Literally. David Albert, the co-founder of the company, started experimenting with handheld, wireless ECG devices in the late 90s. Approximately 10 years later \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbig-kardia-review-evolution-digital-health\u002F\">we tried out their FDA-cleared, medical-grade gadget\u003C\u002Fa>. It was a truly inspiring moment. Needless to say, we’ve been keeping track of their journey ever since. In our eyes Kardia is the textbook example of technology shaping health care, empowering and supporting not only e-patients, but medical professionals as well. It took scientists quite some time to map the electrical pathways of the heart and come up with a way to properly measure the changes in its state. So today we have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fecglibrary.com\u002Fecghist.html\">fascinating stories\u003C\u002Fa> about dogs patiently standing in buckets full of saline solution, diagnosing arrhythmias in horses, then witnessing them during open heart surgeries and, yes, chickens getting electrocuted and then brought back to life (they even laid eggs after this shocking experience). \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> All so that we can wait for the assistant to hook us up on the machine, wait (a bit anxiously at this point) for the machine to do its thing, buzzing as it prints out the paper, and finally wait some more for the doctor to analyze the report. We can all agree there’s still room for improvement there. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Why is ECG still relevant today? After all, it sure is an old technology, isn’t it? With every beat, electrical signals rush through your heart- and electrocardiography records these with the help of electrodes. A 12- lead ECG can be used to track heart rate and rhythm, to determine the size and position, and to see if there’s tissue damage present. It’s a quick and pain- free method to check the general health of the heart. Since it measures your current state, it only detects problems present while you’re wearing the device. So, symptoms might fade by the time the patient gets to a hospital.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Frequently this is the problem when it comes to \u003Cstrong>the most common serious heart rhythm abnormality: atrial fibrillation\u003C\u002Fstrong>, Afib or AF for short. It affects around 2.5% of the population in western countries. AF happens when the atria contract rapidly and the rest of the heart has a hard time trying to catch up. The ability to pump blood is compromised, it’s inefficient, so blood pools and clots in places it’s not supposed to. These clots can then travel in the vascular system and cause an embolism or even a stroke. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Kardia can detect atrial fibrillation. In fact, it is only FDA-cleared to identify AF, tachycardia (increased heart rate) and bradycardia (low heart rate). It’s important to know that it’s not for diagnosing heart attacks or other diseases. It fits into your pocket, it’s light and it looks great. The plastic and metal exterior has a nice, minimalistic design. The box contains a quick start guide too, to help you set up your phone, record your first ECG and give you some tips on basic troubleshooting. You can buy a lightweight carrying case separately. The device doesn’t need to be charged and \u003Cstrong>the battery is said to last 1-2 years even with everyday use.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The app doesn’t take up much space and is easy to use. You pair Kardia6L with your phone via Bluetooth, open the app and follow the short and straightforward instructions. You can choose to take a single or a 6-lead ECG. Take a seat and relax a bit, then tap the record button on your screen. Touch the top two electrodes with your thumbs, then touch the bottom electrode to the skin of your left leg and stay still. As we mentioned earlier, Kardia is only FDA-cleared to indicate AF, but it can detect other abnormalities as well, hence the unclassified category. If you experience palpation-like symptoms, carrying this around for a quick check could give you peace of mind. It’s completely wireless and you don’t need any special equipment for a medical-grade answer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You can record your comments while holding the electrodes through voice recording. The recordings are then stored on your phone\u002Ftablet. In just a few simple steps, it’s easy to\u003Cstrong> e-mail or print your ECGs.\u003C\u002Fstrong> You can manually enter and track blood pressure and weight in the app as well, as these figures can also have a significant impact on the cardiovascular system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> On top of that, the premium plan includes medication tracking options, unlimited cloud storage of the recordings and a US only replacement plan. They send you customized reports regularly (again, this is a US only feature). With its promise to bring multichannel ECG as an add-on to your smartphone, it is certainly one of its kind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>My childhood magic box and smartphones\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I remember a tale from one of my aunts, which got caught in the back of my head ever since. One day, when a little boy played in the attic of their house with his cat, he threw away the ball, but of course cats are not for catching balls, so she refused to go after it. The ball fell into a huge box, and the little boy had to crawl into it. On the very bottom of the huge box he found a deep blue smaller one. He did not care that much, until the light began to twinkle on it. As he looked closer, he discovered that there were small, colourful pieces of mirrors glued on it. They shined through in spite of the dust accumulated over the years. The little boy threw his ball out, grabbed the box and crawled out.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As he started to wipe off the colourful mirror-pieces of the box, something miraculous happened. When he touched a yellow one, the box turned into a playful, friendly black cat, when he reached a red one, the box turned into a gramophone playing the tune currently on his mind, when he tapped on a green one, it turned into a little toy-car, a Porsche, what he wished for his birthday. He was amazed! The magic box gave him, what he wished for and what he needed. Over the years, I wished I had something like this. Then I realized, I actually do. Although it is not as pretty as the dark blue box decorated with colourful mirror pieces, it might give me what I need or what I wish for. Do you think your small child has an ear infection? You can already diagnose it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.facebook.com\u002Fmedicalfuturist\u002Fvideos\u002F1268685286559437\u002F\">with an accessory to your smartphone\u003C\u002Fa>! Do you want to monitor your blood pressure or follow-up on whether you had enough water for a given day? You can download the necessary apps or buy add-ons such as the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.withings.com\u002Fen\u002Fbloodpressuremonitor\">Withings Smart Blood Pressure Monitor\u003C\u002Fa> or the ECG Dongle for that matter.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many digital health devices, which you can connect to your smartphone so they help measure and analyse health parameters and vital signs. For example, I’ve been using \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.alivecor.com\u002Fhome\">Alivecor\u003C\u002Fa> for measuring ECG on my smartphone, there is the FDA-approved \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.mckesson.com\u002Fproviders\u002Fhealth-systems\u002Fdepartment-solutions\u002Fcardiology\u002Fmckesson-cardiology-ecg-management\u002F\">McKesson Cardiology ECG Mobile\u003C\u002Fa> and many others are on their way. However, these are usually single-lead ECGs, commonly known as a rhythm strip; while multichannel – usually 12-lead – ECGs record information from different views of the heart, and provide a complete picture of electrical activity. While both types of ECG monitoring are viable, there have not yet been developed any multichannel ECGs on a smartphone. According to Nordavind, it targets first of all emerging markets, including the Middle East, North Africa or South East Asia with its product, so it offers both developments for a fairly reasonable price.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It has a unique construction as the device itself is a USB flash drive. As such, it does not have its own battery, but runs on the power of your smartphone or tablet. The developers took the demands of both Android and iOS users into account, so you can connect it to an iOS device with a special adapter, while to an Android gadget with a standard OTG-cable. ECG Dongle specifies on its website that their product does not have FDA-approval – or any similar approval from any health regulator –, clearly marking that it is “not a product of medical technology”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The main difference between the product aimed at medical professionals and average people is that the former is able to capture data on heart functions corresponding to the 6-standard lead measurement, while the latter is able to provide 12-lead ECG. They told me that they developed a multichannel ECG in order to allow to calculate heart data through 6 standard leads (I, II, III, aVR, aVL, AVF). It is enough to detect all kinds (100%) of arrhythmias, while it requires only four electrodes. The latter is especially important, because it makes anyone without any medical or technical experience to connect the device and carry out the measurement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Also, ECG Dongle not only offers you to monitor your heart data, but also your stress level. On the English-speaking website, you can find a video guiding you through the measurement process. For me, it was very simple and easy to use. You should download the ECG Dongle app, attach the electrodes with the help of the patches to your body and within seconds, you will see how your heart beats and what the status of your stress level is. All the features are measured in real time, so it is pretty neat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although my problem was that they do not provide analysis through the app, just the simplest. For having some clue what you are looking at or whether you have any health problems, you have to send your data to the so-called “CardioCloud”.
