There are two ways that companies generally take to make smart toilets. Withings’ \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.withings.com\u002Feu\u002Fen\u002Fu-scan\">U-Scan line of products\u003C\u002Fa> collects and analyses urine \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.prnewswire.com\u002Fnews-releases\u002Fwithings-u-scan-brings-urine-analysis-into-the-home-302597379.html\">via thermal sensors\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For its part, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.notebookcheck.net\u002FVovo-Neo-smart-toilet-monitors-health-usage-and-safety.1183171.0.html\">Vovo’s Neo smart toilet\u003C\u002Fa> is a new hardware that not only includes a urine analysis sensor, but also features a heated seat, a self-cleaning heated-water bidet, and automatically deodorises the air. Toto’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.totousa.com\u002Fneorest\">Norest line\u003C\u002Fa> includes smart toilets \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2025-11-28\u002Fkohler-and-toto-are-betting-on-smart-toilets-as-the-future-of-health-tech\">with dedicated optical sensors\u003C\u002Fa> to analyse stool.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This range of products highlights the nascent aspect of the smart toilet category, and we are likely to see more experimentation in the coming years. Companies are exploring this field of health as they believe that the biodata that we flush down the drain every day can improve one’s health or even save lives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The data that we flush out\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s true that what comes out of the body might be as important as what goes in. Urine and stool analyses are common clinical tests to assess the functioning of one’s internal organs. It can reflect aspects of a person’s nutrition, hydration, hormonal balance, and metabolism. In 2025, researchers in South Korea \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.news-medical.net\u002Fnews\u002F20250123\u002FNew-diagnostic-device-could-enable-at-home-early-bladder-cancer-detection.aspx\">developed a diagnostic device\u003C\u002Fa> that could enable at-home early bladder cancer detection. Their system identifies a biomarker associated with bladder cancer from urine samples and was found to be able to do so accurately. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Their solution could be used as a non-invasive way to identify early bladder cancer and avoid complications. Its initial claim of end-to-end data encryption was somewhat misleading. There were also concerns that the company is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftechcrunch.com\u002F2025\u002F12\u002F03\u002Fend-to-end-encrypted-smart-toilet-camera-is-not-actually-end-to-end-encrypted\u002F\">using customers’ bowl pictures\u003C\u002Fa> taken by Dekoda to train AI. Kohler clarified that their “algorithms are trained on de-identified data only”, but other companies might not take a similar stance. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The adage of “there is no digital health without sacrificing some privacy” comes to mind here. The average healthy person might not necessarily need a smart toilet, but these devices can have real practical uses for specific segments of the population.
