To put it in focus:\u003Cstrong> how can I talk about longevity when I cannot even download my medical records from a healthcare institution?! \u003C\u002Fstrong>How can you improve your current healthcare status if you don’t become more proactive in managing your health? But don’t get me wrong, I believe that we will turn ageing into a standalone condition rather than an eventuality. We will have treatments to specifically target this ailment and extend our lifespan, especially years spent in good health. It&#8217;s not just a research question (when they find such treatments) but also a sociological one, because extending our lifespan starts with digital health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Join us as we look at some of those issues we must tackled before turning our attention to longevity issues. But before, let’s peek at progress in the latter field.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The maturing of the life-extension field\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Living for longer and healthily so (think feeling like you’re in your 40s when you are 238 years old) is, understandably, an enticing prospect for many. You will live long enough to visit or move to other planets just like you travel to other countries; you could play football with your great-great-great-grandchildren; and architecture enthusiasts might even see the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FTime_Pyramid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Time Pyramid\u003C\u002Fa> to completion.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even if the American Board of Medical Specialties \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthycellsmagazine.com\u002Farticles\u002Fthe-dangers-of-aging-gracefully-physicians-and-the-dubious-field-of-anti-aging-medicine\" target=\"_blank\">neither recognises the anti-ageing\u003C\u002Fa> field as a specialty (yet) nor the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.a4m.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine\u003C\u002Fa>’s professional standing, some of the brightest contemporary scientists like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Faubreydegrey\" target=\"_blank\">Aubrey de Grey\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002F10138849\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Venter\u003C\u002Fa> are driving progress in the longevity field to make such possibilities a reality by making life extension a focused field of science. Dr. Aubrey de Grey co-founded the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mfoundation.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Methuselah Foundation\u003C\u002Fa> in 2003. The latter funds anti-ageing research and has as strategic goal: &#8220;\u003Cem>Making 90 the New 50 by 2030\u003C\u002Fem>.&#8221; Dr. de Grey also helped set up the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sens.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">SENS Research Foundation\u003C\u002Fa> in 2009 that funds and conducts research in longevity. Craig Venter, of the human genome sequencing fame, founded \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.humanlongevity.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Human Longevity Inc.\u003C\u002Fa> in 2014. Founded in 2013, the secretive, Google-backed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.calicolabs.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Calico\u003C\u002Fa> focuses on anti-ageing research. Stanford University has its own \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Flongevity.stanford.edu\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Center on Longevity\u003C\u002Fa>; while Harvard researchers \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnewatlas.com\u002Fgdf11-protein-aging-mice-harvard\u002F31929\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">previously discovered\u003C\u002Fa> a protein that could reverse the ageing process in mice.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the U.K., Bristol University researchers are investigating \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Ftechnology\u002F2020\u002F09\u002F11\u002Fcan-silicon-valley-beat-ageing-five-technologies-could-help\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">robotic muscle implants\u003C\u002Fa> to slow down the effects of ageing. The American startup \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nanotics.com\u002F\">NaNotics\u003C\u002Fa> is developing nanorobots that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.worldhealth.net\u002Fnews\u002Fnanotech-suggests-have-found-way-combat-age-related-diseases\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">“mops up” molecules that trigger diseases and ageing\u003C\u002Fa> from the circulation. For $200,000, you can already have your body cryopreserved at \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.alcor.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Alcor\u003C\u002Fa> and “pause the dying process” until future technology can bring you back in good health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While not all of these ventures might help cure aging, the growing interest and investment in tackling this issue shows that we are on the path to do so. In fact, Aubrey de Grey \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fav\u002Ftechnology-43402894\" target=\"_blank\">believes that\u003C\u002Fa> the first person to live to 1000 years old may have already been born.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What we need to tackle first\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>All things considered, the technologies under investigation for prolonging healthy lifespan &#8211; nanotechnology, robotic muscles, cryonics and the like &#8211; form a part of disruptive technologies that define digital health. As such, once the technology permits it, longevists will face the same issues, if not more heightened, as we are facing with digital health if these aren’t already addressed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Those are the issues that we are dealing with at The Medical Futurist to prepare for the digital health era and beyond. Below are the issues we need to tackle first before we contemplate topics around longevity at length.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. The need for a cultural transformation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The first peer-reviewed paper from The Medical Futurist Institute \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">defined digital health\u003C\u002Fa> as “t\u003Cem>he cultural transformation of how disruptive technologies that provide digital and objective data accessible to both caregivers and patients lead to an equal level doctor-patient relationship with shared decision-making and the democratisation of care\u003C\u002Fem>.”&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The cultural transformation aspect is crucial, but often overlooked. This will enable them to better address medical as well as ethical issues that these new tools bring along. They could thus serve as guides, helping patients navigate the waves of new technologies flooding the healthcare landscape.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is especially the case now that Big Tech companies not traditionally involved in healthcare \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftech-giants-in-healthcare-new-e-book\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">secure a firm footing\u003C\u002Fa> in this industry. However, recent developments showed that policymakers have a poor grasp over how tech companies operate. Mark Zuckerberg’s hearing following the Cambridge Analytica scandal \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsenators-dont-understand-facebook-will-make-sense-digital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highlighted\u003C\u002Fa> this.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Without understanding how tech companies work and handle our data, how will policymakers address issues that arise with companies offering more advanced technologies that deal with life and death?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. A shift from health IT to digital health\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Health IT has become an integral component of most modern clinics. By integrating patient data in electronic health records (EHR), these systems improve over the traditional paper-based records by being scalable, cloud-based and not prone to being misplaced. However, those same EHR and IT systems add to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fphysician-burnout\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">physician burnout\u003C\u002Fa>, are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcan-we-eliminate-waiting-times-from-healthcare-forever\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">time-consuming\u003C\u002Fa> and are prone to cyberattacks. The latter can cripple whole systems like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-nhs-ransomware-attack-data-privacy-in-digital-health-part-one\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the WannaCry ransomware attack on the NHS\u003C\u002Fa>; and in extreme cases lead to patient death. This was the case in September 2020 during \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F9\u002F17\u002F21443851\u002Fdeath-ransomware-attack-hospital-germany-cybersecurity\" target=\"_blank\">a ransomware attack on the Duesseldorf University Hospital\u003C\u002Fa>. Due to re-routing and delayed care during the attack, a patient passed away.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, health IT and digital health are often wrongly looped together. To demarcate the two, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhealth-it-or-digital-health-the-gary-rule-helps\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the “Gary rule”\u003C\u002Fa> helps. It refers to Gary, the IT specialist, who alone can fix health IT issues like outdated antivirus software. For instance, artificial intelligence can \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fartificial-intelligence-could-solve-alarm-fatigue-in-hospitals\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">reduce alarm fatigue\u003C\u002Fa>. Medical robots can \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-digital-health-technology-can-help-manage-the-coronavirus-outbreak\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">reduce cross-infection\u003C\u002Fa> from highly infectious COVID-19 patients. Without shifting to digital health to make such solutions integral parts of the hospital setting, how will stakeholders in the field adopt technologies and novel therapies that add to longevity?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Embrace the patient empowerment movement\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the democratisation of healthcare and access to medical data that digital health technologies offer, patients have more agency than ever before to proactively manage their health. They use \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-5-health-trackers-for-running\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">wearables\u003C\u002Fa> to keep track of their fitness activity, to order \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fi-got-my-whole-genome-sequenced-heres-what-i-learned\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">direct-to-consumer genetic sequencing kits\u003C\u002Fa> to better understand their risks for ailments and to join online patient communities to have better insights over their ailments.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The ivory tower of medicine has evolved past its hierarchical model that bars access to patients altogether. They demand an active part in the decision-making in matters pertaining to their health and wish to have an equal-level partnership with healthcare professionals. Earlier this year, Epic, the largest EHR company in the U.S. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statnews.com\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F27\u002Fepic-should-support-health-data-rule-not-block-it\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">downplayed the federal government’s effort\u003C\u002Fa> that would enable easier access to one’s electronic health data. Epic’s CEO \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F22\u002Fepic-ceo-sends-letter-urging-hospitals-to-oppose-hhs-data-sharing-rule.html\" target=\"_blank\">wrote to hospital administrators\u003C\u002Fa>, nudging them to disapprove of the proposed rules. Giving patients access to their data should be an imperative rather than a roadblock. They can better know what information clinics have about them and even cross-check for any errors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If major players aren’t supportive of such demands from patients, then the latter will create or turn to alternative solutions. One example is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhugo.health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo Health\u003C\u002Fa>, which connects patients with their medical data and only moves data with their permission. Regulatory authorities could support such efforts to better guide patients as to where to turn to; rather than have them adopt unregulated third parties.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If at present we cannot access our medical data freely to make informed decisions in a secured and regulated landscape, will we be able to do so in the future to better assess which therapies and technologies are better suited to improve our healthy years?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Until we address longevity issues\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While we have only described three issues that we have to address now, there are many more in practice. If you encountered any downtimes along the way to this “hospital journey maze”, you know you’ll be there for more time than planned. But you know the drill as it’s a quasi-global phenomenon and an expected component of the healthcare experience: waiting times.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This component is as “pleasant” as it sounds. A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.softwareadvice.com\u002Fresources\u002Fhow-to-treat-patient-wait-time-woes\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">survey from Software Advice\u003C\u002Fa> that involved over 5000 patients found that 97% of respondents were frustrated by wait times at the doctor’s office. Another \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cardiovascularbusiness.com\u002Ftopics\u002Fpractice-management\u002Freport-20-patients-have-changed-doctors-because-long-wait-times\" target=\"_blank\">report from Vitals\u003C\u002Fa> showed that 30% of surveyed patients have already walked out of an appointment because of a long wait and 20% have changed doctors due to wait times. We can surely empathise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, waiting times have further economic repercussions. The Altarum Institute’s 2019 report found that long wait and travel times \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fintouchhealth.com\u002Fhow-telehealth-can-reduce-healthcare-wait-and-travel-times\u002F?gdprorigin=true\" target=\"_blank\">lead to some $89 billion\u003C\u002Fa> annually in missed opportunities. Another \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Flong-wait-times-in-ers-drive-up-costs-signal-health-care-distress-125198\" target=\"_blank\">analysis by an economist at the University of South Carolina\u003C\u002Fa> found that a 10-minute increase in emergency room (ER) wait time for patients with serious conditions will increase the hospital’s cost to care for the patient by an average of 6%. The author further noted that such critical patients are currently waiting nearly an hour. We have to note that an hour spent waiting at the ER seems a pretty optimistic guess, all recent data we found shows significantly more both in the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fresearchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\u002Fdocuments\u002FCBP-7281\u002FCBP-7281.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">UK \u003C\u002Fa>and the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.autoinsurance.org\u002Flongest-emergency-room-waits\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">US\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To make waiting more bearable, you might have noticed hospitals offering reading materials or tablets for internet access. Some researchers even went as far as to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjournals.lww.com\u002Fpec-online\u002FAbstract\u002F2008\u002F12000\u002FEmergency_Department_Waiting_Room_Stress__Can.6.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">investigate the benefits of aromatherapy\u003C\u002Fa> to reduce waiting room stress. It didn’t make the experience any more tolerable. And these attempts at diverting patients’ attention don’t solve the issue itself.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Why do we wait to receive healthcare?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Waiting times are a reflection of the functioning of the fragmented health system in Australia and in many parts of the world,” Ugenthiri Naiker tells us. Naiker is a researcher from the Queensland University of Technology who \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.publish.csiro.au\u002Fah\u002FFulltext\u002FAH16275\" target=\"_blank\">analysed and published studies\u003C\u002Fa> about waiting times in healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This will continue to be a part of patient’s experience as long as there continues to be wastage (inappropriate treatment), inefficiencies (operational) and misalignment (supply versus demand) of services,” adds Naiker. “There are also underlying cultural issues where waiting times are used to funnel patients away from the public sector to seek treatment in the private sector at their own cost. At a global level, ongoing demand factors ensure that waiting times will continue to be a significant issue.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At first glance, technology is also adding to increased wait times in healthcare institutions. Studies showed that for every hour physicians spend face-to-face with patients, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpnhp.org\u002Fnews\u002Fphysicians-spend-two-hours-on-ehrs-and-desk-work-for-every-hour-of-direct-patient-care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">2 additional hours are spent\u003C\u002Fa> on electronic health records (EHR) and desk work within the clinic day. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedium.com\u002F@slingshothealth\u002Fthe-doctor-will-see-you-in-3-weeks-why-appointment-wait-times-are-rising-and-what-you-can-do-about-ef233b68f942\" target=\"_blank\">33% of doctors\u003C\u002Fa> report that EHR “reduced the quality of care given to patients”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Can digital technologies help?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even if the EHR is giving technology a bad rap when it comes to waiting times, it is but one technology. However, there are several ways where technology can cut down on the time to access care. Let’s see how this is the case now and what lies ahead in the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. Reaching healthcare facilities in time\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Waiting to access healthcare does not only happen in the waiting room but even before reaching there. On average, a patient experiences \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fintouchhealth.com\u002Fhow-telehealth-can-reduce-healthcare-wait-and-travel-times\u002F?gdprorigin=true\" target=\"_blank\">34 minutes of travel time and 11 minutes of wait time\u003C\u002Fa> before accessing healthcare services. The time spent travelling and waiting accounts for more than half of the time spent actually receiving care. As a result, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fdoctor-visits-could-provide-relief-to-uber-and-lyft-11562756401\" target=\"_blank\">millions of people miss their doctor’s appointments\u003C\u002Fa> annually due to poor transportation services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To address the travel time issue in healthcare, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fride-hailing-platforms-solve-problems-transportation-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">ridesharing services\u003C\u002Fa> such as Uber and Lyft found a niche to fill. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.uberhealth.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Uber Health\u003C\u002Fa> provides a HIPAA-compliant technology for healthcare organizations to manage and monitor rides for patients and staff to and from hospitals. Its competitor, Lyft, recently expanded its services for non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) rides \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.lyft.com\u002Fblog\u002Fposts\u002Flyft-healthcare-launches-lyft-assisted\" target=\"_blank\">by offering Assisted\u003C\u002Fa>, a transport option specifically designed for patients who need some help. No more travelling with remote care&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What’s more comfortable than the place we call home? With remote digital solutions, we can eliminate the issue of travel times altogether, while having faster access to quality care right at home. This is especially efficient to reduce unnecessary hospital visits. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Here, telemedicine is an apt solution. During the pandemic, such services \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">have been on the rise\u003C\u002Fa>. Even cancer patients were continuing their treatment thanks to this technology. Moreover, telemedicine can help in reducing waiting times. By analysing 14 U.S. hospitals with telemedicine services, they found that patient wait times were reduced by 6 minutes on average as compared to those facilities that didn&#8217;t use telemedicine. It even allows patients to join a virtual queue which updates them on their position so they can grab a coffee at their favourite cafe while waiting for their turn. Patients can also alert staff remotely if they are running late. Such two-way communication between patients and hospitals helps in making more effective operational management.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4. Optimising administrative tasks\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We mentioned earlier that EHR takes up doctors’ valuable time. In fact,&nbsp; \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fvoice-to-text-technologies-shape-the-future\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70% of physicians\u003C\u002Fa> are themselves unhappy with their current system. This opt-in system records and monitors a patient’s oncotherapy pathway. It helps coordinators organise sessions and ensure that the patient shows up for all the relevant appointments in time. With the OnkoNetwork, the average time of examination decreased by nearly 70%. This gives a greater chance for surgical operations in case of certain oncological diseases, for a more efficient therapy, as well as for a lower cost of healing on the level of society.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>An emerging technology that can shave off considerable time from administrative work is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fvoice-to-text-technologies-shape-the-future\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">voice-to-text\u003C\u002Fa>. Rather than manually typing in details from an examination, this technology automatically documents visits by recognising speech and converting it into text. A.I. to refocus waiting time into time well spent\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As we gather more data and healthcare institutions get more connected, we could integrate the best data analyst of them all: artificial intelligence (A.I.). In the future, a high-tech system aided by an A.I. assistant will help optimise the time spent by a patient during their medical journey with an approach similar to the navigation apps used for driving.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such a system will integrate and analyse electronic records, availability of services, virtual queue tools and portable diagnostic devices to determine the best “path” to take. A &#8220;healthcare-navigation&#8221; system for might not eliminate waiting times but might make the patients’ journey more efficient. It can determine where the queue is longer and where it’s shorter. Afterwards, they head to their doctor’s office only for 3 minutes and have their results assessed.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Will waiting times ever be a thing of the past?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In the current healthcare environment, it is unlikely that outpatient waiting times will be eliminated,” Ugenthiri Naiker tells us. Indeed, this is what we set out to find out and calling it a herculean task barely does it justice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Still, waiting times are often the result of suboptimal logistics and can be addressed, at least to some extent.
