These range from thought-provoking ones through sarcastic remarks to more original queries. However, a significant number of those questions revolve around futurists’ work. For instance, a physician once asked me about how futurists see their forecasts. While interviewing me, another journalist blamed futurists for always coming up with wrong predictions. The common factor to both of these examples is that they don’t understand what futurists actually do.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Many think that futurists spend their days hunched over a crystal ball with a tinfoil hat and report on whatever wild thought that crosses their mind. These misconceptions are justified by the numerous far-fetched ideas publicized but were only to grab media attention. On a more serious note, by understanding or even using the same methods that futurists do, anyone can distinguish hype from the actual trends that deserve attention because it might soon become a necessary skill.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>More science, less crystal ball\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even though futurists often describe abstract concepts such as “\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Fobituaries\u002F2016\u002F06\u002F30\u002Falvin-toffler-futurologist--obituary\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">computer-telecommunications hook-ups\u003C\u002Fa>” (an early forecasting of online communication), they base their analyzes on actual science. “Futures Studies” is the science in question, and universities even \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.utu.fi\u002Fen\u002Fstudy-at-utu\u002Fmasters-degree-programme-in-futures-studies?utm_source=masterstudies&utm_medium=keystone&utm_campaign=web_site\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">teach it at Master’s level\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a branch of social sciences, Futures Studies is comparable to its sister branch, Archeology. Archeologists uncover past history to better understand societies and human activity, and how it led to where we are now. Futurists do the same but in the opposite direction. We spend our time thinking about the future, analyzing trends and building potential scenarios that could be useful today. Hence, the task of futurists is considerably challenging, leading to many forecasts going off track. As \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fer.educause.edu\u002Farticles\u002F2019\u002F3\u002Ffive-principles-for-thinking-like-a-futurist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marina Gorbis\u003C\u002Fa>, Executive Director of the Institute for the Future (IFTF), a non-profit research and consulting organization based in Silicon Valley, says: “\u003Cstrong>If somebody tells you they can predict the future, don’t believe them.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Nobody can predict large socio-technical transformations and what exactly these are going to look like.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Indeed, futurists don’t predict the future but rather think about possible upcoming scenarios by systematically studying trends and data available. The terms might get intermingled, but the condensed version of what we do is trend analysis and scenario building. But if no one can predict the future, then why think about it and make forecasts at all?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>We should all be a little bit of a futurist\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Science fiction writer William Gibson famously said that “the future is already here, it’s just not very evenly distributed.” The current world is full of signs that hint to where we’re heading. Detecting those signs is what interests futurists in order to better analyze them. Gorbis correctly mentions that “often these are things or developments that are on the margins”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, at The Medical Futurist, we lay emphasis on the importance of artificial intelligence in healthcare. It shows promise in dealing with issues across the medical spectrum from \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fartificial-intelligence-could-solve-alarm-fatigue-in-hospitals\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">alarm fatigue\u003C\u002Fa> to crises like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-sober-state-of-artificial-intelligence-in-the-fight-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19\u003C\u002Fa>. Even if the technology’s adoption isn’t currently widespread, it will find its place among doctors and they must prepare to collaborate with it. Amy Webb, a quantitative futurist and professor of strategic foresight at the New York University Stern School of Business, says that her task revolves around \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.technologyreview.com\u002F2016\u002F12\u002F28\u002F243894\u002Fhow-to-think-like-a-futurist\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">asking the right questions\u003C\u002Fa>. In fact, \u003Cstrong>half of a good forecast involves asking the right question\u003C\u002Fstrong>; it has to have a purpose, certain parameters and some uncertainty. Let’s take an example to illustrate the concept.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s say you are at a wedding and someone asks about the newlyweds’ chance of getting a divorce. Most people would think there’s a low chance of this happening because they seem happy here and now. However, every couple is (hopefully) happy on their wedding day. A good forecaster on the other hand would ask where they got married and thereafter look for divorce rates in that country or region. Then they’ll make an assumption about the probability for a divorce. This systematic, data-driven method is how we proceed on a forecast.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As for scenario building, I recommend aspiring medical futurists to expose themselves to science-fiction content during my \u003Cem>Lessons In Digital Health \u003C\u002Fem>course at Semmelweis University. Even if those sci-fi media don’t offer solutions and often depict dystopian alternatives, they do offer a “what if” scenario which is helpful to build on your own forecasted outcomes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In fact, picturing “what if” scenarios when we come across a new technology or development on a daily basis is the simplest way of becoming more future-oriented. “What if it becomes the next best thing?” “What if it snowballs into an ethical nightmare?” “How will stakeholders handle this?” “How will I deal with it?” Through such daily practice, you gradually train yourself to have a futurist’s mindset.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Getting good with the Good Judgement Project\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Indeed, data and sci-fi insights are sexy to futurists; but where to practice some more of this other than crashing weddings or watching movies? For this, I highly recommend the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgoodjudgment.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Good Judgement Project\u003C\u002Fa> (GJP). \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Professors from the University of Pennsylvania founded GJP in 2011 for a forecasting tournament. It then grew to become one of the most popular forecasting services employed by governments and decision makers to obtain foresight into various topics. It engages its community in forecasts for a wide range of topics from the unemployment rate in Australia for August 2020 to whether Apple will announce a ridesharing partnership with a major automaker by the end of the year. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They even have \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gjopen.com\u002Ftraining\" target=\"_blank\">video tutorials\u003C\u002Fa> to start forecasting. These help you break down questions to make informed estimates and hone your forecasting skills \u003Cem>sans \u003C\u002Fem>crystal ball! If your forecasts get close to the actual results, you might even get invited to become a Superforecaster for GJP like I did! \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Equipping a new skill\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“If you are a futurist, you will get into the practice of looking for signals all the time,” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fer.educause.edu\u002Farticles\u002F2019\u002F3\u002Ffive-principles-for-thinking-like-a-futurist\" target=\"_blank\">notes Marina Gorbis\u003C\u002Fa>. “When you wake up in the morning and read the news, you will look at everything through the lens of these signals. You will naturally ask about events: “Is this a signal of something? Why?” This kind of curiosity and the ability to continually sense while also sharing with others are very important.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Having such a mindset when looking at current events will not only help you analyze them with a new outlook, but it will help you get better prepared for upcoming changes. Concerning healthcare, the #1 book in digital health is Dr. Eric Topol’s masterpiece, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.amazon.com\u002FThe-Patient-Will-See-You\u002Fdp\u002F0465054749\">The Patient Will See You Now\u003C\u002Fa>. Topol is a cardiologist and director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute. He wrote an extensive and profound analysis about how digital health will bring the democratization of healthcare. Beyond Topol’s book, I recommend \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.amazon.com\u002FThe-Digital-Doctor-Medicines-Computer\u002Fdp\u002F0071849467\">The Digital Doctor\u003C\u002Fa> from Dr. Bob Wachter. It captures the conflicting emotions around the future healthcare and carefully analyzes the hopes and hypes around the changes. These two books will give you an absolutely clear picture of where we are heading.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you would like to dive into comprehensive overviews about healthcare, I recommend Topol’s other book, The Creative Disruption of Medicine, which details the future of mHealth. How doctors will prescribe more mobile application than actual medication to patients; or how patients should take care of themselves and be the driving force in medicine. How maybe in the future, we will be able to download ourselves in a digital format just as in the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror. In \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.imdb.com\u002Ftitle\u002Ftt0119116\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Fifth Element\u003C\u002Fa> directed by Luc Besson, not only can you see Bruce Willis saving the world in a bloody white shirt again, but also how 3D-printing a whole body could look like in the future. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.imdb.com\u002Ftitle\u002Ftt0119177\u002F\">Gattaca\u003C\u002Fa> was released in the same year as The Fifth Element, and it shows you the non-desired future of genomics – with inferior or superior human beings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.imdb.com\u002Ftitle\u002Ftt0338013\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind\u003C\u002Fa>, the movie-makers contemplated what happens if we erase parts of our memory from our minds or add new ones. Christopher Nolan’s movie, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.imdb.com\u002Ftitle\u002Ftt1375666\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Inception\u003C\u002Fa> also talks about the mysterious workings of the human mind. Imagine that you can upload or download data from your mind, or even implant ideas into other persons’ subconscious.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Robotics has inspired people’s minds and movie directors for ages. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.imdb.com\u002Ftitle\u002Ftt1446714\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Prometheus\u003C\u002Fa> shows that with the advancement of robotic intervention in surgery, robots might be able to carry out even serious surgeries without human supervision in the future.
