Sure, they sound like straight out of a \u003Cem>Star Trek \u003C\u002Fem>episode, but such sci-fi-esque devices are realities, freely available to be purchased by the public.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the concepts or technologies behind those disruptive devices in the healthcare setting often come from fields traditionally unrelated to it. This article will explore 5 of our favourite examples of technologies that were initially alien to healthcare but are becoming integral parts of it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>Want to cure diseases? Let’s play a game!\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If your Mum told you as a child that video games aren’t any good, then now you might want to give her a call to tell her that she was wrong. Case in point: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffold.it\u002F\">Foldit\u003C\u002Fa>, an online computer game where players can contribute to better understand proteins and ultimately, help curing diseases. By solving puzzles, anyone, without any prior biochemistry knowledge, can try to fold protein structures as perfectly as possible to reach a high score and improve their global rank. The highest scoring structures will then be analyzed by scientists to better understand a given protein’s structure (or how it “folds”) and determine its potential use in curing diseases and finding new vaccines.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Welcome to Foldit! A year later, in 2011, Foldit players \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.huffpost.com\u002Fentry\u002Faids-protein-decoded-gamers_n_970113\" target=\"_blank\">generated protein models\u003C\u002Fa> that helped better understand an AIDS-related problem that kept baffling scientists for years, and the gamers outdid the latter ones in merely 3 weeks! In late 2019, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblog.lyft.com\u002Fposts\u002F2019\u002F10\u002F24\u002Flyft-is-providing-rides-for-eligible-medicaid-patients-in-six-states-increasing-access-to-care-for-potentially-nine-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Lyft expanded its non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) rides\u003C\u002Fa> for Medicaid patients in more states, reaching out to millions.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other companies and startups like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.circulation.com\u002F\">Circulation\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fkaizenhealth.org\u002F\">Kaizen Health\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fveyo.com\u002F\">Veyo\u003C\u002Fa> are also offering on-demand NEMT ride-ordering services for patients to reach hospitals in a secure and reliable manner. Applications of blockchain in healthcare range from securing patient’s health records, like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpwc.blogs.com\u002Fhealth_matters\u002F2017\u002F03\u002Festonia-prescribes-blockchain-for-healthcare-data-security.html\" target=\"_blank\">Estonia\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwam.ae\u002Fen\u002Fdetails\u002F1395302787646\" target=\"_blank\">Dubai\u003C\u002Fa> are already doing, to tackling counterfeit drugs with a barcode record system that can be tracked from manufacture to the end user.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u003Cstrong>Automating tasks to bring the era of the art of medicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When A.I. started to go mainstream, some feared an algorithm going rogue \u003Cem>à la \u003C\u002Fem>Skynet, while others clamored about being replaced by computers. Similar \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vox.com\u002Fa\u002Fnew-economy-future\u002Fcomputers-replace-doctors-teachers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">concerns were voiced\u003C\u002Fa> when the technology was being implemented in healthcare. An A.I. startup using A.I. for drug design decided to become a pharma company and run the trial themselves.\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A.I. startups and big pharma collaborations for drug design are quite common. Those A.I. companies provide the simulation technology and computational models for a drug’s development, while the pharma company sees the project till completion.&nbsp; However, this collaboration often comes to a close as soon as the project ends and the A.I. startup no longer has any say on the drug’s fate. The Danish government’s clear vision and calculated steps set an example for others to follow. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.politico.eu\u002Farticle\u002Fgermany-aims-to-become-eu-leader-in-digital-health-revamp\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Germany has been making serious moves\u003C\u002Fa> to turn itself into the digital health reference in Europe with its plans like equipping all insured patients with electronic health records and tightening data security. Following in those countries’ footsteps, there will be at least 5 countries which will push forward digital health strategies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> While there are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnational-digital-health-strategies-around-the-world\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">other notable examples\u003C\u002Fa> in national digital health strategies, we speculate that other countries will follow the trend. This will be driven by the fact that the countries taking the lead will continue doing so, unless the rest also enter the race and announce their very own national policies.
