-worker\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> provide support\u003C\u002Fa> to staff with direct counselling, online support or via applications – with mixed results. We could travel almost without limitations, meet people without restrictions and order products worldwide. This will simply change after billions of people had to stay indoors for weeks.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We will not be able to travel that freely or enjoy the supply chains of the world so easily. We will think twice before going somewhere or meeting someone. The pandemic is already exacerbating \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5808278\u002Fcoronavirus-anxiety\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">signs of social anxiety and agoraphobia\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Cstrong>Regaining trust takes time\u003C\u002Fstrong> and these trends will take place for months after lockdowns are lifted.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2021 UPDATE\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>By now we would all happily choose to stay at home “for weeks” as written above; in reality, we have been as good as closed down for months. Working from the office, meeting our besties, planning a vacation and travelling freely, grabbing a coffee or going to the gym still seem quite far. And although we have positive takeaways from online meetings (we can be much more effective), home or office is still not a choice but a situation.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Moreover, with so much time spent online, we now have multiple generations glued to the screens and sometimes unknowingly spreading misinformation limitlessly. Focus on the healthcare system\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we wrote: \u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s tragic how the pandemic highlighted the shortcomings of healthcare systems worldwide. The overburdened hospitals need an upgrade on every level from their infrastructures to their processes. These will be needed to ensure a safe environment for the personnel and patients, as well to better cope with any emergency situations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, one of the reasons speculated for Germany’s comparatively low death rate is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-germany-leveraged-digital-health-to-combat-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">its good intensive care situation\u003C\u002Fa>. Digital health \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-digital-health-technology-can-help-manage-the-coronavirus-outbreak\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">showed its aptitude\u003C\u002Fa> to deal with such a crisis. We can expect to see many governments put more focus on healthcare. They can adopt similar strategies employed by other countries that better managed the crisis. Some might voluntarily go out to catch the virus in the hopes of gaining immunity to it. There will be a lingering fear of unemployment due to being forced to stay in isolation without such a passport. It would provide safety for travellers and hosts alike, and it seems that governments feel the privacy concerns raised soon enough by NGOs, experts and the media.
